Living their “Promise!”I Promise Fourth quarter winners named

HSHS St. Anthony’s Reward and Recognition Team “I Promise” Award program recognizes those colleagues, physicians, volunteers and others who go above and beyond the everyday expected performance of exceptional care. The Reward and Recognition Team name four “I Promise” Award winners each quarter, to those who demonstrate living out the “Promise”, based on the nominations received for that quarter (April-June, July-September, October-December, and January-March).

The Reward and Recognition Team recently announced and presented the following colleagues with their “I Promise” Award for the fourth quarter of the program (January-March 2016):

Kathy Anders, Surgical Care – Orthopedics

Kathy’s nomination read, “I started orientation with Kathy. I was absolutely wowed by her the first day. I learned more from her my first week of orientation than I did in nursing school. Kathy is a wonderful asset to not only 6th floor but to our wole hospital. She inspires me to be a wonderful nurse. I hope to be just half the nurse she is! She is a perfect example of all four Core Values.”

Brenda Fuesting, Emergency Department

Brenda’s nomination read, “I would like to nominate Brenda Fuesting, ED Registrar for the ‘I Promise’ award for her caring and compassion. A family brought their infant to the emergency room with a fever. During their time in ER, the infant became critical and had to be immediately flown out. She witnessed the family struggling to figure out how they were going to get to the facility where the infant was transferred to. Brenda followed her heart and provided the family with her own money. As she provided the family with this generous gift, a couple of other staff members helped as well. I am proud to say that I work with such loving and caring people here at St. Anthony's. She is living out the ‘I Promise’ mission!”

Patsy Lilly, Wound Healing Center

Patsy was nominated for the ways she goes above and beyond her expected duties to demonstrate teamwork, exceed her customers’ expectations, and exhibit integrity and commitment while continually elevating her care. Some examples shared in the nomination included:

• Patsy has created a team atmosphere with the nurses and staff at her center. She encourages her team to strive for the best possible outcomes not only with patients but also with the company. She leads by example and it shows with her staff. She makes it a point to recognize the people she works with on special occasions and makes them feel valued…She even includes other departments by recognizing them for their hard work, giving them small items of recognition out of her own pocket: i.e. cookies, chocolates, etc.

• The patients at Patsy's center are always her priority, regardless of what their need is. In just one example, the first patient that was seen in the center was a homeless man who had no winter clothing. Patsy took clothes from her husband’s closet and gave them to the patient. She asked for nothing in return. She is kind and compassionate and is able to get patients to open up about personal things that the doctors cannot identify.

• Hospital Directors and Managers lean on Patsy for direction on inpatient wound care, regardless of whether the patient is currently established in the wound center or just on the floor at the moment. She takes time out of her numerous responsibilities and stops what she is doing to give guidance… She is constantly giving educational direction to nurses and guiding them in the direction of proper wound care.

Recognition Team.

Our Core Values in ActionHere is an example of our Core Values being lived out at St. Anthony’s, where we are creating “moments that make lasting memories!” This was shared in a thank you note by a mom who wanted to share her gratitude for how we helped her baby boy over a year ago. Thank you all for living out your “Promise!”

Dear ED Staff,It’s been a year this weekend that I brought my son in to see you when he had RSV at 3 months old. As I was remembering that time this past week I wanted to make sure you all knew just how thankful we are to have received great care for our baby boy. It’s such a scary time when a little one is sick and especially when they have trouble breathing. I couldn’t be more thankful for St. Anthony’s and the way we were treated. Thank you for the long hours, odd shifts and challenging days you put in. My family is beyond grateful for your help and care. Effingham is blessed to have such a hospital. Sincerely,Kelly A. and son (shared with permission by the family)

We are St. Anthony’s and each of us makes a difference!

Rick Schumacher, Accounting

Rick was nominated for making the difference in a life of a person he didn’t know and may never meet again, when he recently saved her life when she was choking in a restaurant. When eating at Applebee’s in Mt. Vernon with his wife one Friday evening, Rick noticed a woman in distress sitting in the table next to them, making the signs and indicating she was choking. Rick performed the Heimlich maneuver on her and saved her life, demonstrating you never know when you might make the difference in someone’s life.

Each of these colleagues received a pin in recognition of their achievement, and is given the choice between a VISA gift card and a gift certificate to the online store. They will also be in the running for the annual Values Award to be named in May 2016.
