2016 A WEEK

What’s Your Personal Best for 2016? What do you think of this week’s front cover? Do you recognise it? Our tie value quote boards started appearing around school just before Christmas and we think they are a terrific way to show everyone what we stand for at IGS.

Your tie values are a great basis to form your new year’s resolution for school this year. Do you want to be more confident...putting your hand up in class and contributing more? Can your resilience be improved...next time a problem comes your way trying alternative solutions and not giving up so easily? Could you be more motivated...particularly in terms of revision for the mock exams that are due to start? Do you want to be more involved with school life...joining that club you have been putting off for so long?

Our values are important to us at IGS and will equip you with the confidence and skills to make a positive difference to your own lives and the lives of others - make 2016 your

Personal Best!

Community Counts

Congratulations to all students who competed in community events last term, your efforts have really made a difference with all bands getting off to a flying start and points totals shooting up on the thermometers which you can see around school on the community notice boards.

We've seen students and staff pit their wits against each other in the community quiz, KS3 year groups ducking and diving in the dodgeball tournament and many of you strutted your stuff on our community catwalk on Christmas Jumper Day.

You are doing your Personal Best in lessons as well, achieving certificates. Remember, each of these certificates contributes 5 points to your community so get collecting and counting those stamps if you haven't done so already!

It is also great to see so many of you contributing to year group events, such as the Year 10 football tournament and the Year 7 Pudsey coin collection.

Community Counts

Hopefully we will see many of you getting involved again this term. For those who would like a sneaky peek of what's to come we can reveal that the 27th January will be Community Charity Day. We hope you will all get involved by bringing in some spare change to donate to your community buckets which will be brought round by sixth form students during registration, break-time and lunchtime. The staff will be contributing to your community points by competing in an indoor hockey tournament which you can watch in B Hall for a charitable donation. So if your think your tutor has some silky skills, recommend them to Miss Mitchell, Mr Cunningham or Mrs Knowles We also look forward to many more certificates flooding in, more year group events you can get involved with, the annual dash down the Grove with a pancake and the top secret Learning Community afternoon which you will find out about towards the end of this half term. See you all at an event soon!

Miss Mitchell, Mr Cunningham and Mrs Knowles.

The points currently stand as follows :

It's looking close for 1st place with G Band only 201 points behind S Band. Looks like last year's winners I Band have some catching up to do though!

Christmas Constructions A group of Year 7 students joined the maths team after school in December to create some Christmas decorations. Applying their shape and space knowledge and compass skills they accurately constructed a net that folded up to create a Christmas star design which they could then decorate to produce a reversible Christmas decoration. They produced some fantastic designs that they took away with them to add a bit of a mathematical twist to the decorations in their homes.

Student Notice Boards Do you want an event publicised? Are you trying to encourage new members to your club? Are you involved in a production, activity or fundraiser that you want to tell people about? We have 2 new student notice boards that have been established in the following areas: D Floor social area N Floor, middle stairway (just by the toilets)

If you have an event, club, production, activity, fundraiser…or anything else you want to shout about please let either Mrs Hey (Key Stage 3 Hub) or Miss Southworth (Reception) have the poster or email it to [email protected] and it can be included in both of these boards, as well as ‘in-form’ and ‘Headline’.

Theatre Trips The English department are running two trips to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford for Year 10 students. All students will get a letter from their English teachers this week. Both trips aim to enrich the study of ‘An Inspector Calls’ and ‘Lord of the Flies’ (GCSE English set text studied by Year 10).

An Inspector Calls, Tuesday 3rd May, 2016: From Stephen Daldry, the

Oscar nominated Director of The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, comes the multi award-winning West End production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, ‘An Inspector Calls’. The total cost of the trip is £25 (£19 per ticket and £6 per student for the coach). Students receiving Pupil Premium are entitled to a 50% reduction (£12.50).

Lord of the Flies, Tuesday 1st March, 2016: William Golding’s 20th

century classic ‘Lord of the Flies’ explodes onto the stage in a remarkable production direct from London’s award-winning Regent’s Park Theatre. The total cost of the trip is £18 (£12 per ticket and £6 per student for the coach). Students receiving Pupil Premium are entitled to a 50% reduction (£9).

If you would like to participate in either of these trips please complete the form and hand it to your English teacher. Payment is required via Parentpay before Friday 15th January, 2016.

Who spotted Miss Davies on ITVs Ninja Warrior UK last Saturday night?

Yes our weightlifting champion tried her hand at the show’s devilishly tricky assault course...awesome attempt Miss Davies...definitely not for the faint hearted!

Miss Davies!

2016 is a big year for Miss Davies, it signifies the final leg of her journey on the road to Rio. Yes 2016 is Olympic year, and for Miss Davies that could mean a trip to South America. The first big competition of the year is the European Championships in April where Miss Davies and her team will need to qualify for a team place. As the team didn’t qualify for any places at the World Championships in November, they can only secure a maximum of one female and one male place. The final push will take place at the British Championships at the end of June and it will be a real nail biter...down to who lifts the most weight to decide which female takes the top spot and that all important ticket to Rio! Good luck Miss Davies!

Congratulations to Jemima Elgood (12RN) who recently competed in the Sunday Stoop Fell Race at Haworth. Jemima knocked 2 mins 32 secs off the record setting a staggering new race record of 39 mins and 42 secs!

It was great to see IGS students making headlines during the Christmas holidays. Fantastic coverage of our Countdown to Christmas event at All Saints’ Church.

Honoured to be ex IGS!

We were delighted to hear that ex IGS student and founding member (CEO) of Code Club, Clare Sutcliffe, has been awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List for services to technology education. Code Club is a nationwide network of free volunteer-led after school coding clubs for children aged 9-11. They create projects for their volunteers to teach at after school coding clubs or at non-school venues such as libraries. Their projects teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites. Their aim is to put a Code Club in every single primary school in the country. There are over 21,000 primary schools in the UK, it’s a big task but they think they can do it! In November 2015 Code Club became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the combined aim of creating a Code Club in every community in the world. After leaving Ilkley Grammar School, Clare studied Graphic design at Bath Spa University, graduating in 2004. Clare has enjoyed enormous success in the world of IT and was recently named as one of the 50 most influential women in IT in the UK.

Team IGS We are thrilled at Ilkley Grammar School to have a strong tradition of enthusiastic and successful sports teams covering a wide range of sporting activities. You represent the school in many competitions, sometimes nationwide, and as regular readers of ‘in-form’ will know, we love to celebrate your success. We have recently taken photos of all our Key Stage 3 sports’ teams and aim to decorate our corridors around our sporting facilities with these photos – celebrating our teams’ achievements. We would like to offer you and your parents the opportunity to purchase a team photo for £5 (2 for £8 or 3 for £10). The image will be printed on photographic paper and mounted in an A4 black mount. All Key Stage 3 team photos are available to view on our website here. If you are interested in buying a photo please follow these steps: 1. View the image on the website 2. Make a note of the Year and

team name e.g. Year 7 Football A Team

3. Using ParentPay choose the option Sports’ Photo enter the photo name(s) you would like to purchase and pay accordingly online.

The photos will then be forwarded to you via your tutor pigeon holes. We hope many of you take this opportunity to have a memento of your success and enjoy viewing our Sports Hall of Fame over the next few weeks.
