What does it mean to LISTEN? A quick google search tells us this:
To listen is a verb. It’s an action. It is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in the following way:
1: to pay attention to someone or something 2: to hear something with thoughtful attention : give consideration 3: to be alert to catch an expected sound
Today we invite you to take action, to listen. Something we are learning to do in new ways.
Starting around October 2020 we started building relationships with local Indigenous artists and community members. The process took time (and will continue to require care) but a vital first step in hearing a group that has been silenced and forgotten. Aspects of the process were non-traditional for us, requiring us to listen first and not let old systems block us from creating a new kind of theatre that is more inclusive and not transactional. It’s a big experiment and we hope it will yield fruitful partnerships and make us all more thoughtful in how we work.
We have also found terrific partners in organizations like the Pigsgusset Initiative; who know this work well. The Pigsgusset Initiative is a working group of the Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment. They are dedicated to healing, justice and transformation through the un-erasure of Indigenous peoples from the place now called Watertown. Some of their goals include working to educate themselves and their neighbors, challenging and changing false narratives, and thoughtfully engaging settlers who want to begin their process of transformation from being occupiers to being neighbors with legitimacy. We encourage you to sign up for their mailing list, or better yet, join their monthly meetings! If you haven’t already, check out the MA Legislative agenda and get familiar with the issues we are pushing. We invite you to utilize our engagement initiatives by visiting our website, sharing your thoughts on our Reflection Board and attending our online Community Conversations. We also want to call your attention to the fact that Listen To the Sipu is staged at the Commander’s Mansion. Captain Thomas J. Rodman commissioned the Commander’s Mansion during the American Civil War and is a part of the Watertown Arsenal, which served as the largest commander quarter in the United States. Today, the Commander’s Mansion is a historic home and venue site. All U.S land is Indigenous land, and today, Indigenous land is being occupied by modern-day settlers with the help of former day colonizers. With this being said, we ask that you think critically about the piece of work that you are about to experience, and think critically about what you, an audience member and neighbor , can do to authentically uplift native people and culture.
Now, it’s time to Listen. We hope to give you new things to hear and consider.
Thank you.

We recognize that the Indigenous affiliation listed for creative team members is one piece of their complex identities. For some members, the tribe or band they affiliate with is not necessarily tied to their birth place, but to life-long growth, community and family ties, and experiences. For others, who identify with a community from Central or South America, the term “tribe affiliation” is not relevant so they choose to share their “Indigenous identity”. By sharing these varied identities, we hope to celebrate our diverse Indigenous team.

New Rep’s Indigenous People’s Land Recognition
By Dr. Mishy Lesser and Michael J. Bobbitt
All teaching, learning, and performing take place on Indigenous Lands. We are coming to you from a place originally called Pigsgusset, which means Meadows At The Widening Of The River. Now referred to as Watertown, this land is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Pequossette Band of the Massachusett People and their neighbors, the Nipmuc and Wampanoag Nations. While Pigsgusset is likely an inaccurate spelling of the original name, rendered according to English colonial settlers, and we do not know its pronunciation according to the First Peoples of the land, we make this acknowledgement to offer recognition and respect to the original inhabitants of this place and their descendants today, especially because the Indigenous history of Watertown has been erased for the last four hundred years. New Repertory Theatre commits to supporting Indigenous peoples and their cultures by hiring and supporting artists who are
Indigenous and want to tell their own stories.
