Presidents Report
I am constantly grateful for the professionalism andinterest of our Programme and Fellowship this year.Last Thursday Wally Smiley was an engaging andinteresting speaker,I felt that I couldhave spent hourslistening to his sto-ries whilst he deliv-ered a serious mes-sage. I have yet toredo the Ambulancesubscription but willdo so. Richard’skind remindersabout the Bowlinghave been much ap-preciated and I am looking forward to watching oth-
ers bowl next Thursday.During the week I attended Hampton Rotary’smeeting after discussing the Cluster publicity effortat Southland on 4th October. We intend that thisevent will include past recipients of Youth pro-grammes and also various local causes which wesupport. I am looking for about 3 to 4 volunteers tohelp staff the information booths etc.Hampton’s meeting was good, the food not as goodas ours, and they reminded me about their Trivianight on the 9th of October. Another opportunity for
us to get together with another Club, and ourfriends, to have fun.The Cheltenham Rotary High Tea was certainlygreat fun, and our table set a record for the mostRaffle prizes. We won three, but Lynda’s generositysaw one go back in the pool after she won two. Itwas a most enjoyable time.Last weekend of course it was the Cancer Councilwe were supporting, and this weekend it was goingup with Ken and Shirley to Shepparton to check outthe venues for the Club Dinners and the accommo-
dation for Conference next March. The accommo-dation is really good, central and there is a smallkitchenette in each studio or 1 Bedroom accommo-

Planning Ahead
Three meetings ago I distributed an “InterestSurvey” sheet on which I requested membersto indicate their areas of interest for 2016/17 –my year as president.
The reason was twofold:
To ensure all members, old and new alike, hadthe opportunity to indicate their areas of spe-cific interest in terms of board and club posi-tions and committee work.
To allow time for mentoring this year of mem-bers who have had no previous experience inthe role they may be interested in taking up in2016/17.
I don’t mind whether you fill in one of the sur-vey sheets (I will have more at the next twomeetings), email me your preferences, or ad-vise me personally at a meeting, but I wouldappreciate your input, preferably no later than15 September.

Wally joined Rural Ambulance Victoria in 2002as a First Aid Instructor, becoming a SeniorFirst Aid Instructor, before joining Community
Education and Engagement in 2009. Awardedthe Ambulance Medal for 10 years’ service
Prior Roles:1979 to 1985 Casual Ambulance OfficerWoodend Branch1977 to 1985 Rescue Officer, Training Officerand Deputy Controller Woodend SES Unit.
Wally is a qualified Rescue Instructor, RoadRescue Assessor and Flood
Boat Forward Hand.
Wally is a recipient of the National Medalawarded for 17years service with Woodend andMarong SES units.
Wally served 9 years as a St Johns AmbulanceFirst Aid Instructor prior to joining Rural Ambu-lance Victoria.

Radio KLF M Bendigo:Wally has been a presenter on this communityradio station for 16 years. Wally currently pre-sents: “Sunday Country” Noon to 3pm and“Music for Wally’s Mob” (an easy listening re-quest program) 3pm to 8pm each Sunday.Wally also fills in on other KLF M shows asneeded (when time permits).
Wally proved an excellent communicator andexplained in detail a number of key backgrounddetails about how Ambulance Victoria (AV) op-erated, covering;1. Circumstances when you might be
charged2. even if you have a Concession card
3. What happens when you ring 0004. Some key need to know
All of this was presented with a range of anec-dotes from his time in the serviceThe key take away messages were;1. Even if you have a Concession card you are
not necessarily covered for all AV trips. Forexample, inter hospital transfers will bebilled and could cost $1200 to $1600 a time.
2. Even if you have Private Health cover checkthe fine print.3. Emergency 000 calls will connect through
all providers regardless of which one youhave contracted with so ignore the signalstrength bars on your phone, just dial.
4. In an emergency you will be asked tochoose between Police/Fire/Ambulancechoose one. The emergency responderswill determine if you need additional ser-vices and dispatch them as required.
5. Just answer the questions asked by the per-son on the line. They are following a spe-cific screen based script designed to helpyou in the best way possible. They will al-ready have triggered the ambulance dis-patch priority process.
6. If you think you need it just do it, ring 000.DO NOT DELAY. Paramedics much preferto get to someone early when treatment iseasy than later when it is difficult or impossi-ble!!!
7. The telephone operators generally only stayon the phone when the person is;Beinggiven guided CPR, or A child

