the XS4 electronic lock with keypad is a brand new product that provides increased levels of security and control. For doors where extra security may be required, it offers users a choice of multiple security authentication methods to control access including proximity card, combined use of a PIN code + proximity card or a separate keypad code.

Designed for use in schools, colleges, universities, student dorms, airports, government buildings, military installations and for use on any doors where an extra layer of security is required, the electronic lock with keypad is the latest addition to the innovative XS4 range. Smart, secure and innovative, it needs no hard wiring and provides a totally wire free networked electronic locking solution with a great range of features. It is also available in a wireless version for online real-time control.

the lock can be operated in three modes: proximity card only, Pin (Personal Identification Number) code + proximity card; or keypad code only. With standard proximity card mode the lock is locked at all times until opened with the users proximity card that has access rights to the room.

When using PIN code + card mode each user has their own personal code. typically this might be used

in student dorms, where extra security and dual authentication (presenting both a card and typing in the PIN code) are needed. users can have up to an eight-digit PIN code.

In keypad code only mode, the lock itself has an access code that is used for user authentication.

every user that goes through that door knows the keypad code. When two users share the same office or room, they are the only ones that know the keypad code of their room. Several calendars can be programmed every day, giving the ability to use passage mode type opening during the day, and dual authentication only at night. users can have up to an 8-digit KeyPAD code.

Available in european, Scandinavian and ANSI wide body versions in both Mifare/DeSfire and HID iclass technologies, the new XS4 electronic lock with keypad can handle up to 64,000 doors and 4,000,000 users per system and store the last 1,000 events in its audit trail memory. Minerva Security Services of essex have been at the forefront of a high-profile biometrics installation at uBM Plc’s uK headquarters in London, at the height of organising the International Fire & Security exhibition 2012.

Organisers of IFSec 2012, uBM required four ievo fingerprint readers, two ultimate and two Micro. the ultimate’s are used to secure the building’s entrance and exit turnstiles and is fixed on to a turnstile that will be used by visitors. Micro will be responsible for securing the ninth floor office area inside the uBM premises, and will be installed on the main area door to grant access and egress to employees and visitors in that particular department.

Minerva Security chose the ultimate biometric reader for the main building’s entrance due to its robust exterior

ppmA offers china offices to all uK manufacturers Manufacturers looking to export to china are being offered the opportunity to enter this market by using the offices of one of the uK’s most prominent manufacturing trade associations, slashing usual market entry costs. the PPMA Group of Associations, a non-profit making group representing uK manufacturing is offering their unique Dragon Service to all manufacturers looking to export to china. the service which has previously only been open to its members, enables a manufacturer to ‘dip their toe in the water’ in china with very little risk and at minimal cost.

the Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA) will employ on their own payroll a member of staff to work for any uK manufacturer interested in the china market and will handle all chinese Hr and employment issues. the employee would be re-charged at cost and a small share of the chinese office overhead. this model also enables the exporter to enter or exit the chinese market with only one month’s notice and at very little cost.

AmG supplies integrated transmission solution for OMIFcO AMG has supplied their AMG3700 series transmission solution for the new integrated security and surveillance solution at the OMIFcO fertiliser plant in OMAN. the solution has been implemented by Majees technical Services LLc, Oman’s leading systems integrator for large scale plant security solutions and oil and gas sites.

Sekhar Subramonian, General Manager at Majees, said: “the OMIFcO plant is located on the coast south of Muscat and has facilities for ships docking and loading, as all the production output is exported for use in India. the security and surveillance solution is very comprehensive and includes cctV, Access control, and PIDS on the fences, as well as key tracking, all of which are integrated into the Security Management System. Additional Access control systems are provided, along with turnstiles and quick folding gates. the transmission solution has been designed as a Drop-and-Insert ring solution with 50% spare capacity for future proofing. As the site is so massive, this was the most cost effective transmission system design, as using more conventional point-to-point systems would have massively increased the required cable infrastructure. We have also integrated capabilities for the perimeter intruder detection system to interact with the cctV solution via the

With everyone from Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung, Google and many other

mobile telephone operators all racing to capture a slice of the emerging market for products and services related to Near Field communication (NFc) technology, its long anticipated introduction into the widespread business marketplace is coming ever closer.

