Joseph D. Greene1940-2007

Joseph David Greene grew up in rural Emanuel County, Georgia, at a time when segregation©s grip was still strong on the South. But he believed there was no such word as "can©t." He proved that belief as a pioneer in many fields by shattering the color barrier in business, politics, and education and by working through every facet imaginable to better his community, state, and country.

Professor Greene entered the insurance business in 1960 and quickly rose through the ranks at Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company, becoming its executive vice president and chief marketing officer in 1979. He also served as a medical specialist and company clerk in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He attended Augusta College, graduating in 1972 with a degree in business, and he went on to earn his master©s degree from the University of Georgia the following year, becoming the only African American in its risk management program.

And he wasn©t done opening doors. He became the first African American elected to public office in McDuffie County, serving on the Board of Education in 1970 and later becoming its vice chairman. He was the first African American to serve on the McDuffie County Selective Service Board and as president of the United Way of McDuffie County. Professor Greene was the first African American to serve on the Georgia Constitution Revision Commission in 1978 and on Georgia©s Post Secondary Board of Directors. He was appointed by Governor Joe Frank Harris to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, serving on the board from 1984 to 1991 and serving as chairman from 1988 to 1989.

Upon his retirement from Pilgrim in 1991, Professor Greene returned to his alma mater to pursue another of his passions, teaching. He served as ASU©s Cree-Walker Professor of Business Administration until his second retire ment in 2006. During that time, he was an expert in business, finance, and economics for the Augusta community. He served as a regular panelist on WJBF©s The Augusta Report and was selected to The Augusta Chronicle©s first Business Advisory Council. Then in 2006, because of Professor Greene©s extensive knowledge in the business field, Augusta State President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., appointed him to the post of Customer Service Champion.

In addition to his work at Augusta State University, Professor Greene conducted financial planning workshops, published articles on finance and economics, and presented motivational seminars. He served as president of the Greene Financial Group and was the author of two books, Money Matters (1993) and From Cotton Fields to Board Rooms (2005). He served on numerous boards and councils, including the ASU Foundation, First Bank of Georgia, Healthcare Georgia Foundation, St. Joseph Hospital, the CSRA Community Foundation, and the Georgia Council on Economic Education.

Professor Greene©s civic-mindedness spanned well beyond the boardroom and the classroom, though. He was active in Alpha Mu Boule, Sigma Pi Phi fraternity, and was a member of the university©s chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Augusta, where he served as its first African American president. And on a daily basis he demonstrated the wisdom and humility that earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He mentored young people from elementary age to students in his college classes. He also worked to better his community through service as deacon and Sunday School teacher at Springfield Baptist Church in Thomson. As Robert Knox, mayor of Thomson, has noted, Joseph Greene was a part of everything good that happened in McDuffie County for forty years. His tireless work for the American Cancer Society helped raise funds in search of a cure for the disease that claimed so many of his family members.

Professor Greene earned many accolades throughout his life, including being named a Distinguished Alumnus of both Augusta State and the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, Outstanding Faculty Member at ASU, Business Person of the Year, Man of the Year, Outstanding Black Leaders in America, Outstanding Young Men of America, and countless others.

Professor Greene is survived by his wife, Barney Greene; his daughter, Dr. Cathy J. (Tyrone) Hatcher of Elmsford, New York; his son, Joseph David (Mistey) Greene, Jr., of Thomson; and three grandchildren, Colin C. Hatcher, Joseph D. Greene II, and Haley N. Greene.

Ushers - Student Ambassador Board

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Refrain

Great is Thy faithfulness!Great is Thy faithfulness!Morning by morning new mercies I see.All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace thai endureth Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorr©" w, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

-William M. Runyan

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain

It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,Let this blessed assurance control,That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Refrain

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain
