Nasce Confi ndustria Metalli
METRA, THE LEADING COMPANY FOR ALUMINIUM
EXTRUSION
“What is our main point of strength? The
technical support and working with customers
to develop the product.” Mr. Mario Bertoli,
Managing Director of METRA, indicates the
distinctive winning feature of the Brescia
Company, a Company that has been a major player
in the aluminium extrusion sector since 1962.
Today, Metra is one of the European leaders in the
sector, with an annual production capacity that
exceeds 90,000 tons. “We began with supplies
of aluminium profi les for the building industry,
then we also focused our attention on industrial
applications. Today, the two activities have
the same importance for us and are managed
by two specialised divisions: a strategic choice
that enables us to reduce the risks involved”,
Mr. Bertoli explains, who is also the President
of Assomet (Associazione Nazionale Industrie
Metalli non Ferrosi - National Association of
Non-ferrous Metal Industries). Today, METRA
represents a reference point in the sector: “This
is because we do not limit ourselves to selling
a product, but we make our specifi c expertise
available to the principal, not only technical
expertise but also regulatory expertise.” METRA
provides a valuable consultancy service, also
referred to the characteristics of aluminium:
“The other metals lend themselves to more
standardised machining. Whereas, a great many
shapes can be produced with aluminium, thanks
to its ductility. Hence, METRA is able to transform
the client’s ideas into reality with its know-how,
innovating capacity, and its experience.” The
numerous and prestigious supplies in the building
and industrial fi eld demonstrate these important
qualities of the Company. “In the fi rst case I can
mention the Lombardy Region building in Milan,
the two centres of the European Parliament in
Strasbourg and Brussels, the Louvre Pyramid,
Tower 7 and the Goldman Sachs building in New
York. These were supplies for which very high
quality standards were required, not achievable
by all extruders. On the other hand, METRA has
anticipated the sector’s development, also with
reference to the principles of sustainable growth
and energy-saving”, Mr. Bertoli states. METRA
has achieved signifi cant applications in the

A giugno entra in funzione, come fase
automotive industry, for which we produce very
important components for safety requirements
(for example: for Fiat), and also for the railway
sector, where we are among the fi rst three top
ranking world players. This is a very demanding
fi eld from the technical aspect, disciplined by
highly demanding regulations, in which we have
a signifi cant market share as strategic suppliers
to the four major European groups: Ansaldo Brera,
Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens. Within the end
of the year, inter alia, we will be one of the fi rst
companies in Europe to receive the certifi cate
in compliance with the new IRIS standard.”
The leadership position in the railway sector
demonstrates the excellence of METRA’s know-
how, besides having a signifi cant technical impact
on the other application sectors, and METRA
was one of the major players at the Alumotive
event: “An event that successfully represents
application of metals in the fi eld of transport. The
choice of location in Brescia is justifi ed: in fact,
approximately 50% of the Italian metallurgical
production originates from the Province”, Mr.
Bertoli says.

CONFINDUSTRIA METALLI IS FOUNDED
Confi ndustria Metalli (Federation of National
Associations of iron metallurgy industries) has
been founded, based on the partnership between
Federacciai (Italian steel industry Federation)
and Assomet (National Federation of non-
ferrous metal industries). The new Federation is
chaired by Giuseppe Pasini and will include 240
companies with more than 110.000 employees,
representing an overall turnover of approximately
70 billion Euros. Environment, Reach regulations,
honouring commitments to safeguard the climate
and the cost of electric power represent the
priorities, but also the shared themes of the
newly formed Federation. As it was emphasised
by Mario Bertoli, Chairman of Assomet “steel
and non-ferrous metals, sectors which are
complementary to each other will work together
to prepare a common industrial policy document
to be sustained in Italy and in Europe”.
THE FIRST TRAIN FOR THE BRESCIA METROBUS
WILL BE ARRIVING SOON.
The work on Brescia’s light underground railway
is proceeding briskly. The fi rst of the 18 trains
will begin operation in June as an experimental
phase. The trains have aluminium shells
manufactured entirely using profi les produced by
METRA Industria.
The construction sites for the Poliambulanza,
San Polo park, formerly bruco, San Polo Cimabue,
Sanpolino and Sant’Eufemia stations in the
south section refl ect a differentiated progress
status, in accordance with the scheduled timing.
The internal works referred to the underground
trains depot are currently being executed, while
the laying and installation operations for the
train maintenance equipment and machinery
(overhead travelling cranes, lathe, train washing
plant, etc.) are in the completion phase. Whereas,