Stronger Communities ProgrammeThe Stronger Communities Programme (SCP)is a Federal Government initiative to providefunds to community groups to undertake capitalprojects that foster stronger communities. It
consists of offering to community groups, on adollar for dollar basis, $150k per electorate peryear for years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. Theproportion of this money available to the Bay-side zone of local member Andrew Robb’selectorate is approximately $80k per year.
The Mayor of Bayside, Cr Felicity Frederico,recently called an initial meeting of all the Ro-tary clubs and Community Banks (BendigoBank) in Bayside to outline the programme and
to decide if, collectively, there was a project(s)that would qualify for a grant.
Though several projects were proposed, at afollow-up meeting last week, and following dis-cussion amongst participants, it was agreedthat only one project would meet the require-ments as a collective project at this time, seedetails below.
Notwithstanding the selection of a single collec-
tive project, individual community groups (e.g.Beaumaris Rotary) can still submit a project fora grant. Beaumaris members are encouragedto look up the details of the programme at(http://investment.infrastructure.gov.au/publications/
scp SCP_Guidelines_FINAL_June_2015b.pdf )and consider if there are projects that the Clubcould undertake that would qualify for a grant.Minimum grant is $5,000 and maximum$20,000.The Collective Project:
Six bike repair kiosks along Beach Roadfrom Ricketts Point to Elwood;
Cost per kiosk approximately $5,000;Total project cost $30,000;Funding:
$5,000 (total) from 6 Rotary clubs;$5,000 (total) from 4 Community Banks;$5,000 from Bayside City Council;$15,000 from Stronger Communities
Programme.
Bayside City Council is to take the lead in mov-ing forward with this project.

Membership Report; August 2015
Currently our membership stands at 45 mem-bers, 37 Male 8 Female. With the recent addi-tion of three more new members, we now allhave the responsibility of ensuring that they aremade to feel part of our Rotary family. Pleasetake the time to talk to them and introduceyourself, and them to other members to makethem feel part of the team.
It takes time to remember names and who youhave met. We all started out as new membersand it is a challenging experience attimes. New membership is everyone’s respon-sibility so let us make it a positive one forthem.
We have recently reintroduced mentors foreach new member. Their responsibility is toensure that when they arrive each week, theyare welcomed and brought into a group to chat,answer any questions they may have aboutRotary and suggest a team area they may liketo belong to initially. This mentorship may lastsix months or less but is available to the newmember until he or she feels secure in the Ro-tary environment.
We are very fortunate in having such a fabu-lous Rotary Club, so spread the joy and makeyourself known to them and their family mem-bers.

Armchair Travel – Presenters Needed • Do you have a travel experience to share?• Would you like to contribute to a community-based program? Armchair Travel is offered as part of Sandy-
beach Centre’s REACH program – interestbased programs for people over 65 living inBayside, Kingston and Glen Eira. Each Fridaya volunteer presenter shares their travel experi-ences with the group.
On average 20 participants attend the sessionstaking the opportunity to learn about foreignlands or to explore different regions in Austra-lia. For some it is a time to reflect on past trav-els or periods of having worked and lived over-
seas.
Whilst there are some regular presenters whogenerously volunteer their time to the programthere is a pressing need for new presenters.To be a presenter you simply need photo-graphs depicting highlights of your travels anda willingness to share your experiences andacquired knowledge. The forum is relativelyinformal and a team is available to assist withboth the preparation and delivery of your pres-
entation. You do not need to be a seasonedpresenter.
Presenters speak of finding the opportunity toshare the highlights and challenges of theirtravels as most rewarding. They also enjoychatting informally with participants and feelingthe satisfaction that comes with contributing tothe community. As a not-for-profit community based organisa-tion, Sandybeach would greatly value your con-tribution to this much valued program.
