Measuring unit and Matariki/ Maori New Year.
Matariki, the Maori New Year, is an important festival that reflects our bi-cultural heritage. It provides an ideal opportunity to explore the ways that people pass on and sustain aspects of their culture and heritage in New Zealand. How do the customs and practices of tangata whenua compare with the experiences of other people who have settled in New Zealand? Matariki is a good time to consider how different cultures measure time. How and why we mark days, months and years is something we often take for granted. But they are all important aspects of cultural identity and history. We are learning more about the Māori New Year. This year we decided to make mixed media stars (whetū) and kite’s as part of our learning. Before beginning this part of the process, we looked at different Maori art forms, such as carving and weaving. We found out about the symbolism in different shapes and designs, and practised drawing them in our books.
Our Waka – Kia Kaha
Everyone in the class has strengths and qualities, we pull together to make room 5 strong and happy. In room 5 we encourage each other to learn about working together and cooperating to achieve a common goal. We know that ‘to achieve in our life’s goal we need everyone to be on the same waka, going in the same direction, and valuing the contribution that everyone brings.
8
We all stand strong for what we believe in and respect others and their views, our mana will increase. Our classroom will also be a nicer, more pleasant place.

Students had the chance to use a range of materials like gelatin
for burns, liquid latex for wounds and wax for scars and cut off
fingers!
Students were learning to use the makeup and blood in a way to
enhance their wounds without going overboard, as well as to
create realistic bruising!
14
15
Students design and create a project in
design technology. They have the
opportunity to use a variety of tools
and materials and are encouraged to
be creative!

MONEY Please DO NOT send your child to school with $50 or $100 notes. This is too much money for them to have for the tuck-shop and/or school activities payment. The tuck-shop will no longer accept these large notes. Thank you for support with this.
Bring Your Own Device – 2018
We are now a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school. The next few pages are designed to give you some helpful information on BYOD and how you at home can help and support this. Also, a reminder on security for these devices: All devices will be locked and secured whilst here at school. The device required still features on our 2018 stationary list (so can be taken to WINZ for quotes etc) including the specs for this. The requirements are as follows:
• A physical keyboard • A screen size of 11” or larger • Minimum battery life of 5 hours
A Chrome Book is a good suggestion for Royal Oak Intermediate’s BYOD programme
…a balancing act with neither more important than the other.
