Time elays 9 3pecial ffects

In order to provide room for time delays /et cetera0+ you ill need a

longer

rocket casing* 3o go out to the store again and 4uy ider 4ron

packaging tape

/: in* instead of & in*0* 1ut the thing is that this type of tape is

not sold

in most stores+ so go look in a phone 4ook for large paper suppliers

that sell

packaging supplies* To make a rocket casing ith a time delay+ you ;ust

have

to follo the instructions in -art I /2o to .ake 3ugar Rockets0 except

/there

are some changes0,

$< =se the : in* packaging tape to make a : in* casing*

&< When loading the propellant+ instead of stopping at the top of the

mandrel+

continue orking+ using the flat+ undrilled end of the tamp+ and

pack an

extra $>& inch of propellant in on top of the mandrel*

:< ?ou ill need to form a tiny hole through the epoxy glue plug+ to do

this+

/after packing the propellant0 stick a large seing needle into the

propellant right at the edge of the rocket casing+ you then press it

into

the delay poder to a depth of $>8 of an inch+ no firmly pack in

your ad

of tissue paper or paper toel and then pour in the front plug of

epoxy*

@< fter the glue dries and hardens+ use a pair of small pliers to

tist and

pull the needle out of the epoxy+ leaving a tiny pin)hole through

the plug*

7o you're all ready to go***

 

.aking a '-op' sound and smoke

To make a 'pop' and some smoke at the end of the rocket's flight is

easy*

ll you have to do is fill up the pin hole ith 4lack poder or -yrodex

poder

and add another $>$% of a gram /$>& as much as you used to prime the

rocket0*

-ress in a another ad of tissue paper /or toel0 and pour another epoxy

cap on

top of that* When the falme inside the rocket reaches the front of the

time

delay poder+ it ill flash through the pin hole and ignite the poder*

This

is ho to make a fire cracker like 'pop' and a puff of smoke at the end

of its

flight* .aking the flames a certain color is also desira4le* Well+ it

is very

simple* If you ant a green flame hen it is lauched+ this is hat you

do,

Ao out and 4uy some Copper 3ulfate /poder0* Then you glue the poder

on

to the rocket casing/s0 at the ends all the ay around* =se lmer's

glue to

do this* nd that's it! When the rocket is ignited+ it ill 4e

launched as

the Copper 3ulfate 4urns /lmer's glue melts0+ causing green flames*

use other chemicals to produce different colors* 1ut 4e sure to use the

To make your rocket/s0 fly 4etter+ you ill need to make a nose cone*

onto

the nose of each rocket* This should not reBuire any assistance /I

To pop a parachute+ fill the pin hole ith 4lack poder and add a very

amount of poder on top of this* Then cut a disk of stiff paper from a

your poder tamp+ press the paper disk into the nose of the rocket on

top of

the loose poder /4e sure that you have not made a nose cone and have

glued

 

it onto the rocket0*

3econd 3tage Rocket

If you ant to have your rocket ignite a second stage+ then use a single

edged

raEor 4lade to cut the excess length of the cassing off right at front

of the

front plug* Then fill the pin)hole ith loose poder and cap the 5RF7T

of the

rocket ith the poder ppaste ;ust as you did to the 4ack end hen

priming it

for firing* .ake sure the front of the rocket is marked+ once te ends

are

capped+ you on't 4e a4le to tell hich end is hich* When igniting a

second

stage+ place the priming cap of the second stage engine in contact ith

the

front end cap or first stage motor* When the flame in the first stage

motor

reaches the front of the time delay poder+ it ill ignite the cap at

its

front+ hich in turn ill light the priming cap of the second stage

engine*

.aking a 3econd 3tage 3tick Rocket

When you make a second stage stick rocket+ you ill need a longer stick

to

4alance the extra eight and you ill have to connect the to stages so

that

the second stage can slide easily aay from the first after the first is

spent*

Wrap a single layer of paper tape around the fron of the 4ooster engine

/first

stage motor0+ so that the tape is glued to the front of the 4ooster 4ut

sticks

$>& an inch out in from of the finished+ capped engine* fter the glue

dries+

you can slide the tail of the second stage into this paper sleeve off

the first

until the priming cap of the second stage mmotor touches the front cap

of the

first* Alue or tape the longer guide stick to the second stage engine+

leaving

the first stage engine and its paper sleeve free* /7ote, This to stage

stick

rocket is & rocket casings connected to a longer stick* This is an

?ou can mix hite 4aking flour ith epoxy glue if you cannot get the

ater

putty* Instead of getting floers of sulfur+ you can get dusting sulfur

at

a nursery or fertiliEer supplier* usting sulfur ill result in a

4etter

rocket* 7ever put the : chemicals /sulfur+ saltpetre+ and sugar0 in a

4lender+

if you do+ you'll get a real 4ig kick out of it***