Major players are busy developing applications and forming partnerships ready to roll the technology out into the business and consumer domain. One of the drivers behind this is the new generation of smart phones and tablet computers.

With NFc technology in your smart phone, you can use your phone as if it was a credit card and many manufacturers are getting ready to support NFc technology by inserting a form of electronic payment wallet or e-purse into their handsets that will enable users to make contactless payments in much

the same way as the new generation Barclaycard contactless credit card.

this is a cashless way for customers to pay for low value purchases, typically of around £15 and under, more quickly and conveniently. users simply hold the contactless Barclaycard up to a secure reader instead of inserting it into a terminal and the transaction is completed in less than a second.

Backing this up Google added NFc support to its most recent Android releases and has a strong incentive to offer NFc services like mobile coupons and rewards and the company is already active in these areas. Payment providers like Visa, Mastercard, American express and online payment companies such as PayPal also want a piece of the NFc pie and mobile operator O2 has already revealed that it is developing a mobile payment app for the forthcoming iPhone models.

But Apple is not alone in developing possible NFc connectivity. Among the growing band of smart phone companies looking to integrate with the

technology, rival manufacturer research In Motion (rIM) makers of the BlackBerry, are about to run an NFc payment trial of their own in the uS with Bank of America.

Beginning this year, the bank is inviting selected customers to take part in the trial. It will send participants a new battery cover to retro-fit to their BlackBerry phones – relevant models being the curve 8520 and 8530; Bold 9000, 9650 and 9700; and tour 9630 – with an antenna and microSD card to make them ready for swipe-based contactless payments using NFc technology.

the trial will last for a few months, and customers will be able to store up to four of their credit cards on their retrofitted BlackBerries. the handsets can then be used to pay for purchases at Mastercard terminals simply by presenting the phone to the reader in the store. If all goes well, the trial is expected to lead the way for many, if not most, BlackBerry devices having built-in NFc capability by the end of the year. >

what is nFC?Near Field communications (NFc) is a short range wireless technology enabling communications between devices. It operates at 13.56MHz over a range of a few centimetres (typically less than 4cm) and complements many popular consumer level wireless technologies, by utilizing the key elements in existing standards for contactless card technology such as ISO/Iec 14443 and JIS-X 6319-4.

One of the main advantages of NFc is the convergence it offers i.e. turning the phone into a multi-application device. It can be compatible with existing contactless card infrastructure, enabling a user to utilise one device across many different systems. the aim of NFc is to allow contactless transactions and connectivity in a fully interoperable way and make life easier and more convenient for consumers around the world by making it simpler to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices just with a touch.

Its principal application is intended mainly for use in mobile phones as a smart payment device where it will act as a debit/credit payment card but plenty of other uses are possible including applications in the fields of transport, ticketing, access control, car parking, loyalty, coupons, service discovery (tag reading), mobile marketing and social networking.

In the case of a mobile coupon, you would see an offer on a ‘smart poster’ in the street, download the discount to your phone and then redeem it in the shop by presenting your phone at the payment terminal. NFc can also offer opportunities for retail marketing, where merchants can further promote products/goods and get better customer information from those consumers who use their NFc phone in store.

So there are many different uses envisioned beyond mobile financial

payments and one of these, access control, is clearly one of the most exciting use cases for NFc. One of the first applications of this type will very probably be use as an ‘electronic key’.

Room keysJust as proximity smart cards have gradually replaced Magstripe swipe cards, NFc enabled mobile phones will be able to emulate proximity Mifare cards and be used as room keys.

In the hotel industry it will work like this. Guests will make a hotel room reservation via the internet or by telephone as they do now, and will then receive their booking confirmation on their mobile phone.

