Where to Swim and SurfSwim in the ocean or in pools. Many lakes, rivers and ponds in the area are unsuitable. Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach have separate ordinances regarding surfing. Phone Beach Safety Division or local police for appropriate surf areas and times.
Painting old Florida is a passion for Ormond Beach-based artist Barbara Perrotti.
Her impressionistic style shows a strong sense of aesthetics. She has been featured prominently in both public and private collections. Perrotti’s work appears in the Museum of Arts and Sciences and Halifax Hospital, to name a few.
Perrotti delights in experimenting with diverse colors, shapes and textures, but most of all she enjoys working quickly and spontaneously.
She is a past recipient of a Professional Artist Development Grant from Volusia County. Her related activities include teaching weekly classes and workshops as well as judging and jurying art shows. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Volusia County Cultural Alliance and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.
Her work can be seen in a number of galleries in Central Florida. She is a member of Landscape Artists International and International Plein Air Painters.
Far and Near Horizons: World Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists, features several of her works. The book can be ordered at Amazon.com.

daytona beach shores, deland, ormond beach,& new smyrna beach
FFrom the moment you step on the sun drenched
beach you know this vacation will be the start of
something big. Your senses are enhanced as you
take in everything around you: There’s the sound
of the crashing surf, the smell of the ocean, the taste
of salt water in the air and the overall beauty that
surrounds you.
We would like to welcome you to Daytona Beach.
This is the beginning of what we know will be an
unforgettable vacation here and in the surrounding
beachside and waterfront neighborhoods: Ormond
Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach,
Ponce Inlet and DeLand.
Here, it’s never a matter of what to do; it’s a
matter of finding the time to do it all! Take an early
morning jog or bike ride along the beach and watch
the sun rise as the day unfolds. Discover that surfing
Daytona Beach style has more than one meaning. Join
the old timers and learn the art of surf fishing or head
to the Inlet for what’s dubbed the best surfing along
the Eastern Seaboard. For a more laid back experience,
simply relax and soak up some rays.
There are any number of distinctive seaside shops
and galleries located within walking distance of the
beach. Explore some of the area’s most unique shops
and pick up everything from a one of a kind souvenir
to a special gift for yourself. Discover our museums
and art galleries and when you need a rest from it all,
there are dozens of cafes, diners and restaurants to
satisfy your every craving.
Whether you are here for business or pleasure,
we will help you to explore the area and find the best
places to shop and dine. It is with good reason that
this is one of America’s favorite vacation spots! There
are nature trails for quiet reflection, historic homes and
landmarks all around and of course what the area is
best known for is it’s car racing.
The Greater Daytona Beach Area attracts
more than eight million visitors annually and is
appropriately dubbed, The World’s Most Famous
Beach. We welcome you to our beach and know that
your visit will provide unforgettable memories you
will treasure for years to come.

activities in the daytona beach area
TThink of the Daytona Beach area as the world’s largest
family playground.
Whether you are in town for business or pleasure,
we hope you will take time to explore Ormond Beach,
New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet, DeLand and the entire
Daytona Beach area.
The range of things to do is boundless and limited
only by your personal interests and time constraints.
Indulgences can include playing world class tennis on
the sports finest courts. Whether you are a seasoned player
looking to brush up on your game or a novice considering
your first lesson, playing tennis here will surely add some
spark to your game.
Golf enthusiasts can play on courses
designed by the legends of the sport. Courses
planned by the likes of Arnold Palmer and
Greg Norman are highly regarded for their
playability and outstanding natural settings.
Players will be thrilled to discover 25 courses
representing a variety of challenges, all within
30 minutes of the beach.
Whether your passion is fresh or saltwater
fishing, you’ll be amazed at the number of
choices there are in both venues. Select from
laid back trips to more challenging angling
excursions. Looking for more excitement? Go
out on a deep sea charter and cast for trophy
fish or grab a guide and do some bass fishing
in the St. Johns River, one of only a handful of rivers in the
world that flows north.
Indulge in one of our many spas. Make a pilgrimage
to The Daytona International Speedway and take a tour
to learn about NASCAR’s humble beginnings. Learn to
hang ten in the place known as one of the top surfing
destinations in the world, or marvel as you watch the
pros tackle the big waves. Take a boat ride and discover
the ecology of our rivers and lakes. Or for the truly
adventurous, float high above it all on a zip line.
Art aficionados will want to visit one of our many
galleries. There are several museums where history buffs
can learn more about the area.
These are the adventures that create memories that last
forever so don’t forget to bring along a camera to capture
every moment.

Did you knowthat man’s best friend is welcomed on beaches in St. Johns, Volusia and Flagler Counties?
It’s the perfect way to spend quality time with your pet - a day at the beach!
The beaches of Volusia, Flagler and St. Johns Counties provide an ideal venue. Both Smyrna Dunes and Lighthouse Point Parks in Volusia County are ‘pet-friendly’.
In Flagler County, the area just north of Gamble Rogers State Park and 13th Street is set aside to bring along man’s best friend and in St. Johns County, pets are permitted on any county maintained beach and that includes horses!
Be sure to bring doggie bags and water. While some parks provide bags to pick up after your pet, others do not. Be a good pet owner and don’t leave a mess for others.
Know that most beaches require your pet to be on a leash at all times and make sure the section of beach you visit is designated, ‘pet-friendly’. Failure to do so could result in sti nes.

shopping in the daytona
beach area
FFrom sundries to souvenirs; casual beachwear to
swimsuits, shopping in the Daytona Beach area promises
to be a satisfying experience for even the most finicky
of customers. If you enjoy shopping – and who doesn’t
– a variety of experiences await you here and in the
surrounding communities of Ormond Beach, Daytona
Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach and DeLand.
Shops in our beachside neighborhoods will provide all
the necessities, from the toothbrush left behind to luxuries
like original creations by local artisans that will accentuate
any room. Look carefully and you might discover that
little store carrying all the things you crave and didn’t
know you needed!
If those beach days put you in the mood for a casual
coastal-style makeover, head to one of our many shops.
You’ll find one-of-a-kind tropical looks available in a variety
of boutiques, malls and department stores all with something
to suit your every whim. Add a little pizzazz with brightly
colored baubles, a multicolored tote, or beaded sandals
that will complete your new ‘beachy’ look.
Our historic shopping districts will take you back in
time with their vintage architecture. Stroll along Beach
Street in Daytona Beach; Flagler Avenue and Canal
Street in New Smyrna Beach, or on Woodland Avenue in
DeLand. You’ll discover unusual shops and boutiques
tucked away in historic buildings with a past of their
own. In addition, each street offers exposure to museums
and art galleries which act as appropriate decorations
to further enhance your shopping experience. Curb
side cafes and charming restaurants dot each district,
providing a respite and slight interruption to your
shopping excursion. No matter which you choose,
each district offers a modern day shopping experience
with an old fashioned feel.
Shopping allows you to not only enjoy your vacation,
but to bring back memories in the form of souvenirs that
will keep your holiday alive for years to come. And you
don’t need to fret over making large or fragile purchases.
Many stores will gladly ship your special treasure back
home for you.

Floridians are known for their own special style. They took the necessity of having to dress for hot, humid weather and ran with it. Florida’s "resort casual" has become the fashion of choice.
Resort casual style is all about ease! It’s characterized by sundresses, tunics, capris, khakis, chinos, tropical prints, bright colors, sheer fabrics, caftans, boat shoes, and flip flops.
Flip-flops have been around for six thousand years...
Speaking of flip-flops, did you ever wonder how they became all the rage? Flip-flops have been around for six thousand years and were first depicted on Egyptian murals around 4000 BC. They began appearing in America in the 1950s when soldiers brought back Japanese zori (similar to flip-flops) as souvenirs. Since then, the designs have changed flip-flops have become a pervasive part of Florida beach style, and you’ll even find them on some high fashion runways!

IIt’s the vacation destination that has it all! No matter
your whim or fancy, there’s something special about
New Smyrna Beach that will make you never want to
leave. From the abundant year round activities to the
unassuming ambiance, you will be mesmerized by the
beauty that is New Smyrna Beach.
It is the second oldest city in North America, trailing
the coattails of St. Augustine, though recent findings
indicate its origins might actually predate that of the
Ancient City. Soak up the past at the New Smyrna Beach
Museum of History, and then take a stroll through the
Sugar Mill Ruins and the Old Fort.
new smyrna beachThe 13 miles of white powdery beach has
been named among the top ten in the nation and
it’s easy to see why. It’s a setting the entire family
can enjoy. New Smyrna Beach is a surfer’s
paradise with the area around the Inlet rated
among the finest in the world and the best for
hanging ten along the entire Eastern Seaboard.
The city has consistently been named in
the top 100 small art communities in America.
Galleries abound and the local scene consists
of monthly art walks and an annual Plein Air
Festival. It’s also home to the world renowned
Atlantic Center for the Arts, which brings artists
of every genre together with those who want to
learn more about their special techniques.
Bordered on the pristine Indian River, the setting is
ideal for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding.
Aquatic birds, frolicking dolphin and Florida’s sea cow,
the slow moving manatee, are among the inhabitants
you’ll find along North America’s most biologically
diverse estuary.
Take time to shop in the city’s two historic districts.
Flagler Avenue and Canal Street promise to deliver on
their diverse shops and boutiques where you will find the
perfect gift for yourself or your loved ones back home.
The architecture will fascinate and you can take it all in at
a sidewalk café or charming restaurant offering a variety
of traditional Florida favorites.

local dininga world of dining choices
YYou are on vacation and your taste buds are gearing
up for the adventure. Palate pleasers abound with
culinary options that range from traditional comfort food
to the exotic. But what you really yearn for is something
gratifying, both in the food and in the surroundings.
The backdrop for your dining experience can be
riverfront with a panoramic view of a marina or boats
passing by. Or you can opt for an oceanfront seat and watch
as breakers whip the shore. There are outdoor cafes where
you can people watch and indoor venues that offer music
and entertainment. Whether you dine on picnic
tables or with linen tablecloths, crystal and silver,
each venue promises a new experience.
Prices run the gamut and you’ll discover that
rarely do you find a budget buster. You can find
everything from an oversized fish sandwich in a
basket brimming with onion rings to the catch of
the day, artistically placed on a plate where the
appearance rivals the flavor.
Dressing for most venues requires nothing
more formal than shorts and sandals; others require
a smart casual look, but the choice is yours.
Local restaurants offer such delights as slow
cooked barbequed ribs and fresh caught fish,
shrimp, oysters and clams in an array of cooking
preferences that range from broiled, to blackened
or lightly sautéed.
If you feel more adventurous, go for an
ethnic flair. Our restaurants offer cuisine with roots in the
Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish and French
cultures. Our chefs take pride in using fresh Florida
vegetables and herbs and the presentation is as pretty
as it is tasty.
As the day draws to an end, take a leisurely stroll
along the beach and indulge in an appropriate dessert.
A hand-dipped ice cream cone will complete the mood.
Spoil yourself! You are on vacation!

st. augustine,
Your visit wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the
old Spanish fort, an imposing waterfront structure where
Native Americans first met the Spanish explorer Pedro
Menendez de Aviles in 1565. From here, take a stroll along
the painstakingly restored Bridge of Lions, built in 1927.
Bell towers and spires will inspire and delight as well as
provide a desirable backdrop for a vacation photo that is
guaranteed to make your friends back home envious.
Shopping along the bricked streets is never
disappointing. Each street is brimming with stores touting
everything from swimwear to antiques. You’ll find dining
as diverse as the city itself. In the evening, music fills the
air both indoors and outside at restaurants, wine bars and
in St. Augustine’s top notch clubs. In addition, there are a
variety of ongoing activities that can be enjoyed year round.
We hope you will immerse yourself in everything St.
Augustine has to offer and that the memories of your visit
will become part of your history.
With its cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, unique
shops and charming bed and breakfast inns, you’ll find St.
Augustine to have a distinct European flavor. But if you
take a closer look, you will discover the nation’s oldest
city to be full of modern day surprises. It’s hard to believe
that a town so full of tradition could be so cool!
Welcome to St. Augustine, the gateway to cultural
travel and host to miles of sun drenched beaches, pristine
waterways and preserves. Whether you are a frequent or
first time visitor, this book will assist you in making the
most of your time in the Old City, Anastasia Island,
Ponte Vedra and the beaches.
History comes alive as visitors ramble through narrow
brick streets lined with well-preserved buildings including
colonial homes, wooden pioneer structures and a variety
of architectural styles, many built during railroad magnate
Henry Flagler’s era, a time that marked a renaissance of
sorts in the city.

