Skills inventory tools and strengths assessments have been established to help organizations mine the wealth of resources that can be applied to special projects and strategically important initiatives - many of which lie outside of formal job descriptions.

The Wealth Capital Matrix is a framework I developed to help individuals map their intangible assets in a way that maximizes their ability to deliver greater value. When you train members of your organization with these principles, you can reap organization-wide benefits as well.

Here are the components of the Wealth Capital Matrix:

Spiritual Capital

For individuals, spiritual capital represents those particular strengths that individuals habitually draw upon to communicate, persuade, solve problems and make decisions. We place these strengths within the family of "capital" because we believe that they can be invested in, and harvested in a way that provides greater value than the investment.

A powerful example of the deployment of spiritual capital is illustrated by the rise of Oprah Winfrey. Re-assigned from her role as a reporter because of her inability to keep herself from over-empathizing with the individuals she was reporting on, she was re-assigned to a talk show format where her gift of "empathy" endeared her to a morning audience and fueled her rise.

Social Capital

When you and other members of your organization learn how to map your social networks and systematically identify the value represented by those networks,

your company will have the opportunity to grow much faster through alliances, partnerships and joint ventures.

By creating platforms that enable individuals to connect their social networks to corporate opportunities, you give them another way to be rewarded and another way to add value.

Intellectual Capital

Many business leaders pay lip service to the value of the people in their organizations. Most well-run companies today have figured out that making the investment in world class leadership development and adult learning programs yields tremendous benefits.

However, only a few companies have built strategic advantages out of helping employees mine their intellectual capital. These few companies are now some of the most profitable and consistently innovative in the world and include firms like 3M and Google.

In both companies, employees are encouraged to spend a significant percentage of paid time thinking about projects of their own interest. Profitable ideas like Post-it notes have developed from such independent projects.

One of the key components of the wealth capital matrix is the SHELL audit - a personal strengths inventory and skills audit that enables individuals unearth otherwise forgetting talents and intangible assets.

Financial Capital

Financial capital is often an expression of how well the spiritual, social and intellectual capital has been leveraged and monetized. Including financial capital in the wealth capital matrix helps individual members of your organization reduce stress by planning for the future and getting a handle on their management of their personal lives.

However, in very small companies, this financial capital assessment could become a resource for emergency funding or partnership should it become necessary.
