Term 2 Week 10 2nd July 2020

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

As we come to the end of Term I would like to thank all families for supporting your children and the

school through the period of Remote Learning early in the term, as well as the Phase 1 return to school

and the successful transition to full time face to face learning for the past five weeks. Your patience with

adjusted school procedures around drop-off and pick up times, as well as communicating with the school

mostly online has been appreciated.

The entire school community has coped as well as can be expected in such challenging circumstances. I

would also like to acknowledge the teaching and administrative staff for their flexibility, innovation and

commitment throughout the term in supporting students and families whilst learning from home and back

at school, as well as maintaining communication channels with families through phone interviews, phone

calls and email responses.

Hopefully all members of our community will enjoy a relaxing and healthy break, ready to return to school

in Term 3 with more regularity as a number of additional school activities recommence. Keep an eye out

for an Enews communication from the school late in the second week of the holidays with any further

updates from the NSW Department of Education that may affect school operating procedures.

***The school is waiting for advice around the recommencement of excursions and camps.

As these activities recommence the following guidelines will apply:

all visitors and external to school providers must adhere to relevant hygiene, distancing and safety protocols

external providers and visitors are required to demonstrate compliance with health and safety requirements including adhering to strict guidelines and completing relevant forms

non-essential adults are still not permitted on school grounds or at school events – this includes

parents/carers unless specifically approved by the principal.

I would like to wish all community members well for the winter vacation break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 3. Students return on Tuesday July 21.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Over the final two weeks of term teachers have been completing the parent/teacher interview process that began late in Term 1. I appreciate the flexibility displayed by teachers and parents to enable the interviews to be conducted over the phone, given the current restrictions around adults on site. Early next term the school will be requesting feedback on the process to assist with future planning.

Semester 1 Reports

Tomorrow, Semester 1 Student Reports will be available through the Sentral Parent Portal. As the semester has been affected by COVID-related interruptions to learning, this report format will be modified from the usual A-E reporting process to a more simplified version for this semester. I would like to acknowledge the work of executive, teaching and administrative staff for completing the reporting process within the normal time frame despite the interruptions to normal face to face learning throughout the semester. Parents and carers requiring a printed copy of the student report should contact the office via phone or email. Parents and Carers wishing to discuss their child’s report are invited to contact the school early in Term 3 and teachers will be in contact to organise a phone meeting. The Band is Back!

We are excited to announce that Training Band and Performing Band practice and tutorials will recommence in Week 1 of Term 3, Thursday 23 July.

All band members will need to bring in their instruments and music on this day ready for band practice. Tutorial times and locations will remain the same as Term 1, please ensure students are supervised when not in band tutorials.

We trust that students have all been playing and practising their instruments at home, to help prepare them for the return of band please revise the following during the holidays: Training Band

During this fortnight, we have continued our Project Based Inquiry lessons and working in small groups, students are focussing on promoting the protection of an endangered animal or environment to the community. We learnt to use the Green Screens to film our information videos with the assistance of David and Lachlan from 5W. We look forward to sharing the results of these projects early in Term 3. In mathematics we have focused on time and revision of multiplication and division facts. We have also completed our third series of writing and peer feedback lessons with students producing some high quality and detailed information reports about an animal from Symbio Wildlife Park, where we will hopefully be visiting in Term 4. With the in-class support of Mr Lowe, we have continued on with our gardening projects and we have also planted some beans to experiment with growing plants under different conditions. Students have been documenting the progress of these plants and we have made some interesting discoveries about fertilizer and growing plants in a cupboard without access to sunlight. Our Week 9 and 10 assemblies were hosted by Year 3 SRC reps. Hopefully next term we can resume our 3-6 assembly; however, we have enjoyed giving the Stage 2 reps an opportunity to host an assembly.

That’s not a daffodil (Book Summary)

One cold winter day Mr Yilmaz went in to see Tom with a basket of apples.