activities in the st. augustine area
Take the plunge and immerse yourself in the history
of St. Augustine where stately buildings, bell towers,
spires and other architectural delights abound. The
nation’s oldest city promises to captivate and enchant.
Take a romantic horse drawn carriage ride or hop on
the trolley for a narrated tour where you can explore the
Native American, colonial and pirate past of the Old City.
Your guide will point out historic dwellings, Flagler
railroad era buildings and quaint Victorians homes on
route. Check out the beautiful Tiffany glass windows
and chandeliers at the former Hotel Ponce de Leon,
now part of Flagler College. Challenge yourself as you
climb the 219 steps to the peak of the St. Augustine
Lighthouse. The reward is at the top where you will
have a panoramic view of the nation’s oldest port, the
beaches and waterways.
Fishing is just minutes away. Golfers can play at
courses designed by the best in the sport: legends like
Sam Sneed and Jack Nicklaus. Golf aficionados will
want to take a walk down memory lane at the World
Golf Hall of Fame where you will be immersed in
photos and memorabilia of golf days gone by.
Stroll through art galleries and museums dotted all
around the city and learn more about the area’s history.
After all, history encompasses you in St. Augustine!
There are more than 100 parks and preserves in the
Ancient City, Anastasia Island and Ponte Vedra areas, all
brimming with trails for hiking, bird watching, biking and
kayaking. A string of beaches lined with golden sand offer
opportunities for horseback riding at sunset, surfing or
sunbathing.
The city comes alive after dark with eateries, wine
bars and nightclubs offering food, music and your favorite
libations. And there’s another option – if you dare! Take
a chilling ghost tour and learn about what lurks in the
corners of the Old City and roams the halls by night.

Part of the fun in wine tasting is deciding what you nd is delicious. Everyone has a dierent set of taste buds, so drink the wines you like with the food you like.
Instead of red with meat, white with sh, think about balancing avors. For example, pair delicately avored foods with light-bodied wines. A lightly avored sh calls for a crisp, light white wine. Deeper avored salmon calls for a avorful, buttery white wine. Bold, spicy foods require a full-bodied wine that’s slightly sweet and full of avor. Seasoned dishes like pasta and savory meats are balanced with a rich, robust red wine.

shopping st. augustine area
Like explorers who came before, you will find shopping
in the Old City to be a treasure hunt where you can discover
gems at every turn. You’ll unearth the latest in fashion trends,
jewelry and chic accessories as well as find one of a kind
souvenirs, vintage maps, books and linens and distinctive
household furnishings.
Think of the historic district as a giant department store
with the street acting as a grand walkway leading into each
shop. On St. George Street, many of the old homes have
second stories where boutiques and restaurants exist. This is
a pedestrian friendly street, making it easy to venture in and
out of the unique stores, shops and dining establishments.
As you stroll St. George Street, you are never far from
anything. It is here you will find the oldest locally owned
clothing store, H.W. Davis Co. It has been operating
continuously since 1894.
The oldest byway in the city is Aviles Street where
cafes and benches beckon as you wander down the bricked
thoroughfare. There is a plethora of boutiques, art galleries
and even a wine bar that will keep you occupied an entire
afternoon. Stop by the Historical Library where you can
immerse yourself in the past before you resume shopping
in the present.
Within walking distance of both streets, you will find
galleries brimming with paintings, sculptures and the like,
all created by emerging artists. Taking some of the local color
back home will not only grace your walls for years to come,
you might just get lucky and discover that you bought the
next Picasso! No need to fret over shipping. Many galleries
will send your purchases home.
The Old City is overflowing with antique shops where
you can search for old maps, French and English antiques,
rare artifacts, books and other collectibles.
Beyond the historic district and only a short drive away
to surrounding neighborhoods like Ponte Vedra Beach and
Anastasia Island, you’ll find outlet malls offering designer
clothing at bargain prices, flea markets and dozens of
beachside boutiques and specialty stores just waiting
to be discovered.
Ponce de Leon didn’t just discover St. Augustine.
He paved the way for a shopper’s paradise to be enjoyed
by visitors for years to come.

