Tkaczuk scored two early goals and assisted on the win- ning goal after six minutes of play in the final period. * • New York had taken a 1«0 lead on a goal by rookie Juha Widing midway in the first pe- riod, but Ken Schinkel neutral- ized it two minutes later. Tkac- zuk put the Rangers back in front with an unassisted goal to climax another power play but again Schinkel tied the score. After five minutes of play in the second period the Penguins went ahead for the first time in the game on a goal by rookie Nick Haraburak on an assist from Val Fonteyne. Eagles Start 'New' Season In Griff Tilt Niagara University's u n- beaten basketball team starts a new season Saturday when it meets Little Three tormentor Canisius, the Eagles' Coach Frank Layden said Wednesday. "I've told the squad the 10 in a row is behind them," Layden said at a gathering of the M&T Sports Forum conducted by Taps Gallagher in the Buffalo Athletic Club. "The" new season starts against Canisius." Hasn't Won Yet Layden is looking for his first Little Three triumph as a coach, having gone 0-4 against the Griffins and St. Bona- venture last year, which was his first at Niagara. "We're healthy. I suppose I could say someone is sick or in- jured, but that wouldn't be the case. There'll be no excuses," he said. The Golden Griffins, 5-2 on the campaign, are hale and hearty and waiting for the re- newla, too, Coach Bob Mackin- non said. He also reported that a large number of seats still are for sale. It's doubtful if the seals are the Memorial Audi- torium, but there are some left. "We played poorly against Villanova last week, but I be- lieve we will bounce back against Niagara," he said. Despite Niagara's being un- defeated and nationally ranked, Layden views the Saturday night encounter as a tight affair. "The match-ups are even in most cases, so neither club will have any advantage there. It should be a close ball game," he said. Record Is Possible "New season" or no, the Eagles are in position to estab- lish a school record for most games won at the start of a season. They tied the 10-straight mark (set in the 1962-63 cam- paign> Dec. 30 when they downed Oklahoma City Univer- sity in the championship match of the All-College Tournament. The 1962-63 season, by the way, was the last winning year U4-4) for the lads from Mon- teagle Ridge. ~* Layden left immediately after the luncheon on a scouting trip to Philadelphia. Four teams the Eagles will play later in the year met Wednesday night, (La- Salle vs. Syracuse and etc. . . .) in the City of Brotherly Love. (XaSalle vs. Syracuse and Villanova vs. Fairfield) in the City of Brotherly Love. Former Griffs Honored Five former Canisius stand- outs were guests at the lunch- eon including player-then-coach Jack Collins; Joe Dudzik, a for- mer city councilman who was the first 7-footer in Western New York cage circles; Joe Cavanaugh. Tkaczuk Sets Pace As Rangers Win, 5-3

Frank Layden . . . discuss rivalry

PITTSBURGH (AP> - Two first period power play goals and key plays by Walt Tkaczuk, sparked the New York Rangers to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in a National Hockey League game Wednesday night.

Tkaczuk scored two early goals and assisted on the winning goal after six minutes of play in the final period.

• * • New York had taken a 1«0

lead on a goal by rookie Juha Widing midway in the first period, but Ken Schinkel neutralized it two minutes later. Tkaczuk put the Rangers back in front with an unassisted goal to climax another power play but again Schinkel tied the score.

After five minutes of play in the second period the Penguins went ahead for the first time in the game on a goal by rookie Nick Haraburak on an assist from Val Fonteyne.

Tkaczuk pulled the Rangers even six minutes later with a 35-foot shot that skipped off the goal post and. in the final peri-

Eagles Start 'New' Season In Griff Tilt

Niagara University's u n-beaten basketball team starts a new season Saturday when it meets Little Three tormentor Canisius, the Eagles' Coach Frank Layden said Wednesday.

"I've told the squad the 10 in a row is behind them," Layden said at a gathering of the M&T Sports Forum conducted by Taps Gallagher in the Buffalo Athletic Club.

"The" new season s t a r t s against Canisius." Hasn't Won Yet

Layden is looking for his first Little Three triumph as a coach, having gone 0-4 against the Griffins and St. Bona-venture last year, which was his first at Niagara.

"We're healthy. I suppose I could say someone is sick or injured, but that wouldn't be the case. There'll be no excuses," he said.

The Golden Griffins, 5-2 on the campaign, are hale and hearty and waiting for the re-newla, too, Coach Bob Mackin-non said.

He also reported that a large number of seats still are for sale. It's doubtful if the seals are the

Memorial Audi-torium, but there are some left.

"We played poorly against Villanova last week, but I believe we will bounce back against Niagara," he said.

Despite Niagara's being undefeated and nationally ranked, Layden views the Saturday night encounter as a tight affair.

"The match-ups are even in most cases, so neither club will have any advantage there. It should be a close ball game," he said. Record Is Possible

"New season" or no, the Eagles are in position to establish a school record for most games won at the start of a season. They tied the 10-straight mark (set in the 1962-63 cam-paign> Dec. 30 when they downed Oklahoma City University in the championship match of the All-College Tournament.

The 1962-63 season, by the way, was the last winning year U4-4) for the lads from Mon-teagle Ridge. ~*

Layden left immediately after the luncheon on a scouting trip to Philadelphia. Four teams the Eagles will play later in the year met Wednesday night, (La-Salle vs. Syracuse and etc. . . .) in the City of Brotherly Love.

(XaSalle vs. Syracuse and Villanova vs. Fairfield) in the City of Brotherly Love. Former Griffs Honored

Five former Canisius standouts were guests at the luncheon including player-then-coach Jack Collins; Joe Dudzik, a former city councilman who was the first 7-footer in Western New York cage circles; Joe Cavanaugh. Neil O'Donnell and Hank Nowak, the recently reelected county comptroller. ,

Former St, Bonaventure stars will be on the guest list at the Forum's next meeting Jan. 21.