Ahead of their arrival at the hotel, they will then receive a welcome message and a reminder to check in to their room via their mobile phone. When they arrive at the hotel they can bypass check-in (and its queues) and go straight to their room, their hotel room ‘key’ having been sent to the phone over-the-air. Here they simply present the handset to the reader on the escutcheon – as they would do now with a conventional Mifare smart card – and the door will unlock. the door lock will then communicate with the front desk PMS system (Property Management Software) to let the hotel know the guest has entered the room.

As with a current hotel ‘key’ the phone will only be able to open the door for the programmed access time. At the end of their stay guests will check out with their NFc phone, and once the digital hotel room key stored in the phone expires, access

rights to their room are cancelled and the ‘key’ is then automatically deactivated from the phone.

ConclusionNFc extends the ability of contactless card technology so its future, once all the issues between developers, manufacturers and users are resolved, looks bright. It will enable users to share business cards, make transactions and payments, access information from smart posters or provide credentials for access control systems with a simple touch. And as many companies currently use contactless ID cards to control access to their facilities, NFc should be able to reduce the cost of card issuance and management and thus deliver tangible cost savings to operators and users.

All that remains is for the technology to begin rolling out into the marketplace. But although we’re seeing a lot of activity and progress around NFc right now, the technology’s breakthrough into making the mobile wallet available to mainstream consumers probably won’t happen before 2012, so we’ll just have to wait. in this fashion,” is how Alvaro de Souza, cctV manager at VMI (the company in charge of designing this security project) aptly defined this revolutionary Brazilian security solution.

In 2010, rio Grande energia (rGe) decided a change was in order for its electricity stations. these stations, responsible for the electrical distribution throughout the north-northeast portion of rio Grande do Sul, serve 262 municipalities - representing 51% of all counties in this Brazilian state.

Previously, security at all electricity substations was comprised of an intrusion and alarm system. In turn, these alarm systems were tied into various support stations to alert technical workers of a possible situation.

yet, while straightforward enough, these support stations are generally located a great distance from the outlying electricity substations. In essence, if an alarm were to go off, a maintenance worker would have to place their normal work duties on the backburner, and literally drive for hours to determine the nature of the incident – a waste of both time and company resources.

Additionally, while an alarm might actually relate to a legitimate security threat, it was far more often an everyday occurrence – such as grazing animals wandering too near the facility – that triggered the response. unfortunately, due to the distance between substations and support points, and the fact that these are all located in a rural environment; no infrastructure was in place to support technology such as an live Internet feed. As such, technical workers were forced to spend an increasingly large percentage of their workdays chasing nothing. Both rGe and their employees agreed something needed to be done.

what to be done?this is the question rGe executives asked themselves. the cost of building the infrastructure necessary for Internet access, from the ground up, was cost prohibitive – to say the least. From a conventional security standpoint, the options of providing real-time video… the vital component in order to eliminate this growing time nuisance… were few and far between.

enter Alvaro de Souza and VMI. After considerable time spent pondering possibilities, and ruling others out, Souza chose an inventive path. With the help of Hikvision security technology, it was indeed possible to supply these support stations with the necessary real-time video of each-and-every electricity

substation. the trick was in the DVr, or more specifically, Hikvision’s DS-8104HMI-B Mobile DVr with 3G module.

“We’ve always had great faith in Hikvision technology. But, this project represented a leap from the norm, so we extensively tested the DS-8104HMI-B to make sure it could provide quality images over a 3G network for employees at distant substations to evaluate. Our tests proved the usage of Hikvision mobile DVrs would be a great solution to this sticky problem,” Souza noted.

For this project, the key was to reverse the general process: use the DS-8104HMI-B Mobile DVr as a stationary DVr unit. In doing so, the thorny problem of installing highly-expensive fiber-optic >

cable or cable lines was completely sidestepped.

yet, where one major problem was solved, another presented itself. “Brazil has an unfortunate history of not always having the most stable 3G wireless network. Sometimes problems do arise,” Souza explained. As such, if any power outages – or other network issues arose – this entire 3G solution could collapse. yet this problem was easily remedied by the DS-8104HMI-B 3G’s ability to store a backup at the location site. thus, if any 3G network problems were to occur; one need only travel to the actual site to recover security footage.

the final pieceWhile Hikvision’s mobile DVrs solved the problem of connectivity, another piece still remained: the eyes of the solution. For Souza, compared to overcoming a lack of internet capability with Brazil’s existing 3G network, this was a proverbial piece of cake: “I immediately knew what camera would be best for this solution – Hikvision’s DS-2AF1-617-B Speed Dome. Due to the 128× wide dynamic range and 36 zoom magnification, this was the perfect camera to give employees at these far-off support stations the tools to see if something constituted an actual threat.”

Souza continued: “Furthermore, the DS-2AF1-617-B provides an angle of view to cover 360 degrees – as far as we could ask this

equipment to go. Now when alarm sounds, real-time video through these Hikvision cameras will allow support-station technicians to make an accurate – and resourse saving – optimal choice.” Additionally, Souza noted this speed dome works especially well in a “low-light environment” due to its true day/night imaging.

Further features, such as a 128× wide dynamic range, 540 tVL high resolution, 3D intelligent positioning function, 3D digital noise reduction, and an IP66 rating give this camera the tools to secure every rGe electricity station providing power to this portion of Brazil.

this project, completed in December 2010, could best be summed up by Mr. Souza apropos sentiment: “the rGe solution represents 10% technical understanding and 90% hard work – all tied together with tremendous Hikvision technology.” n

with the £31 million Waterfront Building, which welcomed its first students in September 2008. this landmark six-floor building features two large lecture theatres, 34 teaching rooms, and is the main teaching, learning and social space of ucS. tony russell, head of facilities management at ucS, was responsible for commissioning an entire integrated security management system for the new

Waterfront building to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and premises.

Going the extra mile at the University

to be deployed in the new buildings.Working with the mechanical and

electrical (M&e) contractors for the Waterfront project, together with cyS, tony defined a vision for security and surveillance for the Waterfront and the other two key buildings within Phase One of the ucS building programme. In planning, no specific security threats were envisaged for the Waterfront but core security principles guided the strategy. the key was to provide surveillance to secure entrances, exits, perimeters, high traffic areas and vital building plant and machinery. Access control would allow ucS’ vision of ensuring the wider community can be welcomed to the Waterfront. the public have free access to the ground floor galleries, cafes and information centres, for example. Students and staff use door pass cards to gain access to areas as defined by security with regards to their individual profile.

Milestone XProtect enterprise video management software is at the core of the Waterfront security installation which consists of 71 Mobotix network cameras, including 65 models split between Mobotix M12 dual lens 3 megapixel day/night cameras and Mobotix D12 dome dual lens 3 megapixel day/night cameras. Axis 233D high speed dome network cameras are also used for external monitoring.

XProtect enterprise ‘self-discovers’ all of the cameras on the network with its automatic hardware detection wizard, and allows customized management of the video frame rates for recording the images from each camera, ensuring higher frame rates for areas of high activity or where fine image detail is required, and intelligently adjusting to lower frame rates for cameras covering quieter areas. this saves bandwidth in network utilization.

For access control, 108 cardax proximity card readers protect 81 doors; a total of 14 cardax door controllers control up to eight readers each. the cardax controllers are all linked to the ucS It network and connect into cardax command centre Server.

Milestone XProtect enterprise gives ucS the ability to integrate cardax access control. the university is therefore planning to use Milestone to bring together event data from cardax with images from all network cameras, delivering vital surveillance to support access control incidents.

Managing access/ID cards for 5,000 students and 400 staff is a complex and costly business. ucS uses Microsoft Active Directory which contains all key identification data about ucS students and employees. Identification records include the courses students are attending, and give security and It access privileges in line with individual requirements. to prevent the creation of an additional cardholder database for use with cardax command centre, cyS integrated the university’s Microsoft Active Directory database with cardax. this ensures the latest data is always used automatically, saving vital staff time and resources. cyS has also worked with ucS to bring the ID card production in-house to cut the costs of producing access cards by 70% and deliver a next-day service.

ucS operates a 24-hour control room which contains a single plasma display screen monitor showing all output from Milestone XProtect. All images from the 71 cameras are recorded onto a single server and stored for 28 days. Milestone XProtect allows video to be searched quickly through operator selection of specific camera views, times and dates, or ‘by event’ such as when motion has been detected in a restricted zone. Discs containing video footage of incidents have been produced from the Milestone system for police purposes.

