FROM THE PRES IDENT
In 1974 Carroll College’s Mark Aamot and colleague Charles Boyer resurrected the Town and Gown Chorale and re-created it as the Waukesha Choral Union. Throughout the last 40 years the WCU has fostered classical and contemporary choral performance in Waukesha County and SE Wisconsin. WCU has a rich heritage in the artistic community, and takes pride in its many collaborations with collegiate and high school music programs in the area. We are pleased you have joined us to celebrate this first concert of our 40th Anniversary Year!
We have our loyal audience, our patrons, sponsors and advertisers, and the combined brilliance of Conductors Mark Aamot, Greg Carpenter, and Ernie Brusabardis lll to thank for achieving this benchmark. Hundreds of singers have passed through the WCU rehearsal halls and are also part of our success and legacy. WCU can confidently move into the next 40 years with this framework and your ongoing support.
The dedicated singers, musicians, and volunteers of WCU commemorate this Anniversary with new women’s wardrobe, and an updated logo! More awaits throughout the Season and we want you to be a part of it. This includes becoming a singing member of WCU…. so mark your calendars for our Spring auditions on January 20, 2014 & January 21, 2014.
Thank you for attending our presentation of Rutter’s powerful Requiem this evening. We look forward to performing the magnificent Vivaldi’s Gloria in December, and singing for you throughout our Season of Light!
Mary Stephani, Waukesha Choral Union President

FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR ABOUT THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR
Welcome to the opening concert of WCU’s Season Of Light. The main work we will present this evening is a setting of the Requiem Mass by John Rutter. This setting combines the traditional Latin text of the requiem mass with English translations of psalms and text from the Book of Common Prayer. This very modern version of the funeral mass is combined with works that contemplate the suffering and pain we may experience in life, but yet there is hope. There is eternal, or perpetual light. Mozart’s Ave verum corpus depicts the sacrifice of Christ. Carissimi’s Plorate filii Israel is the lamentation of Jepthe’s daughter who must die because of an unwise vow made by her father. Handel’s Draw the Tear evokes the pain of hopeless love. Dawson’s arrangement of the spiritual Soon-Ah Will Be Done speaks of meeting those who have passed before us in the next life. May this concert give you rest from your troubles, peace of mind and keep you on that journey to the light.

Waukesha Choral Union last May presented a commissioned choral work that was two years in the making. The Choral Union held a writing contest to produce a text for the commission and received a plethora of entries.
A committee selected the charming and thoughtful poems of Abby Lewis, then a sophomore at Waukesha South High School.
“Having my poetry set to music and sharing this part of myself with so many people is both an incredible experience and an extreme honor,” Abby wrote in our program. Her efforts were appreciated by everyone and summed up by WCU Composer Ernest Brusubardis who called Abby “a really good wordsmith” who prose had a world-wide and often times sad quality.”
The Waukesha Choral Union is proud to connect with our communities in so many ways. We look forward to many more connections as we celebrate our 40th year!
When the Waukesha Choral Union formed from previous choir groups in 1974, it was amid a potpourri of cultural, social and political images and milestones that marked that year. Here is a short list:
• Kathryn Morrison was the first woman to be elected to the Wisconsin State Senate. She was from Platteville.
• Most Milwaukee area hospitals providing residency training joined to create the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals.
• “Happy Days,” a sitcom depicting a Milwaukee family, began a long run on television. TV hits that year included “The Waltons,” “Kojak,” “The Price is Right and “The Six Million Dollar Man.”
• Popular movies included “The Sting,” The Exorcist,” The Godfather Part II” and Papillon.”
• Born were Leonardo DiCaprio, Alanis Morisette, Jimmy Fallon and Victoria Bechham.
• Aviation legend Charles Lindbergh died.
• President Gerald Ford gave a full pardon to Richard Nixon.
• The World population reached four billion.
• Men wore polyester leisure suits and wide-collar print shirts.
• Women wore seersucker culottes, polyester chiffon dresses and Madras shirts.
• Both men and women loved their bell-bottoms.
• The national average cost of a new house was $34,900, the average income was $13,900 and the average monthly rent was $185,
• The cost of a gallon of gas was 55 cents while the average cost of a new car was $3,750.
Come lend your voice to a premiere choral group! This is your invitation to be part of something really special – a chorus that has given audience members wonderful experiences for the past four decades. The Waukesha Choral Union seeks new members who enjoy singing. Whether you are a soprano, tenor or any other voice type, WCU would love to have you audition.
