FEA was the Commissioning
Agent on the HHMI Headquarters LEED Gold
Certification project. FEA prepared the
Commissioning Plan and Specifications.
Assist in building a comprehensive energy management strategy Establish baseline performance Identify opportunities for improvement and set goals Direct the program development and implementation
Define the building systems performance criteria Provide a validated baseline for building performance Provide a means of tracking and evaluating building performance
over time Prepare a commissioning plan with detailed specifications FEA can develop master energy management programs for individual buildings, entire campuses, or company portfolios. These programs consider current and projected energy rates, remaining service life of equipment, comfort and indoor air quality, and building and energy codes. FEA can analyze your facility from a “big picture” standpoint while preparing a plan that considers your priorities. Utilities are the single largest expense in most facilities. Together we can take the guess work out of it so that you will know your opportunities and have the ability to monitor your success.
A typical energy audit includes:
Identifying the breakdown of electricity use by function (see Figure A)
Identifying opportunities for energy savings in operations and control of the existing heating, ventilating, and cooling systems and lighting systems
A final report that includes recommending saving opportunities that will require little to no-cost to you and capital-intensive projects which can be analyzed to determine payback

How efficient is your building? FEA can help you get started with the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Program. Our team can benchmark your building’s energy performance, generate your ENERGY STAR score, determine your baseline energy consumption, and help you develop a path for improvement. If you are seeking the ENERGY STAR label for your building, FEA’s Professional Engineers can perform the required on-site building systems review – the final step to building labeling. FEA is proud to be an ENERY STAR Partner.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®)
FEA has been a corporate member of the US Green Building Council since 2004. Our team is intimately familiar with various LEED rating systems, having worked on projects with the New Construction (NC), Commercial Interiors (CI), and Existing Buildings (EB) rating systems.
Nearly 25% of FEA employees are LEED-AP’s including New Construction (LEED-NC), Existing Building (LEED-EB), and LEED Green Associate.
Our team has seen these rating systems from all sides, working with facility managers and owners desiring certification as well as working with the contractors and engineers designing and implementing the requirements. “Our Platinum Certification is a significant achievement in sustainability, and marks a milestone in VSP’s ongoing efforts to become a model of energy and resource efficiency. FEA set the bar at the highest level and met their goal. We will benefit from this achievement for years to come.” -Steve Hibbs, Director, Corporate Services, VSP Vision Care

Education and Training
Personnel
FEA employees are highly qualified and motivated individuals with extensive experience. Our staff members speak at major industry events and conferences hosted by organizations like: International Facility Management Association (IFMA), Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). In addition to speaking at these events, members of our team currently teach courses at many universities including George Mason University (GMU) and Rice University. FEA has been actively involved in the development of training and teaching materials to support the Facility Management Professional (FMP), Certified Facility Manager (CFM) and Sustainable Facility Professional (SFP) educational programs. FEA partnered with the IFMA Foundation to write several guides in the Sustainability “How-to” Guide Series. FEA is also recognized as a Strategic Business Partner by APPA. The FEA team understands the importance of sharing knowledge. As a result, our internal task forces meet on a monthly basis to discuss the most recent trends, highlight government mandate changes, and share pertinent knowledge about recent projects or events. As a result of these task force meetings, articles and papers are written by FEA staff and often appear in publications including: Civil Engineering, American School & University, Buildings Magazine, Concrete Repair Bulletin, Building Design & Construction, Today’s Facility Manager, and The Journal of Facility Management. FEA is committed to extending the service life of your facility and to delivering the highest quality service possible to our clients. We have a detailed quality assurance program in which Principals and Associates are involved in the management and review of all projects. This translates into successful projects for our clients.

Testimonials
Our clients deserve engineers and facility management specialists which have expertise in the built environment. We must be able to recognize problems that arise as buildings age. We understand the capital and maintenance issues a facility or property manager faces. Following are a few comments from our previous clients:
“The best decision we made as we undertook the LEED certification process was to work with the FEA team. They understood our needs and developed a plan that was consistent with our goals and the resources that we were able to bring to the project.”
Richard Nuanes, Director, Conference & Facilities Management, National Education Association “Before working with FEA in 2005 the B&G Dept. scored a 45/100 on our BSC (Balanced Score Card). We recently scored an 89! I attribute this drastic improvement to FEA’s assistance and recommendations. We have continually implemented FEA’s recommendations from your report and we continue to improve our score. We want FEA to come down to review what we are currently doing and benchmark us against what you found on your first study.” Vic Reese, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
“We have had a long mutually beneficial relationship with FEA for the past 12 years. Over that time, we have found the FEA staff to be extremely professional, thorough, detail-oriented, and responsive. It has been great! They’ve done everything we needed to have done.” Paul O’Connor, Capital Project Coordinator, Prince William County Public Schools
“I wanted to commend your staff for all their hard work and patience as they submitted on our behalf for the USGBC LEED-EB Gold certification. It means so much to our facility team, and it also provides me with sense of purpose, as a representative of IFMA, saying that I have applied lessons I have learned from IFMA into my work environment, and giving me the ability to more honestly encourage others to take that critical next step. It was wonderful to have such proven and reliable resources available like FEA, and the staff who made the process seamless. Thank you for all your help, guidance, and professionalism.” Francis J. Kuhn, CFM, CFMJ, Vice President, Facilities & Administration, WesCorp, 1st Vice Chair of IFMA Board of Directors

Why Choose FEA?
Optimizing Facility Performance!
At FEA we believe in protecting buildings, infrastructure, and our natural resources for current and future generations. We are in business to ensure that the millions of facilities are operated, maintained, and repaired in a productive and sustainable manner, to optimally perform, and help our clients successfully achieve their organization’s FM objectives. This is our mission.
With our focus on existing facilities, we have experienced a full array of built environment challenges and opportunities. Working on structures ranging from historic to nearly new, we know how facilities act, age and perform.
Combining our engineering talents with facility management professionals allows us to see the total
picture from bricks to people. We understand that facilities are not simply steel and mortar but a critical part of an organization.
Each of our projects are unique. We pride ourselves in taking the additional steps up front to uncover
your desired outcomes and objectives. Until we know all of your expectations we cannot be certain that the final product delivered will meet your needs. We know that unless we deliver the data that you need, within the constraints given, you will only be left with more questions. We deliver answers.
We have real world, hands-on experience with evaluations of building conditions as well as engineering
and managing the required repairs. We know how to prioritize issues and design practical long term solutions.
We follow up with every customer to evaluate satisfaction and success. Our high percent of customer
satisfaction has resulted in the vast majority of our work being a direct result of past experience or referral. While satisfaction is a nice term, we strive to exceed client expectations on every engagement.
We would appreciate the opportunity to add you to our list of valued clients.
