ning; and because the celestial bodies move in a circular course, and it is difficult

for our senses to define the point where the circle begins, do not believe that bod-

Without doubt the circle (I mean the plane figure described by a single line) is

beyond our perception, and it is impossible for us to find out where it begins or

where it ends; but we ought not on this account to believe it to be without a begin-

ning. Although we are not sensible of it, it really begins at some point where the

draughtsman has begun to draw it at a certain radius from the center. Thus seeing

that figures which move in a circle always return upon themselves, without for a

single instant interrupting the regularity of their course, do not vainly imagine to

yourselves that the world has neither beginning nor end. "For the fashion of this

world passeth away" and "Heaven and earth shall pass away." The dogmas of the

end, and of the renewing of the world, are announced beforehand in these short

words put at the head of the inspired history. "In the beginning God made." That

which was begun in time is condemned to come to an end in time. If there has

been a beginning do not doubt of the end. Of what use men are geometry--the cal-

culations of arithmetic--the study of solids and far-famed astronomy, this labori-

ous vanity, if those who pursue them imagine that this visible world is co-eternal

with the Creator of all things, with God Himself; if they attribute to this limited

world, which has a material body, the same glory as to the incomprehensible and

invisible nature; if they cannot conceive that a whole, of which the parts are sub-

ject to corruption and change, must of necessity end by itself submitting to the

fate of its parts? But they have become "vain in their imaginations and their fool-

ish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools."

Some have affirmed that heaven co-exists with God from all eternity; others that

it is God, Himself, without beginning or end, and the cause of the particular ar-

rangement of all things.

to make its revolution; these men, I say, have discovered all except one thing: the fact that God is the Creator of

the universe, and the just Judge who rewards all the actions of life according to their merit. They have not known

how to raise themselves to the idea of the consummation of all things, the consequence of the doctrine of judg-

ment, and to see that the world must change if souls pass from this life to a new life. In reality, as the nature of the

present life presents an affinity to this world, so in the future life our souls will enjoy a lot conformable to their

new condition. But they are so far from applying these truths that they do but laugh when we announce to them

the end of all things and the regeneration of the age. Since the beginning naturally precedes that which is derived

from it, the writer, of necessity, when speaking to us of things which had their origin in time, puts at the head of

his narrative these words--"In the beginning God created." (To be continued...)

The San Francisco affiliate of the Armenian International Women’s Associa-

tion (AIWA) invites you to celebrate its launch event Please save the evening of September 8, 2012, to meet AIWA’s San Francisco (SF)

executive committee and learn the latest developments and future plans of the affiliate in sup-

port of Armenian women. AIWA is a non-profit organization established in 1991 with a mis-

sion to promote and enrich the social, economic and personal advancement of Armenian wom-

en worldwide through educational and other community activities that unite Armenian women,

promote gender equity, and emphasize the Armenian cultural heritage. Without alignment to any political or

religious group, since its inception AIWA has been successful in bringing together creative women of various

generations, diverse in interests and academic backgrounds, to fulfill its mission. The SF affiliate was

launched in January of 2012 by young Armenian professional women from the Bay Area, who were very in-

spired after attending the annual AIWA conference in San Francisco in October 2011.

The launch event will be held at St. Vartan Armenian Church Hall in Oakland, California. The

time and program details will be circulated soon. Sponsors of the event will gain special recognition for

their businesses and organizations and are encouraged to contact AIWA SF President Gaiane Khachatrian at

Preparations are Underway for the 60th

Bazaar and Food Festival on

Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2012.

Building upon the positive momentum from last year’s event, we anticipate an even greater turnout.

Last year the bazaar committee requested your financial support beyond the traditional leg of lamb donation and the response was overwhelming. With your generosity, contributions to the 2011 Bazaar Wish List gener-ated over $7,500 which enabled the Bazaar Committee to purchase new additions to the bazaar including:

These additions, along with other factors, contributed to a successful bazaar weekend. Most food items were sold out, there was a 25% increase in bazaar attendance and 25% increase in overall net profits! Additionally, last year’s bazaar attracted an unprecedented number of guests from the Oakland/East Bay community. We anticipate even more this year!

Please review the available Wish List items listed below and send your tax deductible donations to the church office.

Ordination of Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash St. John Armenian Apostolic Church was the setting for yet another historical chapter in the life of the

Western Diocese. On Sunday, April 29, 2012, during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence Arch-

bishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America ordained

and consecrated Dn. Matthew Ash into the Sacred Order of the Priesthood, bringing the total number of priests

ordained and consecrated by Archbishop Derderdian thus far to 30. This was the first ordination in the Bay Area

since our beloved Father Mesrob Sarafian was ordained at St.

Vartan in 1984.

