About In-sessional English SkillsIn-sessional English Skills provides Englishlanguage support for all students at the University ofKent who are non-native speakers of English. Theprogramme helps you improve your academicEnglish language skills and gives you the chance todiscuss your specific language difficulties with anexperienced language tutor.

What we offer• A free English language support servicethroughout the academic year.

• A ten week cycle of taught modules, delivered inthe Autumn Term and repeated in the Spring term.

• Individual writing tutorials with staff from theCentre for English and World Languages in theAutumn and Spring terms.

• Independent study materials on Moodle for allregistered students.

• A chance to earn up to 20 Employability Pointsper module.

Who In-sessional English Skills is forIf you are studying at Kent, at any level fromFoundation to Postgraduate, and English is not yourfirst language, In-sessional English Skills is for you. Itwill help you improve the accuracy of your grammar,and develop your listening comprehension, seminardiscussion skills and writing style for academicassignments.

Programme structureThe programme consists of four taught modules anda series of individual tutorials.

• Essay Writing• Grammar• Seminar Discussion and Presentation Skills • Listening / Note taking • Individual Writing Tutorials

Essay Writing ED001• Aims: This module guides you through theprocess of writing essays in a format normallyaccepted at British universities.

• Learning outcomes: You will recognise theconventional structures of academic texts and beable to: select suitable material from source texts ,paraphrase accurately, write an assignment thatfollows academic conventions , proof read youressays for relevance, register, coherence andcohesion.

Grammar – ED002 • Aims: This module aims to help you write essaysin structurally correct English and enable you toidentify and correct grammar errors in yourwriting.

• Learning outcomes: You will learn how to: reviewyour writing critically for grammatical accuracy,correct grammatical errors, search for assistanceonline on grammatical issues.

How to apply• You can register for the taught modules byclicking on the Workshop button on your page onthe Student Data System.

• To make an appointment for an individual writingtutorial you should email the address on the In-sessional English Skills page on the Centrefor English and World Languages website.

Seminar Discussion and PresentationSkills – ED003• Aims: This module aims to give you guidance andpractice in seminar discussion skills and thepreparation, organisation and delivery ofpresentations in an academic context.

• Learning outcomes: You will learn how to:discuss academic topics in an appropriateregister; select and organise suitable content,plan the structure, and deliver a presentation onyour specialist subject.

Listening Comprehension/Note taking– ED004• Aims: This module aims to improve yourunderstanding of a range of spoken texts. Whilstplacing emphasis on listening to formal lectures,the module also recognises the importance ofcolloquial English in academic situations.

• Learning outcomes: You will learn how to identifythe structure of a formal lecture, recogniselanguage markers, select and use appropriatenote taking styles, recognise a range of languageregisters and be aware of a variety of Britishaccents.

Individual Writing Tutorials – ED005• Aims: You will have the opportunity to discussyour academic writing with a member of staff ofthe Centre for English and World Languages, whowill give you advice on the structure, coherenceand cohesion of your work. Individual sessionslast 20 minutes each.

• Learning outcomes: You will learn how to identifyorganisational and syntactical strengths andweaknesses in your writing and edit your ownwork.

DatesClasses and tutorials are held from Weeks 3-12 inthe Autumn Term and Weeks 15-24 in the SpringTerm.

Entry requirements The only entry requirement is to be a student whosefirst language is not English and registered at theUniversity of Kent.