AkzoNobel, the world’s largest producer of coatings and speciality chemicals, has chosen Panasonic scanners

to securely scan, index and store paper-based employee records for its uK employees.

the project objective was to provide a system that would securely scan over 4000 employee files and transfer them to a protected, web-based solution on the Hr Server at AkzoNobel’s data centre.

Gary Winstanley, Hr Manager, uK Shared Service at AkzoNobel explained: “the business began an assessment of the critical areas and identified those where vital information could be more adequately protected from potential disaster using an online, secure approach. One such area was our paper based employee records.

“compiled over many years of business, records that belonged to our longest serving employees can be quite comprehensive and as such producing hard copy duplicates as

a backup would have proved time consuming – as well as not being ideal for the environment due to the amount of paper involved.

“We needed an optimal web-based system that would help us protect our existing hard copy from threats such as fire or flood. Alongside the creation of the central Hr Shared Services in Altrincham, the team would require access to employee files centrally to provide support. We took the view that converting our existing paper-based system to a centrally archived electronic version would be the most economical and most productive option.”

integrated solutionGoing forward, AkzoNobel management then required a document solution that would save space, remove the requirement for staff to perform paper-based tasks on a daily basis, and provide shared access - to maximise the daily efficiency of the business.

Wanting to maximise the budget available, AkzoNobel management selected a DocStor document

During the last two decades the growth of cctV cameras on our streets has exceeded all expectations. the

demand for the installation of equipment and the urgency of this demand have often been secondary to any consideration for the locale into which the cameras are installed. this has led to many buildings being blighted by large cumbersome surveillance assemblies.

technological progress has meant that the size of camera installations has shrunk considerably but blending the cctV system into

something that appears to be part of the surrounding structural fabric is a challenge that has rarely been met. the uK’s major cities have seen massive regeneration over the past ten years and architecture has become an area of public enthusiasm, the interest fuelled in part by mass-audience television programmes showing project restorations.

With these new attitudes has come an awareness that cctV equipment which is out of sympathy with historical architecture can do a lot more than spoil a tourist’s photograph; it can undermine

the aesthetic integrity of a whole neighbourhood.

the role of architects and urban planners in the installation and approval of cctV surveillance is becoming more and more significant since conscientious professionals do not want their carefully designed environments disfigured by overt security assemblies hanging off the side of attractive historic buildings. What is acceptable on an industrial estate will not be tolerated in a Victorian civic building for example.

the diversity of aesthetic requirements even in a single city means that an out-of-the-

box solution is not viable. Simply having products that are considered intrinsically “attractive” will make them look at home on some buildings but they will be every bit as unsightly as a standard unit in other environments.

In the uK, High Wycombe-based conway Security Products has a track record of working on projects where aesthetic integration is key. And this has now been taken to a new level with the introduction of a modular dome that allows a single high-specification unit to operate in many guises.

With ‘listed’ architecture in the uK now being as recent as the ‘red brick’ universities of the 1970s, security consultants are being asked to specify equipment that is visually appropriate for buildings ranging from pure geometric abstractions through to the pantiles of say regency Bath or Brighton, with the Art Deco streamlining of the Hoover Building in west London somewhere in between.

Aesthetic control over historic buildings, streets and public

areas needs to be effective if authentic atmospheres are to be maintained. Obviously a company that manufactures dome assemblies and pan and tilt housings from raw materials at a uK base is going to be well placed to take an intelligent brief and respond with designs that fulfill the technical specifications of urban planners, architects and security consultants as well as their time frames. even minor modifications to a standard item can allow a housing or dome to complement a façade or merge with decorative elements. Matching design to the environment can be a delicate balancing act and a manufacturer who is buying in components from another continent will never be able to react effectively to system design requirements as they change.

the potential intrusiveness of security equipment is most important for planners when they consider the visual impact of historic buildings. But it is crucial in any public space. Installers and manufacturers must work to ensure

that surveillance technology does not intimidate users of a facility and that the privacy of those who work at the site is respected. Hospitals will always be a stumbling block in so far as access to certain areas has to be restricted and yet those excluded should not feel unduly snubbed. Legitimate visitors must never be made to feel unwelcome and medical staff – perhaps specialists from an auxiliary wing and therefore unknown to guards – may need urgent access.