He also had a gift for Tom it was a daffodil bulb. At first Tom planted the

bulb in a Terracotta pot but nothing happened. Also, they watered it and put

it in the sun. Next it started to grow it grew into a green beak. Then it grew

into a hand with five flat fingers. After that it looked like Grandad’s hair.

Finally, Tom told Mr Yilmaz to go into the backyard the bulb turned into a

daffodil.

The Rainbow Fish (Book Summary)

Firstly, there was a fish under the deep blue sea. Next so many fish

wanted to play with the rainbow fish but he would swim away. Then one

day a small fish followed the rainbow fish and said “can I have a lovely

scale?” But the rainbow fish would say no. Afterwards the little fish swam

away and told his friends so when the rainbow fish swam close to them

the little fish would hide away. The rainbow fish would swim sadly and he

came to a starfish he said “why is no one coming to me and playing?”

The starfish said “well if you go to the wise octopus he might help.” So,

the rainbow fish swam to the wise octopus and they had a little chat.

Finally, he said “I can’t.” but the octopus was gone and the blue fish came

back and said “can I please have just one little scale? Just one little

scale.” So, he pulled one little scale out and gave it to the fish. They

swam happily and the rainbow fish got surrounded by all of the fish and

he gave them all one. He has one more left and one fish said “come on

rainbow fish let’s play together.” They played together.

Sans Souci Public School Dojo Party (End of Term Reward)

Today at the year 5 and 6 dojo party 7 kids from each class in Stage 3 joined together in pairs and created Lego robots. We were given a choice of two robots to build. The first choice was a fitness coach, and the second choice was a rhino. The majority of the groups decided to build the rhino, but the ones who chose to build the coach would make it do sit ups or push ups. If you chose to make the rhino you would place it in an enclosed area and join with other groups to make a mini rhino battle. To make your robots move we would place a code in and have the robots repeat it. Lots of people enjoyed it and had fun coding and watching your codes play out, we would change the code to suit what we were doing. If your rhino loses a battle, change it so it will be able to fight again, if your coach wasn’t doing what you ask then change it so it does. In my opinion this was one of the best dojo party’s yet, and I believe that we should do a similar one again. It was really fun and everyone enjoyed their time building and coding their devices. Stage 3 News - The term ahead!

Stage 3 teachers are already in the process of planning for the delivery of several engaging learning tasks for their students. It will be a ‘step back in time’ with content for Yr. 5 covering Australia’s Colonial Era whilst Yr. 6 will be learning about Australian life during our Gold Rush Era. With our emphasis on technology integration for learning, Mrs Williamson has developed a virtual task for students using the Minecraft App to create a ‘gold rush’ town complete with miners, mine shafts and community amenities of the time. Mrs Ward has made a booking for our Yr. 5 students to visit the NSW State Library where students will engage in historical enquiry and learn about the struggles and triumphs of our great inland explorers. In late Term 3, Yr. 5 will also is undertaking their Interrelate lessons with important personal development content covering puberty and conflict resolution. Yr. 6 students are excitedly counting down the weeks now to Monday 7th September for their 3 day Bathurst Camp where they’ll be panning for gold and walking the paths of our infamous bushrangers! No doubt Mr. Hoff’s greatest joy will be a visit by the St George Dragons with players running a fitness session and encouraging students to lead healthy lifestyles. Lastly, we’ll be recommencing our homework program that will be streamlined across both grades supporting our students to manage their organisational skills and home revision of taught concepts. Bring on Term 3! Furthering flexible learning spaces in Stage 3

Recently we’ve had delivered several ottoman furniture pieces that have been placed along the bottom corridor of B Block. These are providing for our senior students another option for a learning space to collaborate with their peers in small groups to work on their BYOD class assignments. It really is a site to see students sprawled along the carpeted corridor monitoring their learning whilst engaged in group work creating videos, coding robots and using various iPad Apps to communicate their learning.
