Note from Pastor December 1 was the first Sunday of Advent and my birthday. For my birthday, I will fly out to Kansas City to celebrate my mother’s 98th birthday and watch the KC Chiefs play the Oakland Raiders. Go Mahomes. Advent is a time of new beginnings. It is a time to leave the past behind and take up a new Adventure. My mother is not feeling real adventurous this year. When I ask about her health she says: “not bad for the shape I am in.” For her birthday we plan to take her to the St. Olaf Christmas Concert and buffet. Lutheran college choirs are the best, and we hope that weather cooperates. I like
planning adventures for her, so she can live in anticipation. It surely has been an adventure to be with you these past five months. I am excited about where our journey will take us. The point of advent is to say you can start anew. Past sins are pushed to the side and people of humble origins like Mary and Joseph and John the Baptist can have a major impact on the world. John the Baptist called people to repentance, so they could let the past go and take on a new adventure. Joseph had a dream encouraging him to join the adventure of Mary and the child. Taking on the obligations of fatherhood would richly bless him. Mary put her future on the line, marveling at how a woman like her would be the handmaiden of God. These saints had questions along the way. John wondered if Jesus was really the one. He thought the Messiah would come with a larger initial impact. Jesus’ response is-- what God is all about is bringing healing and giving hope. Joseph fled with his family to Egypt in wonder at where God was leading him. Mary was concerned when Jesus was rejected by the religious leaders, but she was there on Pentecost to help give birth to her son’s church.

In the midst of the rush of Christmas, remember you, like Mary, Joseph and John are called to an Adventure. Leave the past behind if need be and join the journey with Jesus to bring healing and hope to those around you. It is not the easiest of roads always, but it’s full of the deepest of joys. You get to join the angels in singing “Glory to God in the Highest and Peace to His people on earth.” In our time together, we journey on as a sign to people who are looking for an adventure and a way to begin again. Grace and Peace, Pastor John Bunge We want to invite people to join us this December as a December to remember. Postcards to hand out or mail out are available in the narthex. Every Sunday of the Advent Season is an occasion for you to invite your friends and neighbors. December 8 – 10:00 AM We light the LOVE Candle, our service is followed by refreshments, and then we journey to carol to the Homebound. December 13 – Preschool Christmas Program @ 6:45 pm in the Fellowship Hall December 14 – Community Chorus of Redlands Christmas Concert here at Faith at 4 p.m. December 15 - We light the JOY Candle. And celebrate our joy after service with coffee hour. December 23 - We light the PEACE Candle and worship is followed by a Happy Birthday to Jesus party in the fellowship hall. December 24 - 7:00 PM Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with special music. December 29 – Worship of Carols and Readings followed by a potluck.

The results of the Stewardship drive resulted in a pledge increase of $12,000 for the upcoming year of 2020. With the positive response we had a lengthy discussion on a proposed 2020 budget. Several lone items of the proposed budget were increased: Christian Education, Maintenance Supplies, Copier Lease, Pastor’s – Salary, Advertising, Online Worship Planner. Several areas of the proposed budget were decreased, Utilities and Substitute Pastor Salaries. The Proposed Budget was presented to the congregation at the semi-annual congregational meeting on November 17, 2019. Property Management items that were discussed included the new microphones that are now in use, thank you to all who helped donate to this project, landscaping the planters with bark on November 16, 2019; taking a look at the church’s restroom toilet, and discussing the need for purchasing several generators in anticipation of power outages by So. Cal. Edison.
Respectfully Submitted, Vicky Rollins and Eloise Johnson
Outreach/Social Concerns Faith Lutheran Church Directory---Be sure you aren’t left out of the new directory which will be published soon! If you haven’t had your picture taken yet, be sure to see Jen Beal during an upcoming worship service—it’ll only take a couple of minutes. The directory will be online with members having a password to access it. The directory will not be open to public viewing due to privacy concerns. More information will follow. Coffee Hour—Be sure to thank Bonnie and Gerry Mills for their outstanding work coordinating our Coffee Hours for 2019! Also make sure you read a Thank-You Letter from Bonnie to the congregation included in this issue of The Voice. Pantry Update - For the month of December please bring cans or jars of spaghetti sauce!

Caroling to Shut-ins on Sunday, December 8 following worship! Be sure to put this on your calendar! More than 20 of us had a great time last year and you’ll feel good too! We’ll begin with lunch together at Bob’s Big Boy (even if you can’t carol with us, you may join us there!). Then we’ll visit those on our list for caroling and hopefully visit a care facility as we have in years past. Be sure you let
Steve or Sharon Cady know if you’ll be joining us. We’ll also encourage carpooling from the church parking lot and make sure there’s a navigator in each vehicle who can GPS to each site!
Community Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 14, 4 pm at Faith. Faith has hosted this event in the past. It is our custom as hosts to provide COOKIES or other easy-to-make handheld snacks for the choir members who will be performing. If you would be willing to provide homemade or purchased items, please make sure they are at the
church office by closing time on Friday, December 13—or better yet, show up a few minutes early on Saturday with some goodies and enjoy the program! Congregation/Pantry Christmas Celebration/Party-Sunday, December 22
following worship. The event will be similar to last year’s gathering. Activities will include a light meal---sandwiches, vegetable and fruit trays, deli salads, and cookies. Gifts will be handed out to all attending children who will also have a chance to
talk with Santa! There also will be craft and art tables for the kids to make projects. This will be an important event, so be sure to mark your calendars! Fifth Sunday Potluck on Sunday, December 29 following worship! This also goes on your calendar! This will be a regular potluck with no theme—You are encouraged to dig deep into your recipe archives and bring a specialty dish of your choice. You may also wish to bring copies of the recipe should you wish to share your culinary secrets! Faith 70th Anniversary Celebration—Again, read Bonnie’s letter. The event was a stupendous success. Be sure to offer your thanks to the Mills and all those who made the event work.

Dear Faith Family, As 2019 is winding down, I want to take this opportunity to thank you. Jerry and I have enjoyed hosting the coffee hour for 2019. We have spent several Saturdays baking up a storm, then enjoying watching you enjoy our creations. But we could not begin to do it ourselves. We had a lot of help! Thank you to Erwin and Lynda; Jennifer and Richard Beal; Carol Jensen; Sharon and Steve Cady; Joe and Jeanne Koenig; Ann and Michael Shay; Fred Mazurier; Norma Burwell; Pat and George Motschall; Pat Kilday; Connie Bunge; Eileen Johnson; the women of WELCA (Carol Jensen, Vicki Rollins, Karen Hall, Dona Whitt, Gerry Witwer, Diane Watson, and Glenda Kirker; who host one and sometimes two Coffee Hours every month). Thank You Everyone. And thank everyone who walked over to enjoy the Coffee Hour Hospitality. It truly would be no fun without you! Thank you to the people who made our 70th Anniversary a success. The Planning Committee was Vicki Rollins, Carol Jensen, Karen Hall and Norma Burwell, and I. In addition to other duties, Vicki made our room so beautiful with Norma's help; Carol organized the feast; Karen with Nelson's help, wrangled that beautiful cake into the hall. Also, Richard Beal cobbled together a system, so we could watch our new Faith DVD. (Robyn Blue chose the music which we still haven't enjoyed.) Erwin Buschauer and Jerry Mills put together a delightful wine tasting bar. And thank you to Pastor Bunge whose warm, welcoming personality pulled it all together. You are each such a blessing! And of course, thank you to everyone who brought a dish and/or attended. Without you there was no celebration. So, enjoy the holidays. Take time to regenerate. Because in 2020 we will start again!! God Bless You Everyone. -Bonnie Mills

Education Committee 1) Children’s Church will continue on Sundays, during the service, in the Prayground area of the Narthex. On 11/11/2019, a training session was held for Children’s Church teachers and volunteers. We have many new volunteers, who will work as teams. Jenny Beal is setting up a six-week rotation, with each team serving every sixth Sunday. Pastor John and Jenny ordered and received the teaching materials, a series called “Sparks” that matches the current liturgical cycle in the ELCA Lutheran Church.
2) Confirmation Classes, led by Pastor John, will resume 11/24/19, and after a two-week Christmas break, will resume again in January 2020, all on Sundays 11:30-12:15 pm. Currently, seven youths are attending this two-year program. The Confirmation ceremony will be in 2021.
3) Adult Classes, led by Pastor John, continue on Sundays from 9-9:45 am. Most Sundays, November through January, the lesson will focus on the Gospel of Matthew. On 12/8/19 and 12/15/19, Pastor John will lead a “Refresher” course on Martin Luther and Lutheranism offered for new members and seasoned member alike. There will be no Adult Sunday School 12/29/19. On Sunday, 1/5/19, Pacifica Bishop Andy Taylor will be at Faith Lutheran Church to help with baptisms, and he also will participate at that day’s Sunday School.
4) Adults and children: Please join in with these educational and enjoyable offerings!
Please submit your articles for The Voice by the 27th of the month to be included in the following month’s edition. You may email them to [email protected] or bring/mail them to the church office.

Worship and Music The Worship and Music Committee met on October 14th and was attended by Irmengard, Eloise, Michael and Pastor Bunge. Devotions were led by Michael Shea on the text of Zechariah 11:1-17 Most of the discussion centered on advent and Christmas Eve. There will be a Children’s Choir this year at the Christmas Eve service. The children will sing “Away in the Manger.” Also, Irmengard is endeavoring to pull together an adult choir made up of volunteers from the congregation and possibly several of her friends who may be willing to share their talent if they do not otherwise have a church. The rehearsal will be on the evening of the 18th of December. The Handbells will not perform until early in January. Irmengard is asking for 4 volunteers to serve as ushers for the upcoming concert by the Redlands Community Chorus on December 14th. The ushers are important and really needed. Invitations will be available in the form of cards which can be passed out to friends and acquaintances about Faith and especially our Christmas Eve Service. Be on the outlook for them. New Members will be received on December 22nd. The Committee is down to 2 members only – Michael and Eloise. Pastor and Irmengard are ex-officio. This is an important standing committee and we need to have at least 2 more members. Talk to Michael or Eloise if you are interested, or just come and join us at one of our meetings. We meet in the chapel for about one hour on the second Monday of the month at 7:30 pm. Beginning in January, the Committee will be chaired by Eloise, and the meeting day will switch back to the second Tuesday of the month. The meeting was adjourned with the Doxology. Respectfully Submitted, Michael Shea
