Wow!! Where has the time gone??? It is hard to believe that since my last message to you, we have had two excellent regional tournaments, and we are getting ready for the Daytona Beach Regional

First, we had our Regional in Jacksonville. The hospitality and organization was outstanding. The attendance, especially for the newcomers, was excellent. It appears that the District 9 voucher program designed to bring new players into the tournament arena, has been met with remarkable success. We had many vouchers redeemed and large beginner games. It is good to see that the innovative programs we are instituting seem to have such a positive effect. Next we had our annual Naples Regional tournament. Once again, we had a great turnout and great hospitality. Thanks for supporting your regional tournaments.

I am pleased to announce that Bruce Greenspan has offered to present a course for beginner players, which will consist of a lecture, followed by a game at the new District 9 tournament, hosted by Unit 128 to honor Jayne Thomas. This will be a very relaxed and fun game. I urge you to let your friends know about it. It will be held on Saturday, December 15. Check the published tournament ad for the scheduled time and place.

This program is just one of the tools we are using to attract newer players, and I mention it because of all the hard work that OUR volunteers do to give back to the game that we love so much. It is hard to believe that so many people give of their time to organize and run the tournaments. So, for all of the dedicated volunteers we have, I want to give you my sincere thanks.

I hope to see you at the table.

Important Reminder to All Club Directors and Managers: You only have November and December to hold GNT Fund Raiser Games in 2012.

Every Club may hold one Fund Raiser Game per year for each sanctioned session. These games offer a full 100% sectional rating, but a player must be an ACBL member or join at the event (e.g, if you have 10 games a week, you can hold 10 GNT Fund Raiser games any time during the year at the time of an already sanctioned session). The game report and $4 per table should be mailed to me as Treasurer of District 9 – P. O. Box 1534, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32004

It is a pleasure to report that the Jacksonville Regional had 1400 tables…200 more than budgeted. My compliments to the many volunteers who made the tournament so enjoyable and a tremendous success with all the players. There were too many volunteers to list the names but those of you who were there appreciated their time and devotion to this week long event. A special surprise and favorite with all, was a “Warm Welcome to the Jacksonville Regional” in the form of a hot chocolate chip cookie.

Very Good News: Some of our part time residents and members of District 9 are returning to Florida. The number of members as of August 30, 2012 was 18,583…up from a year ago. We are looking forward to reaching our goal of 20,000 in early 2013.

Please mark your calendar to attend another new District 9 Regional. The Tampa Regional is coming up December 10-16 at the Embassy Suites Hotel at University of South Florida/Busch Gardens. This will be a very special Regional since it has been named in honor of our long time friend and Executive Manager-Unit 128, Jayne Thomas, who passed away earlier this year.

I hope to see many of you at the San Francisco NABC starting on Thanksgiving Day. This is a favorite tournament for many of our members. As a member of the ACBL Finance Committee, I will arrive a week earlier to work on a budget for 2013 and participate in other National board meetings.

Never Give Up!Declarer Play at the Nationals in Philadelphia What a thrill to play against Bob Hamman and his partner in a two session pairs game at the Nationals in Philadelphia in July. And also to face Zeke Jabbour and his partner in that same event. Here’s a hand against Bob Hamman and his partner:

♠ K95♥ Q84♦ K3♣ AJ873

♠ J1064 ♠ AQ7 ♥ 63 ♥ 1075♦ 10875 ♦ Q J96♣ K64 ♣ Q52

♠ 832♥ AKJ92♦ A42♣ 109

You are South, declaring 4♥, and Bob leads the ♠J. The opponents take three spades and switch to a trump. Winning with your Ace, you lead the ♣10 in tempo, Bob playing the King and you take your Ace, and continue in tempo with a small club, and East has a problem. He hesitates and then plays a small club, and you win the 9 – making 4 hearts! This shouldn’t have worked. As Bob said after the session, East should play the Queen, because if declarer had a singleton and ruffs, then the Queen would have popped up anyway on the next round. But admit it – before drawing trump, would you have thought of playing the ♣10 and then the low club? I wouldn’t have – I would have just given up. This hand contributed to coming in first in our stratum. Declarer was Carol Dellandrea, of North Bay Ontario and Palm Harbor Florida, a member of the Clearwater DBC.

Shirley: This is board 13 from the Gator Bridge Club, Gainesville, May 1, 2012. It was extracted from the ACBL Olympiad Fund Game of October 19, 2011. District 9 writer and player, Brian Gunnell did the analysis of the hand records. Also see his excellent analyses at Wednesdaygame.com for hundreds of sessions. For each of the numbered calls 1-7 in the auction, do you agree or disagree with the call? How should the hand best be played in 3NT by North (EW silent) against (A) the ♥K opening lead with West playing the Q on it and (B) the ♠5 opening lead? This is single dummy, so we are talking about the best percentage plays.