More than 400 people attended the ordination ceremony

in San Francisco. Assisting the celebrant at the holy altar were

Archpriest Fr. Sarkis Petoyan, Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan, Dioce-

san Priesthood-Candidates Dns. Hovnan Vardanyan and Guzh

Khachikyan, St. John Parish Council Chair Dn. Sarkis Kes-

tekyan and acolytes. Archpriest Fr. Kevork Arakelian, Arch-

priest Fr. Shahe Altounian and Rev. Fr. Avedis Abovian partici-

pated in the service. Attending the service were members and

friends of the Ash family, Diocesan Council Chair Armen Ham-

par with his wife Nora, Godfather Peter Abajian with his wife

Houry, civic and ecumenical leaders, and the faithful of St. John the Evangelist Armenian Apostolic Church of

San Francisco and other Bay Area churches.

Archpriest Fr. Arshag Khatchadourian, (the Priest who baptized Dn. Matthew Ash) led the kneeling candi-

date to the altar. After the confirmation of the candidate’s worthiness, the priests placed their hands on the shoul-

ders of Dn. Matthew. Led kneeling to the center of the bema, Dn. Matthew presented himself to the people by fac-

ing the congregation and in a gesture of assent to their will, he raised his hands. The culmination of the ceremony

took place as the Primate robed Dn. Matthew in Priestly vestments, anointed the priest and announced Dn. Mat-

thew’s new name – Fr. Mesrop. Holding his hands open, Fr. Mesrop received the chalice and paten from the Pri-

mate. According to tradition, the newly-ordained Fr. Mesrop blessed the people by saying Khaghaghootyoon ama-

netsoon (Peace unto all). At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Fr. Mesrop stood at the center of the chancel and

silently read Holy Scriptures. The faithful greeted him by kissing his freshly-anointed hands.

According to the traditions of the Armenian Church, the bishop selects the priesthood name of the newly

ordained. Surpazan chose the name Father Mesrop Ash because Deacon Ash made the decision to obtain his theo-

logical education at the Kevorkian Seminary and Theological University at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin,

Armenia, and by choice learned classical Armenian. Saint Mesrop Mashtoz created the Armenian alphabet, and

Surpazan felt this name best characterized Deacon Ash’s approach to his theological training.

Following the ordination, a formal celebratory banquet

organized by the Parish Council of St. John was held in recogni-

tion of the newly ordained priest. The official banquet was held at

the Hall of the Annunciation Greek Cathedral in San Francisco.

Ecumenical guests including Protopresbyter Alexis Limonczenko

of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Rev. Fr. Khoren

Habeshian, Rev. Nerses Balabanian, Rev. James Kizirian and

State Senator Joe Simitian were among the dignitaries who at-

tended the festive event.

Technology played a large role in the ordination as over-

flow attendees were able to view the service via live video feed

inside the church hall, and the entire service was streamed live on Ustream.com, allowing for even more faithful

around the world to participate. Shortly after the ordination, Father Mesrop Ash entered the 40 day seclusion peri-

od of fasting, mediation, prayer, and training according to the traditions of the Armenian Church and will return to

St. John to begin his ministry in early June. Father Mesrop Ash's first divine liturgy will be held on Sunday, June

3, 2012.

sented a floral wreath at the foot of the cross along with other Bay Area Armenian

youth organizations including AGBU and AYF. Tamar Tatoian was a speaker at

the event and the following is the speech she gave:

"As we gather together again to solemnly commemorate the Armenian

Genocide, we feel hope as a people. Though the Armenian people have suffered at

the hands of the Turkish throughout history and are discriminated against by them

to this day, I believe our loyalty to advocating for genocide recognition is a reflec-

tion of the strength of the Armenian people. A phoenix rising from the ashes, Ar-

menia perseveres with us, the diaspora, as its wings, encouraging it to fly despite

its troubles. I hope I can accurately speak for other Armenian youth when saying

that being Armenian is a significant and indispensable part of our identities, which is why organizations like

ACYO that allow us to be active in the Armenian community are so fundamental. Our history is also important

to the development of our Armenian identities, and though we may not have the ability to be as politically in-

fluential as some other countries, we have endless amounts of love and devotion to our beautiful culture, and

we will never allow our history to be overshadowed by denial."

were devoted to Sunday School, Armenian Church Youth Organization,

and the Western Diocese Summer Camp. As a young adult he began

transitioning to a leadership role within the life of the Church, and

found outlets for service in Lay Ministry with the youth. During this

time he developed skills which would later be of use in his ministry,

working with the Armenian Assembly of America and studying in the

field Organizational Communications. In 2005, with the support and

blessing of the Primate, His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, he was

accepted as a Candidate to the Priesthood for the Western Diocese and

subsequently served as Diocesan Youth Director for two years.

In 2006, he was ordained to the Order of the Diaconate by Abp. Derderian. In 2008, he married his dear

wife Ani, who has ardently supported him throughout their long journey to the Holy Priesthood. In 2009, with the

blessing of the Primate, Abp. Hovnan Derderian, and His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, he

began his studies at the Kevorkian Seminary and Theological University located at the Mother See of Holy Etch-

miadzin in Armenian. After graduating from his two year program and serving several months at the St. Gregory

the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan he returned to the Western Diocese where he was appointed as pastor of the

faithful of St. John Armenian Church in San Francisco.
