P r e s i d e n t ’ s L e t t e rThe Rally

A rally or “run” as it is called in some circles has always been an important part of the motorcycle community. No matter what the size or location, the rally is usually a really great excuse to jump on your bike and go someplace, see old friends, meet new ones, and explore new roads and places. Faces and places as it were.

I’ve always found it interesting how the rally varies with the kind of bikes and riders that are attending the “mega” rallies like, Sturgis, Laconia, Daytona, etc. They are usually attended by cruiser jocks, A.K.A. the “loud crowd” usually in the 40 to 60 year old range, with facial hair and tattoos. These rallies are more about the party, the spectacle, hearing loss and buying black t-shirts then the actual riding and are attended by tens of thousands, sort of a pilgrimage to “Mecca.” I had a friend that returned from Sturgis wearing a t-shirt that said, “I rode mine to trailer week.” That sort of is my view as well.

Triumph Sprint and VFR riders, the sportier end of sport touring for another example, have smaller more intimate rallies attended by riders in their 20’s and mid 30’s and are newer to the rally experience. These rallies usually number under a 100 attendees; very few camp, or have a need for ear plugs.

The Concourse Owner’s Group, an older crowd of mostly sport touring riders, (similar to BMW riders), average 300 in attendance at the national rallies, less at the regionals, but always close to curvy roads. About 35% to 45% camp and “rally central” is usually based at a motel. The folks that pilot the big touring rigs don’t seem to camp, are denizens to pool-side motels, wear mostly polyester and choose athletic shoes over boots when riding.

Interesting...

The BMW National on the other hand is usually based around the facilities and the roads are a secondary consideration, primarily because of the attendance numbers. Beemer clubs have lots of satellite rallies scattered all over the country, and it seems more BMW riders camp and ride more than all the other groups of rally attendees. And, that brings us to our rally, the Top of The Rockies (TOR), which is very unique in many respects. Anyone that has attended many rallies knows that TOR rates right up there with the best. I’ve found that BMW pilots are some of the most interesting motorcyclists to be around and most are highly seasoned riders. There are always stories to be heard and told. The Paonia area offers very diverse riding on pavement or off that will suit anybody’s style, making it very desirable for folks that come for that diversion. Then there is rally central, the terrific town park for the folks that just want to hang out and bench race, have a beer and catch up with old friends. There is wine touring and nearby National Parks to experience. The scenery is magnificent and the weather mild. There’s not a whole bunch of crowds and noise like some rallies. There is even hiking and fishing for anyone so inclined, why last year we even did a ride and hike. You can ride all day, return, get a shower and snack, listen to music and party into the night. In short, there is something for everyone in an efficient package at one low price. After all the rallies I’ve been to, I believe if someone said to me the TOR was the last rally I could attend for the remainder of my riding career, I would not be unhappy. Maybe TOR should also be an acronym for Top Of The Rallies because that could not be construed as an idle boast. I hope to see you there this July. It will be a blast as always!
