MONASH BLUES, ORMOND AT TOP OF LISTONLY UNBEATEN TEAMS AFTER TWO ROUNDSNorth just beat St. Bernard's, C'au/. Coll. draw

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Page 2THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 3, 1975

Monash Blues and Ormond are the only undefeated teams after two roundsand Monash hold top place on percentage.

North Old Boys scrambled home from St. Bernard's by four points with agoal just before the siren while Caulfield Grammarians and Collegians playeda drawn game.

All five A Section games were close at the interval, with markins of four, five, nine, 10 and 11 points, but in most cases it was a different story in thesecond half.

Ormond finished a little too stronglyfor Reservoir Old Boys and won by16 points but it was only in the lastfew minutes that they clinched thematch .

The defences of both sides were ontop in the first quarter but Ormond, although beaten in the ruck, were get-ting drive from their rovers and ledby 5 points at half-time .

Reservoir went to a 19-point leadin the third term then a string of be-hinds robbed them of a chance toestablish what might well have beena winning lead and they were only 16points ahead at the last change .

But Reservoir held on gamely in thefinal quarter and Ormond had a hardstruggle to gain the lead.

North Old Boys trailed St . Bernard'sby 11 points at the interval but a 6-goal burst carried them to a 25-pointlead. St . Bernard's came back in thelast term but were beaten by 4 points .

Old Trinity started well against Co-burg with a 6-goal first quarter butthen lapsed into shockingly inaccuratekicking for goal . They kicked 1-6 inthe second term and were still 9 pointsahead but managed only 1-7 with thewind in the third quarter while Coburg

kicked 4-1 against it to be 3 points infront, and went on to win by 31points .

Old Paradians kept with UniversityBlacks for three quarters but theBlacks ran away in the last to wineasily, while Monash outplayed Gee-long in the second half to score bynearly 8 goals .

Kew beat Old Haileybury by 13points and Ivanhoe won by 15 pointsfrom De La Salle in a high-scoringgame .

Collegians had five more scoringshots than Caulfield Grammar butcould manage only a draw. Old Scotchcrashed by nearly 9 goals against Uni-versity Blues and Marcellin beat OldCarey by almost 8 goals .

Poor shooting contributed to Mel-bourne High's 39-point defeat by St.Kilda CBC, who had one shot less, andUni . High needed 11 more shots thanParkside to win by a goal (9-16 to10-4) .

Old Melburnians' accuracy helpedthem to a 44-point win over OldBrighton and better forward work en-abled Alphington to beat Brunswickby 3 goals.

UMPIR'E'S CORNERBy Kevin McKay

HOLDING THE BALL - HOLDING THEMAN

The player with the ball must be tackledcorrectly - if he is ridden into the groundit a free kick for "in the back" - if hisarms are pinned to his sides and the ballfalls to the ground, it is "play on" - if

a dplayer ofnthe sba la l by deliberateeither aempt to

or kicking and does not connect, it is"play-on" . If a player lies on or over theball and is tackled correctly (not jumpedon) it's a free kick for holding the ball .

REPORTABLE OFFENCESIt is not generally known what constitutes

a reportable offence .The majority of footballers in our Assoc-

iation play the game as it should be played- hard and tough but fair, and their de-meanour is beyond reproach .

However unfortunately there are a fewplayers who let their teams down and it maycome as a surprise the extent of reportableoffences in accord with Rule 28 :-1 . Goes over an opponents mark and does

not go back immediately when ordered .2. Unduly holds an opponent who hastaken a mark

3 . Wilfully wastes time .4 . Unduly interferes with a player whilst

such player is kicking for goal .5 . Disputes the decision of an umpire .6 . Unduly interferes with or assaults, oruses abusive, threatening, or insultinglanguage or behaviour towards an um-pire during the progress of the match,or within or without the oval on theday of the match .

7. Assaults another player .8 . Uses abusive, threatening or insultinglanguage, or otherwise misconducts him-self during the match, or within theoval on the day of the match .9 . Throws an opponent after that playerhas taken a mark or after the ball isotherwise out of play .

10. Violently pushes an opponent aftersuch opponent has had his kick .11 . Intentionally trips or kicks or attemptsto trip or kick an opponent.12 . Strikes or attempts to strike a playereither with his hand or arm.13 . Is guilty of unduly rough play .14 . Remains on the playing ground notwearing proper uniform, after beingwarned by the field umpire .