WWelcome to Palm Coast and the
Flagler Beaches.
Imagine finding a secret place where you
could truly lay back and relax; where the
worries of the day just drifted away. There is
such a place. Locals refer to it as the quiet side of
Florida. Sandwiched between bustling Daytona
Beach and historic St. Augustine, the area
known as Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches is
Florida’s best kept secret. Cliché, but true.
The seaside village of Flagler Beach is the
epitome of laid back. It was recently named one
of America’s Coolest Small Towns by Budget
Travel and it’s easy to see why. You won’t find
high-rise, chain hotels here. Instead, there are
colorful cottages, quaint bed and breakfast inns
and charming Mom and Pop owned motels. And
no matter your choice of accommodations, you are
always just steps away from one of the area’s best beaches.
Here you can soak up some rays, learn to surf in
water perfectly suited to the sport, or for landlubbers,
fish or walk along the iconic Flagler Pier. With
19 miles of cinnamon colored beach, you can easily
find your own private hideaway. And if your favorite
pooch is accompanying you, there are several pet
friendly beaches where they too can enjoy a day
at the beach.
Take your vacation to a different level when you swim
with the dolphins at Marineland Dolphin Adventure. Bike
or hike along more than 100 miles of designated nature
trails. Do some backwater paddling in the St. Johns River
or the Intracoastal Waterway. Golf on courses fit for
and designed by champions, including links right on
the ocean!
And if all that makes you hungry, over 180 restaurants
offering everything from fresh caught seafood to
mouthwatering burgers, are available to satisfy your
every craving.
When you are looking for a peaceful, quiet getaway,
look no farther than Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches.

“Dinner Time” Artist: Linda Holmes
IIn St. Augustine, Anastasia Island or the Beaches, you
will never have a problem finding a place to dine, but
you might find choosing where problematic. You see,
the area is a food lover’s paradise.
Dining options are seemingly endless. From a late
night dinner of freshly caught blackened grouper to
a stacked fish sandwich in a basket overflowing with
fries, you can get what you want, when you want it
and anywhere you want to have it.
Newly caught Florida seafood accompanied by
garden-fresh vegetables is the pride of many dining
establishments and is always a good choice for guests.
At more casual eateries, you can have fish nuggets
nestled in a bed of tartar sauce or shrimp accompanied
by a tangy mango salsa, all while listening to a band
playing the music of the islands.
Toss down oysters on the half shell while at an open
air diner. Your olfactory sense will thank you as you
alternatively breathe fresh air punctuated only by the
wonderful scent of food.
Watch dolphin play as you enjoy an elegant waterfront
restaurant. Sip on designer coffee and people watch at a
sidewalk café. Share a romantic supper by candlelight. The
large selection of venues will suit your every whim.
St. Augustine is brimming with innovative eating
establishments and their accomplished chefs are known
for their imaginative dishes. From traditional to nouvelle
cuisine, whatever your personal taste in dining, Spanish,
Italian, continental cuisine or edgy Asian fusion you’ll love
our restaurants. And if ethnic flavors aren’t appealing, you
are minutes away from classic favorites like a slow-smoked
barbeque to a burger topped with all the fixings. Many
restaurants offer live music to complete your
dining experience.
And at the end of the day, treat yourself to a rich, chocolaty
concoction, a velvety ice cream cone, or a tangy slice of key
lime pie. Indulge! You and your taste buds are on vacation!

Stu to do withOrangesDid you know
that there’s more to Florida oranges than making juice?
Oranges have long been a symbol of Florida and probably the state’s best known export. The liquid from the colorful fruit has satised the taste buds of juice groupies from around the world. But there are many other uses for the fruit as well. The aptly named Orange is a versatile product that can be used to add zing to just about any recipe. Uses range from a tangy syrup that can be trickled over ice cream to a sour version used to avor pork and poultry dishes.
