Birmingham Public Schools

A strong start for a great year!

There is nothing quite like the start of a new school year. When I retired in July of 2015, I anticipated that it would be odd to have the day after Labor Day come and go without being part of a school district. As it stands today, over three years later, I still don’t know the answer, having served in an interim role in a public school district each fall since. I do know that the energy and excitement that a first day of school brings is like no other, and I feel

fortunate to have spent this past Sept. 4 in the company of students and staff members of the Birmingham Public Schools.

This is not my first experience with BPS, having served in 2015 as Interim Superintendent for Human Resources and 2016-17 as Interim Deputy Superintendent. I cannot be more sincere when I share that it is an honor and privilege to be back once more and to be working together with the dedicated members of the Board of Education and such an outstanding staff to serve this special community.

I take my role as a bridge between your former superintendent and your next superintendent to heart. Having witnessed incredible work already being accomplished in this district, I am honored to help transition BPS from one leader to the next. My previous experiences and my current role have provided me with enough understanding to know with certainty this is a district filled with inspiring leaders, exemplary teachers and committed staff members in every employee group, all focused on doing what is in the best interests of our students.

Having spent time in all of our schools within these first few weeks, it’s been remarkable to see the many extraordinary examples of teaching and learning taking place on so many levels. I’ve walked into numerous classrooms to see deeply engaged students experiencing the joy of learning, from preschool through high school. It is no wonder that Birmingham Public Schools boast some of the highest achievement results in the State of Michigan and sees so many of our students go on to experience great success and accomplishment at the post-secondary level and beyond. Even so, we will continue to march forward in the spirit of continuous growth and improvement, as no matter how successful we are, we will not rest on our laurels as we learn from our failures and strive to be better each and every day.

We appreciate the contributions of all of our stakeholders, including students, staff members, parents and community members, which have resulted in our school year getting off and running so smoothly and on such an upbeat note. It bodes well as we look ahead to what we fully expect will be a positive, productive and fulfilling year for everyone involved. Welcome to the 2018-19 school year!

Sincerely,

John Silveri, Interim Superintendent

Board seeks to fill Superintendent seat

The BPS Board of Education has selected a search firm to support their work of hiring a new Superintendent for the district. Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) was selected over the summer and has held forums in the community to aid in the creation of a candidate profile to guide their search.

Superintendent Search forums were open to the community and were held on the evenings of Sept. 12 and Sept. 17. Small group sessions were held throughout the day and a survey was available Sept. 7-Oct. 5. HYA is expected to have a candidate profile to the Board by mid-October.

Former BPS Superintendent Dr. Daniel Nerad retired from the district on June 30 and Interim Superintendent John Silveri now serves until a permanent replacement can be found. The Board anticipates selecting a candidate following interviews in late November and early December. The posting for the Superintendent position can be found at https://hyasearch.com/job/superintendent-beverly-hills-mi/ and will close on Nov. 16.

“We are very grateful for the engagement we’ve received from the community throughout this process thus far,” said Kim Whitman, BPS Board President. “Selecting a superintendent is a responsibility that we as a Board do not take lightly. The input we’ve gathered from the community will help us select candidates that represent the specific needs of the Birmingham Public Schools. We expect to find a dynamic leader that will help us move the district forward.”

Groves graduate extends support

Victoria Lucas, 2015 Groves High School graduate, hasn’t forgotten about her alma mater and is working diligently to support under-served students in her former district through a program she created called the

Extended Mile Program (EMP). Currently enrolled in the College of LSA at U-M Ann Arbor, she’s studying to earn her BS with double majors in

Biology, Health & Society and International Studies. Her experiences led her to create the Extended Mile program to help

students from BPS improve their writing skills on the ACT and SAT. The program offered Lucas the chance to encourage BPS students to believe that the ACT/SAT is an obstacle that can be overcome with preparation. Activities highlighted the importance of cultural diversity and self-development while pursuing a higher education, collaboration for ACT/SAT writing simulations and gaining insight about the college admissions process and lifestyle from current students.

“Since graduating from Wylie E. Groves in 2015, many people from the BPS community have helped me get to the point that I’m at now,” she said. “It’s only right that I do what I can to help the next class of scholars. Representation matters!”

Duke TIP recognition

Lochlan Patterson, an eighth grade student at Berkshire Middle School, has been honored by Duke University Talent Identification Program for his exceptional scores on the SAT. The talent program recognizes students across the United States who’ve scored at or above the 95th percentile on grade-level standardized test. Duke TIP hosts an annual recognition ceremony to honor the remarkable ACT or SAT scores.

Bond update

Over the summer, work was carried out on the Seaholm High School auditorium and additional projects throughout the district were finalized. At Seaholm, a scene shop was added and auditorium renovations were completed, including a new sound system and new flooring and lighting. Seaholm STEM labs and the media center were also updated to create a more collaborative learning environment. Work on these areas at Groves High School were completed last summer.

Among projects across the district, epoxy flooring was installed in the restrooms at Beverly Elementary School and replacement rooftop units were installed at West Maple Elementary. Summer 2018 work wrapped up Phase 3 of the BPS Bond projects, with two smaller phases remaining.

This year’s 2018 Courageous Kid Award was received by 14-year-old Kathleen Sovran of Southfield and student at Groves High School. At Seaholm, Bergstrom established the Young American’s for Freedom, which hosted School Safety Student Roundtables Civil Discourse

assemblies with a state representative, U.S. congressman and students to have an open dialogue around important issues. He spent time over the summer planning additional opportunities. Additionally, Bergstrom spent the summer serving as a law clerk for a local judge and traveled to Greece, Gettysburg, Williamsburg and DC where he attended several political leadership meetings.

Thanks to the Pierce Community Education Council and the teachers and students in third grade ESL, Pierce has a new Free Little Library. Located on the playground, near the new Buddy Bench, the idea came from Amanda Papaghanian’s third grade ESL reading group. The group

read a non-fiction piece about Free Little Libraries around the world and how they are helping communities grow together and gain literacy skills. Papaghanian, Jennifer Hilzinger and students created a plan to design and advertise this new resource for the Pierce community.

Simona Lucutz volunteered to help the kids organize their design ideas and paint the library.

Connecting community and supporting innovation

The Birmingham Education Foundation is here to help community members connect with and support the innovative teachers educating children attending Birmingham Public Schools. The Foundation, known as the BEF, knows that BPS does a wonderful job of educating students. The BEF also knows that funding levels have not kept pace with the demands placed on the school system and aims to offer valuable support that directly impacts students.

“We aim to fill this gap by granting funds to teachers, supporting innovative, enriching and exciting lessons and experiences in classrooms around the district,” said BEF Executive Director, Alison Hendry. “Last year, donors helped to fund projects big and small across BPS. From headsets allowing classes to go on virtual reality field trips, to raising salmon in classrooms and bringing award-winning authors and illustrators into our schools, donations to the BEF impacted every school in our district.”

$113,528 Granted Last YearThe Birmingham Education Foundation would like to thank everyone

who came to an event or made a donation last year. This community support meant that that the BEF was able to give 85 grants last year, impacting every school in the district. To see a full list of what was funded, visit www.SupportBEF.org.