o di Brescia some of the work on the marshalling yards and
railway construction (laying rails, producing the
pre-fabricated ducts to contain the plant cables,
laying the operating boxes in relation to the
points, laying the third rail to supply electric
power to the trains) has been completed.
The fi rst of the 18 trains of the Brescia
Metrobus will travel the 4 kilometres between
the Sant’Eufemia-Buffalora depot, up to the
Sant’Eufemia Station and then as far as the
Poliambulanza Station from June up to November.
The trains have body shells which were
produced entirely using structural aluminium
profi les supplied by METRA. This represents an
experimental phase to calibrate the automatic
guiding system. From this point the trains
will travel empty over the viaduct and inside
the cutting. A test in order to fi ne-tune the
connection between the train and remote control
that will set up the automatic, driver-less, light
underground railway along the route.
The train has the following technical features:
three bi-directional shells, four bogies and six
doors which open automatically on each side:
the carriage shell is produced using extruded
aluminium, profi les and welded panels. The train
has a total length of 30 metres, whereas the
train weighs 58 tons. The maximum speed is 80
km per hour, while the transporting capacity is
approximately 300 passengers.
METRA Industria supplied 22 EN AW 6008 T6
and EN AW 6082 T6 extruded aluminium alloy
members for the train’s construction (two drive
units at the front and rear and an intermediate
carriage), corresponding to an overall aluminium
weight of approximately 10,000 kg. The profi le
bars for the fl oors are 7,200mm long. The
longitudinal beam is 12,500 mm long. The bars
for the roof profi les (including the drive shaft
tunnel panel) are 11,750mm long.
The underground railway fl eet will consist
initially of 18 trains, 16 of which will be in
service, on a rotation system, and 2 trains will
remain available in the depot as reserves and
for maintenance purposes. The fl eet will be
able to ensure a transporting capacity of 8,500
passengers/hour in both directions with a time
interval between trains of 180 seconds. The
fl eet can subsequently be increased up to 40
trains, based on the demand for transport, of
which 34 in service on a rotation system and 6
trains remaining available. The underground
railway system will be able to achieve the
maximum transport capacity with a fl eet of this
size with fl ows of 17,000 passengers/hour in
both directions and with a time interval between
trains of 90 seconds. safeguard the climate and
the cost of electric power represent the priorities,
but also the shared themes of the newly formed
Federation. As emphasised by the Chairman of
Assomet, Mr. Mario Bertoli, “steel and non-
ferrous metals, sectors which are complementary
to each other, will work together to prepare
a common industrial policy document to be
sustained in Italy and in Europe”.

Hotel Fontainebleau a Las Vegas
News

HOTEL FONTAINEBLEAU, LAS VEGAS
The architectural lighting solution designed
for the fontainebleau hotel quickly became
one of the most challenging project for
metra aluminum in 2008-2009. Located in
the heart of las vegas, the hotel features
a highly effi cient and sustainable lighting
system installed on each and every window
of its 68 fl oors creating a multi effects light
game, typical of the highly glamourous
vegas environnement. The luxurious and
modern hotel/casino complex is currently
being built and is due to open next fall.
Featuring a 10,000 sq meter casino, a 30,000
sq meter retail space, state of the art night
clubs, performing arts theater, a chic spa, 27
restaurants and as many lounges; there is no
doubts high quality and outstanding looks are
a must for each and every components of this
building.
With this concept in mind, the high end design
team lumenpulse, metra’s customer, created
a rectangular lighting system to fi t the base
of each window. The system is meant to
create special designs or slogans on demand.
Lumenpulse, a montreal based company,
specialises in large scale lighting projects
since 2006 is recognized as one of the leaders
in the global advanced lighting market.
They primarily focus in innovating, durable
and modern designs. Although innovation
is lumenpulse core value, simplicity and
sustainability are always the main objective in
every solution they offer.
The lighting system is made of different
extrusions: 2 inside parts, 1 outside
rectangular cap and 1 outside junction to
connect two lights at the mullion level, for a
total of 4 different parts for each unit. And,
given the extravagant turn the hotel outside
walls take, the lighting system had to come
in different sizes and shapes. Hence the
complexity of the puzzle! The project totalises
7700 apparels subdivided in 34 different
models with 87 different types of various
lengths and angles. The outside surface
extrusions need to be cut to size, punched
and chamfered. Some models of the junctions
also have to be welded. Lastly, both outside
profi les require a special acid etch anodizing
fi nish.
In sum, added value, top quality requirements,
extensive fabrication as well as project
management, is a good example of complete
solution that metra can provide to the
architectural industry.