Bidding Solutions1. No error. Some pre-

fer to bid 2♣ to set up a game force, but 1♠ is perfectly correct.

2. No error. Personally, I like an ag-gressive 2♥ overcall (down only 500 against a vulnerable game if doubled). The likely final contract is 3NT by North, and a ♥ lead would be essential to the defense.

3. Error North: The clear-cut call over 1♠ is 1NT. A 2♦ rebid over partner’s 1♠ should be avoided on a 5 card suit, unless your shape is specifically 1-4-5-3 or rarely 3-4-5-1 with powerful ♦s and terrible ♠s. The 1NT call leads to more stealthy bidding.

4. Error North: Over 3♣, 3NT is the ob-vious call. Even if South had bid 3NT over 3♥, with or without the double of 3♥, the unfavorable ♥ lead becomes marked.

5. No error: East’s double of 3♥ is close, but acceptable.

6. No error: It is very close between 3NT and 4♦ by South. The 3♥ call is just a stopper, perhaps ♥-Kxx, so 3NT is scary. Pass or redouble would suggest playing 3♥, an unthinkable idea.

7. Error North: Over 4♦, the proper call is 4NT, not 5♦. This is not Keycard, due to the limited point count of 2♦. Let South decide.

The Play in 3NTA. After winning the second ♥, play a ♦

to the K, a ♦ to the A, and then three top ♣s. If the ♣J falls, you will make at least 4NT. If the ♣J does not fall, but ♣s are distributed 4-3 as usually expected, you can run the last three ♦s (bringing you to nine tricks), and if the ♠A is onside you get a 10th. Gunnell’s line sees him running 5♦s, playing the ♣Q and finessing the ♣10. As he humorously notes, this requires a sympathetic partner if the ♣J is off. He makes 4NT. His reasoning is that we presume East had exactly 2♥ and 2♦, and therefore 9 of the 14 Black cards. So, as Dolly says, it is 9 to 5. He notes 3NT is the standard contract, so the risk is worthwhile. The recommended line never risks the contract, and has two bites of the 9-5 apple on most hands. If the ♣J fails to drop, you still make your overtrick if the ♠A is onside with ♣s 4-3. This secondary shot becomes 6-2 in your favor if indeed the ♣s are 4-3 with the J still outstanding. You never risk your contract, and have a better chance than Gunnell’s line to get your overtrick. On this day, his line wins (10 tricks) and our line loses (9 tricks). On a great day, we might even make 5NT on the recommended line, but not on Gunnell’s line, as he can never lead a ♠ to the K!

B. You should go up with the ♠K at trick one. When and if you lose this trick, the opponents will switch to ♥s. This is your best chance to win a ♠ trick. The West holdings for ♠s above the 5 (4th

best), where the ♠K is wrong, are ♠-A6 and ♠-A7  (2). The holdings where the ♠K is right are ♠-Q J, ♠-Q7,♠-J7, ♠-Q6, ♠-J6(5). Now you have a decision when the ♥Q is returned. You need to put up the A. If you duck, West might overtake, and cash 2♠ to hold you to 3NT. Things seem to be going very badly at this point, and the field will be dropping the ♣J if it falls doubleton or tripleton, or a ♣ might have been led at trick one at other tables. So here, I would agree with Gunnell to risk the contract with a ♣ finesse to catch up. Actual NS results: +660 (♠5 lead, low from dummy=error to West’s Ace. Heart Q ducked and later East was squeezed in the black suits) (1 time), +630 (5 times), +600 (one time), and -200 in 5♦ (one time).

Lessons(1) On offense, make the most pragmat-ic bids, giving out as little information as possible. But on defense, it is often “Wright” to overcall aggressively to help partner and to push the opposition to a higher level. After both opponents had bid, West is in a defensive mode where overcalls are just competitive, not trying for game. (2) You often get second chanc-es to recover from your errors. North had two chances to recover from ill-advised bids. (3) At matchpoints, if your oppo-nents have defended well or you have misjudged in a standard contract, you need to do something different from the competition to catch up. Thanks to Brian Gunnell for his in-put into this article.

When you direct as frequently as I do (I'm guessing that I've directed about 4,000 sessions in the last 17 years), players will frequently ask me to comment on a ruling that was made by another director--perhaps a club director or sometimes a colleague on the tournament directing staff.

I'm more than happy to quote general guidelines involving the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, but I'm very reluctant to comment directly on someone else's ruling. The reason for this, of course, is that when someone asks me a ruling, they are presenting me with information from their perspective only. When I make a ruling, I go to the table and I can gather information from four people and two opposing sides. And, no matter how fair someone tries to be in giving me information, there simply is no substitute for gathering that information myself.

