We resolve to do many things such as exercise more and eat less. Unfortunately, most resolutions only last three weeks or less because we don’t have the wherewithal or willpower to keep them. The first two weeks of the New Year we celebrate the “resolutions” God has made, but they are not just decisions, they are more like promises or contracts God has made for our benefit. We call them “covenants.” “Covenant” is a big word that lawyers and church folk throw around a lot. Lawyers use “covenant” when dealing with property. A covenant is a legal agreement between two or more parties. For example, a Homeowner’s Association may have a covenant that says that its members agree to not paint their houses neon pink . This so all the houses have a uniform appearance, which increases the property value of all the homes. We also use the word “covenant” at church to talk about the agreement between the people and God. The first biblical covenant is found where God promises to Abraham that God will make him and his descendants a great nation. The covenant extends to Moses as God makes a covenant with the people through the Law, or Torah, which includes the Ten Commandments. January 2015

The New Year brings talk about resolutions, which are firm decisions to do or not do something. Lawyers use “covenant” when dealing with

property. A covenant is a legal agreement between two or more parties. For example, a Homeowner’s Association may have a covenant that says that its members agree to not paint their houses neon pink . This so all the houses have a uniform appearance, which increases the property value of all the homes. Pastor’s Ed-itorial: Covenant Making

"This is the covenant I (God) will make with the people of Israel after that time, I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” – Jeremiah 31:33

(continued from page 1) God also makes a covenant with King David in 1 Samuel 7 that his ancestors “shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” Jesus makes a new covenant with his disciples when he offers himself up for the sins of the world. We are reminded of this covenant as we receive Communion and hear “This is my blood of the new covenant poured out for the forgiveness of sins.” The primary difference between the resolutions we make to ourselves and the covenant God makes with us is that God always follows through on God’s half of the deal. The story of the Old Testament is the continued perseverance of God’s love for his people and they continue to fall away, fall in love with other gods, and not keep their promise. Often when the Israelites complain that God is punishing them, it is more likely that they are suffering the consequences of their broken promises. Like when people disobey traffic laws and cause an accident, God is not punishing them for breaking the law. Rather, the accident is a consequence of them not obeying traffic laws. Whether it be breaking one of the 10 Commandments or speeding down Glencoe Church Loop, we always seem to know better than the authority. We can learn more about God’s covenants with us that God continues to make and we continue to break during worship and Bible Study the first few weeks of the New Year. I encourage all of you to attend our new study on Tuesdays at 6:30, “Invitation to the Old Testament,” which, as the title infers, invites you to read the Hebrew Scriptures with scholarly insight and sharing your own reflections with your peers. Also, on January 11, we will celebrate the covenant God made with Jesus and with us when God said, “You are my child, beloved, with you I am well pleased.” We may continue to break our promises, but God always keeps His! See you Sunday!
