With study leader Osnat Lippa, you are invited to travel to the source of Impressionism – to the France of the 19th century in the locations where the artists painted. Starting in Giverny, you will be inspired by the world of Claude Monet as we tour his house and hear from the Director of the Claude Monet Foundation. Spend time in the open-air studio of the most famous painters as we tour Rouen which captivated Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley, and the Seine Valley villages frequented by the Impressionists. Spend three nights in charming seaside Honfleur to view the harbor scenes, the impressive cliffs of the Alabaster Coast, the covered market halls that were the subjects of so many favourite paintings. With a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from Hunter College in New York and Postgraduate studies in Digital Imaging and Animation from Metropolitan University, London, she has followed a dual path as an artist and an art educator. Wide travels and years spent living in New York, London, and Toronto have exposed Osnat to many of the world’s best art museums and enhanced the research of her carefully chosen topics. Her love of art combined with her experience as a working and exhibiting artist ensure this will be an engaging and insightful tour.

Head to The Musée des Beaux Arts, home to one of the most important collections of Impressionist works in France. Saturday, April 25: Transfer to HonfleurAfter breakfast, check out of your hotel and board your private coach to Honfleur. Our route this morning follows the Seine River; we’ll stop to admire the views in by the river and in the small riverside villages frequented by the Impressionists and stop for lunch in a local restaurant. Take a guided walk in Le Havre, “the Birthplace of Impressionism”. Claude Monet’s view of the busy harbor of Le Havre is one of several paintings that he made when visiting the city in 1874. Follow the footsteps of Monet and many other painters as you explore the city, listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Next head to the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux for a guided visit. MuMa is known for its late-19th and 20th-century collections, from the Impressionists to the Fauves.Overnight: Tulip Inn, Honfleur Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Sunday, April 26: HonfleurAfter breakfast, join the group for this morning’s presentation by your study leader. This morning enjoy a guided tour of Honfleur and learn how the city’s sites contributed to the birth of Impressionism. Wander around the famous Vieux Basin and up and down the alleys of the picturesque Sainte-Catherine district. On the heights, the former Saint-Siméon Inn, a refuge for impressionist painters, is now La Ferme Saint-Siméon, a pilgrimage site for artists. After lunch at leisure head to the Museum Eugene Boudin, named after Claude Monet’s mentor. Founded in 1868 by Alexandre Dubourg and Eugène Boudin, both from Honfleur, the Eugène Boudin Museum boasts a fine collection of 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures. Thursday, April 23: Arrive in Paris, transfer to RouenArrive at Paris Airport this morning, where you meet your study leader, your tour director, and participants. Board your coach and head to Giverny for a guided visit of Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s house and gardens as well as a welcome introduction from Hugues R. Gall, Director of the Foundation. Claude Monet lived for forty-three years, from 1883 to 1926, in his house in Giverny. With a passion for gardening as well as for colors, he conceived both his flower garden and water garden as true works of art. Walking through his house and gardens, you will feel the atmosphere which reigned at the home of the Master of Impressionism and marvel at the floral compositions and water lilies, his greatest sources of inspiration. Lunch at leisure in Giverny. This afternoon, enjoy a visit to the Musée des Impressionismes dedicated to the Impressionist movement in France and abroad. Explore the movement’s infancy and its aesthetic since the Second World War and into contemporary art. Friday, April 24: RouenAfter a typical French breakfast of pastries and coffee, join the group for this morning’s presentation by your study leader. After the presentation, enjoy a guided visit of the city of Rouen, capital of Normandy. The open-air studio of the most famous painters, Rouen and the Seine Valley will offer you an unforgettable Impressionist journey. Like Monet, you will be dazzled by its cathedral and the variations in its colors with changing light. Like Pissarro and Sisley, you will be captivated by the narrow streets charged with history, the magic of the river and the picturesque villages that line its banks. Apart from the splendor of its architecture, Rouen is renowned for many famous historic, literary, and artistic characters, including Joan of Arc, Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant and, of course, Claude Monet. Enjoy lunch in one of Rouen’s charming brasseries.

Monday, April 27: HonfleurAfter breakfast board your private coach for a sightseeing tour of the Côte d’Albatre, named after the impressive white cliffs that border this section of the English Channel. Such is the untamed beauty of the Alabaster Coast that it became one of the Impressionist painters’ favorite subjects during the 19th century. Stop in Fécamp, at the heart of the Pays de Caux, on the Albaster Coast. Enjoy a guided visit of The Palais Benedictine, an architectural masterpiece of gothic and Renaissance inspirations occupied by the Bénédictine liqueur distillery and an art museum. Enjoy lunch in a brasserie in picturesque Fécamp. After lunch, board your coach and head to Étretat and experience the particularly stunning Aval and Amont cliffs, dominated by the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel, that have inspired numerous painters. Étretat has also preserved all its historic charm with wooden covered market halls and belle-époque villas. Tuesday, April 28: Transfer to ParisAfter breakfast, join the group for this morning’s presentation by your study leader. After the presentation, meet your guide in the lobby and check out of your hotel. Board your private coach and head to Chateau of Auvers-sur-Oise for the “Impressionist Vision” experience. Plunge into the world of Impressionist painting with this immersive, emotional and sensory experience. Enjoy a walking tour of the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, Van Gogh’s final resting place. Lunch at one of Auvers-sur-Oise’s auberges. Board your coach to Neuilly-sur-Seine (40-min ride) and make a stop at Ile de La Jatte. As you wander through the island’s picturesque parks, you’ll see reproductions of ten emblematic paintings printed on panels, right where the artists set up their easels. “Sunday afternoon on the Grande Jatte” by the neo-impressionist Seurat, is on display at the beginning of the walk, right after Alexandre Nozal’s “L’embâcle de la Seine entre Asnières et Courbevoie.” Board your private coach and head to Paris.Overnight: Hotel Astoria, ParisMeals: Breakfast, Lunch

Wednesday, April 29: ParisAfter breakfast, join the group for this morning’s presentation by your study leader. Then head out by coach for a guided visit of the Musée de l’Orangerie dedicated to impressionist and post-impressionist paintings located in the west corner of the Tuileries Gardens next to the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The museum is most famous as the permanent home of eight large Water Lilies murals by Claude Monet, and also contains works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Rousseau, Alfred Sisley, and others. Enjoy lunch in one of Paris’s famed brasseries and explore the city at your own pace for the rest of the afternoon. Board your private coach and head to Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris’ 16th arrondissement for a guided visit. The museum features over three hundred Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet. It is the largest collection of his works. It also contains works by Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others. Explore the city at your own pace for the rest of the afternoon. Level of Activity: ModerateA good level of fitness is important for this trip. You must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and irregular paving and climbing stairs. You should be comfortable walking for about two hours at a stretch and standing in museums and galleries. AccommodationWe will be staying in comfortable hotels throughout the trip.