System specifiers and architects should also bear in mind that so-called “aesthetic” challenges are rarely only aesthetic. Often the visual difficulties encountered by security professionals are the result of poor overall planning on the part of architects and facility managers. A well-known New york tower complex – which might best remain nameless – provides a textbook example. Incredibly, the logistics of access control and visitor surveillance were factored in not only after structural design but after the building was occupied. >

Planners and designers who had laboured over the grandeur of a flagship reception were horrified when facility managers, who were complying with safety requirements and brooked no argument, cordoned off large sections of the main portal in order to install access control units. the equipment not only took from the aesthetic impact of the entrance but caused worker and visitor bottlenecks at the start and end of the day.

It is important that urban planners engaged on anything from a new-build project to refurbishment of a listed city building or historic market town, should speak to well-informed security consultants and manufacturers at an early stage. this interaction should be two-way and on-going throughout the works. But such forethought is the exception rather than the rule.

the author knows of only a few examples that buck this trend. the upgrading of cctV as part of the development of the Old Market Square in the city of Nottingham has been achieved with minimal clutter from gantries and poles. Similarly, the restoration of the Victorian areas of Sunderland has integrated cctV with existing structures while there has been architecturally-sensitive use of surveillance units in the King’s cross district of central London and in Grainger town, Newcastle.

But despite the worldwide explosion of cctV installations, few specifiers consider the environmental impact of security equipment and the effective militirisation of public spaces. this lack of planning is most notable in street lighting where overt box-shaped pan and tilts are often mounted on 19th-century-style lamp columns with no attempt to match the cctV housing to its surroundings.

By contrast, conway Security Products has invested in a ground-up design that integrates a powerful camera and dome assembly with a genuine street light. the column is not the company’s interpretation or wild guess as to what a street light might be nor is it the result of a little half-hearted dabbling with a cAD system. It is a street light and so meets the criteria of architects and urban planners. As market towns, historic city centres and their suburbs become disfigured by insensitive use of overt domes and housings, the conway Heritage II offers specifiers and architects an elegant alternative to over-scaled pylons. And recent applications of the conway product show that the civic landscape need not be threadbare, with aggressive cctV units mounted on forbidding stalks.

Designing and producing cctV equipment that suits its environment is always going to be a juggling act between performance and visual appeal. On the one hand if a manufacturer or installer crudely bolts a piece of ornate ironwork onto a standard unit the result will fool few people. conversely, it makes no sense to put a standard dome inside a street

light as its functionality will be compromised which defeats the primary object of the camera.

technically, the Heritage II can be configured to offer, say, best shutter speeds for ANPr applications, optimum performance for both day and night usage, auto-focus control and auto white balance. these levels of customisation to meet the needs of security managers are combined with visual adaptability that can preserve an area’s architectural tone. Avant-garde and ‘signature’ structures such as the London eye and Sir Norman Foster’s Swiss tower with their bold lines can accommodate harsh cctV columns amid modern lighting poles. further remainder of the ongoing vulnerability of infrastructure in the utilities sectors across the globe. utility companies have in fact never been more exposed to risks than in today’s climate, where threats include terrorism, natural disaster, theft and internal crime. Being part of the nation’s critical infrastructure, utilities play a vital role in a country’s ability to sustain itself, and therefore the protection of key facilities such as water treatment works, power plants, remote sites and network infrastructure (particularly electricity substations) has become not only essential, but also high on the political agenda.

to this end, the government has already taken specific actions to ensure the safety and preparedness, for example, of the nation’s water supply in the event of
