Year 4 Buried Treasure Class trip to Butser Farm on Tuesday 6 th May to support our class topic work on the Celts and the Romans. What you could do at home to support your child: Regularly practise mental maths. Regularly hear your child read to improve their reading stamina and ask them questions about what they have read. Visit the library to research our topic. Topic Our creative theme for this term is ‘Buried Treasure’. We will be learning about Celtic and Roman settlements in Britain and looking for evidence of what life was like during these times. Lessons will be looking at how the Romans created a sustainable environment, Celtic art and community life. Through this topic we will develop the skills to be able to: understand that a time line can be divided into BC and AD use evidence to describe the houses and settlements of people in the past. locate the Roman period on a timeline. look at different versions of the same event in history and identify differences in the accounts. Numeracy During the Summer term we will be working on: using effective written methods to add, subtract, multiply and divide describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes measuring angles and recognising angles of different sizes developing our problem solving skills improving our mental maths strategies knowing how to use decimal notation to write numbers such as one and one tenth, two and three tenths, three hundredths finding fractions of numbers and amounts visualising 3D shapes and their nets Literacy Over the term we will be learning about explanation text types. This will be linked to our ‘Moving and Growing’ science topic. We will be learning about features of a recount and moving on to writing our own newspaper report. In our narrative work we will be looking at stories that raise issues or dilemmas. There will be continued focus on developing: writing stamina through Big Writing the use of cursive script the accurate use of a range of punctuation the accurate use of a range of sentence structures Reading Comprehension will be completed weekly, and the children will participate in regular guided reading sessions to develop pupils’ reading stamina. Art & Design Our Art work will be linked to our topic and will develop pupils’ drawing and printing skills. We will use hatching and cross hatching to illustrate tone and texture and will use a variety of brush techniques. In D.T we will spend time designing and making a shield focused on Roman and Celtic designs. R.E We are going to be learning about various Jewish festivals and recognise the links with Christianity. In Summer 2, we are going to be learning about The Christian Community, both locally and globally, and how this has altered over time.

Literacy

Over the term, we will be learning about

be learning about the features of a recount and

moving on to writing our own newspaper reports.

learning how we can increase our speed and accuracy

when bowling and throwing

In athletics we are working towards: sprinting over a short distance

using a range of throwing techniques

learning to choose the best pace for running

ICT

In this unit we will be using powerpoint to

create a tree diagram using algorithms to

sort and identify a group of skeletons and

bones based on similarities and

differences.

This unit will enable the children to:

develop their research skills to

locate and save images

draw and construct tree diagrams

to sort and classify objects

use hyperlinks to create a non-

linear powerpoint presentation

Music Year 4 will continue to have SoundStart on Monday

mornings to help them develop their guitar skills.

We are working towards:

learning to play chords and using our

knowledge to compose short pieces of music

using a range of technical musical words to

help us describe music

Science In the first term we will be finding out about Moving and Growing. Children will learn how

the skeleton is related to movement and what happens to the skeleton and muscles as they

move.

In the second half term we will be investigating Solids and Liquids. Children will learn

about the differences between solids and liquids and their different properties.

In our Science investigations we are working towards:

making predictions and planning fair tests

using scientific vocabulary to describe our observations

making and recording careful measurements and presenting them in a bar chart