You will agree that the foregoing givesan umpire very wide powers .

However you are assured that umpireswill not abuse that power, but it is up to all

P,age 14

players to do the right thing by their ownclub and by the Victorian Amateur FootballAssociation.

All umpires should know that -A. Boots and hands must be inspected in

the dressing rooms .B . It is unforgiveable for an umpire to

turn his back on the play.C . A player may hold the ball indefinitely

provided he does not run more than 10 met-res or is not retarded by an opponent.D . fact t ball, in

nhasstuckor touched anupireshall notprevent the scoring of a goal or behind .

This would also apply to a trainer on hi sway to attend - or attending an injuredplayer .

E If the ball is kicked and hits the be-hind post on the full, it is "out on the full"and a free kick shall be given .

New Club's Coach Is No-.New To The Amateurs

Mike McArthur-Allen, coach of newclub. Bulleen United, has had quite rvaried football career, which includesseveral seasons with the V.A.F.A.

He first played with South WarrnamboolUnder 18's in the Hampden Football Leaguein 1964 and the following year he turnedout with Camberwell Under 19's in theV.F.A .

From 1966 to 1969 he played Amateur foot-ball, firstly with St Pat's (Ballarat) OldCollegians, before going to Ormond in 1969 .He joined his present club, Bulleen United,

in 1970 and has played 79 games with them .He was appointed Captain and Coach in

1972 and last year was elected a Life Mem-ber .

In 1973 Mike attended a 4-day V .F .L .Coaching Seminar and received a V.F .L .Coaching Certificate .

He has always played on the forwardline or as a ruck-rover, but unfortunately hassuffered several severe injuries during hiscareer including concussion, an internal eyeinjury and a back injury .

But even these injuries have not dampenedhis love for the game .

Mike is a great admirer of Ron BarassI'scoaching techniques with emphasis on posi-tive thinking, but not over-confidence .

He believes that players must be discip-lined in their thinking to combine as a unit .

Mike rnamboola and Kenn Rowse tat Ormond as th e

best coaches he has played under .

Finally, here is his coaching philosophy :"The error is not in t rying and then failingThe error is in failing to try. "In private life, Mike is a third year

student-teacher at Rusden College and isPresident of the Rusden Student Council .

Real veterans to reach milestones werePeter Hutchinson (Power House) with 250games and 6 club best and fairest to hiscredit, while Bill "Snow" McNamara (Park-side) popular Bill Rodda, Parkside captain, and Kew veteran, Terry Mort all ran on fortheir 150th game.

Last year's premiers Coburg, got a frightwhen Univ. Blues kicked 6-8 to the opposi-tion's 1 .1 in the last quarter to go down by8 points .

Critics were pleased with the new "out ofbounds rule" as it had cut out a lot ofnegative football .

Monash captain Nick Rogers kicked 8goals in a fine exhibition of centre half for-ward play.

Old Carey had started the season in greatstyle under new coach Graham Johnston, former Essendon half-forward who had somepromising new players in the team, JohnGoode, Colin Bell and Geoff Freeman .

Melbourne High were pleased with thepromise being shown in the Reserves by full-forward Barrie "Biddy" Macdonald .

Coburg and Foatscray Tech. were cele .brating their thirtieth year in the V.A .F .A .,having joined in 1935, as did Carnegie (whendid they drop out?) .

President of the Umpires' Association wasAlan Duckworth, who, surprising to thosewho still see him on the job, had the honourof umpring the first game at St . KildaCricket Ground when it was our centralground .

Alan played with Parkside and Fairfieldfor 8 years before taking up the whistle.(Great amateur career - Ed. )

150 games up to Vic Pilkington (De LaSalle) and Barry Macdonald (M .H.S .O .B .)while Grahame Daff, Collegian's veterancentre half back played his 200th game.

Interstate coaches were Peter Rhoden(for the team to play South Australia) andMaurie Considine (for the team to playTasmania) .

25 Years AgoUniversity Blacks and Blues met for the

first time in many years . Scores were levelat I time but Blacks were more accuratein the last quarter with 4 .1 to the Blues 1 5 .

The team selected to represent Victoriain Adelaide was Doug Arnold (HamptonRovers) Capt ., John Brady (Univ .