Some of the most common confusion revolves around when a card becomes played. I often get declarers who call me over to tell me that they saw a defender's card and therefore defender is now required to play that card. The Laws, however, state that a card is played by a defender when it is held in a position where his partner would be able to see its face. So, just because

declarer saw it doesn't mean that it has to be played.

A similar situation occurs with bidding. A bid is considered made when the bidding card is held faced, touching or nearly touching the table, or held in a position to indicate that the call has been made. The fact that someone took a card out of the bid box and then switched it to something else does not make it a bid. It is unauthorized information to the partner of the bidder, but it is not a bid.

Bids or calls (a call is an action such as Pass, Double, or Redouble) out of turn also can be a source of confusion. The application of the Laws are different depending upon whether the infraction occurred before partner was scheduled to bid, or whether the partner of the violator is to bid subsequently. Here's an illustration. South is the dealer, but West opens 1NT out of turn. North is offered the opportunity to accept the bid out of turn, refuses to do so, and reverts the bidding back to South, who passes. West now repeats the 1NT call. East is free to choose any action--he's learned that his partner has a 1NT opening bid in the proper rotation. He has gained no extra information from the infraction.

Now, let's change the dealer to North. West opens 1NT out of turn. North refuses

That's Not How The Other Director Ruled!!by Harry Falk • [email protected]

Harry Falk's web site is harrybridge.com it contains information about the local duplicates in his area as well as tournaments at which he officiates.

to accept, so the bid is reverted back to North. However, this time, East knows well in advance of when he is supposed to know that partner has a balanced 15-17. This information changes everything, so now East is barred from the entire auction to prevent him from using that knowledge to his side's advantage.

The revoke law frequently causes confusion. The Law states that if the revoking player (not the revoking side) wins the trick on which the revoke occurred (and, of course, the only way for that to occur is for the revoke to trump) and their side wins a subsequent trick, two tricks are transferred to the non-offenders. If the revoker did not win the trick, but his side won that trick or a subsequent trick, one trick is transferred. The director can transfer additional tricks if the penalties listed above do not restore equity (the likely result had the revoke not occurred). This Law was updated about five years ago, but I know that there are club directors out there who are still applying the old Law. Club directors--make sure that you have the most current Law Book and that you read through it.

As always, you are free to e-mail me questions about events and rulings--but if I hedge on giving you a direct answer, it's really not fair to question someone else's judgment without hearing both sides of the case. SBNx

Welcome to the busy part of the bridge calendar! We have just finished our first 0-500 NLM Tournament, jointly sponsored by the In-Between and Unit 102. It was a huge success with 93 tables in play. Results and details will appear in the next issue of SBN and on the Unit website (unit102.com). Also, we participated in a wonderful series of STaC games with other Florida Units. We hope you enjoyed the $1-off coupons suggested by Sandra Fleischman and Sheila Pies. Both events were well planned and executed, and I believe contributed to the enjoyment of our membership. Special thanks to those who made these events happen.

Our Fall Sectional is coming up November 15–18 at the In-Between Club. Please line up your partners and make plans to attend. Co-Chairs Cynthia Murphy and Jack Hawes have been working very diligently to get things ready.

The January Sectional, chaired by Sandy Lewis, will be held at the Sahib Shrine Temple January 17–20. Again, I urge you to plan on attending to support the Unit’s efforts to provide you with great local bridge.

You will see in the following pages of this issue that we are holding our elections for the Board of Directors in January. We have a large slate of candidates who have come forward to volunteer to serve. Besides being able to vote at the January Sectional, we have added absentee ballots to be available on the Unit website and at the local clubs. Please exercise your right and privilege to vote, either in person or by absentee ballot.

Please remember to be pleasant and friendly at the bridge table. There is no reason for anyone to be treated rudely by any other bridge player. We are all playing a GAME that we enjoy, and shouldn’t come away from the experience with bad feelings caused by our partners or fellow competitors. And be kind to yourselves! Bridge can be very frustrating, but try to look on it as a learning opportunity. It’s good exercise for your brain.

UNIT BOARD JOTTINGS The Unit 102 Awards Luncheon and Swiss Teams will be held on February 24, 2013 at the Misty Creek Country Club, 8954 Misty Creek Drive. Cynthia Murphy and Doris Linton were appointed to work with Michelle Golden planning the Non-Life Masters Silver Sectional, October 6-7, at the In-Between. The Board budgeted $500 to support the Non-Life Masters program for the remainder of 2012 exclusive of the sectional. A motion was passed to raise the upper masterpoint limit for Non-Life Master events from 299 to 500, consistent with the new requirement for the rank of life master. Details regarding the stratification of events will be forthcoming. The changes will take effect at the January sectional. Iris Wilson audited the Unit’s books and rendered a clean opinion on the financials. A motion was passed to change the name of the annual Charity Swiss Teams to the Anniversary Swiss Teams. Sandra Fleischman and Jim Russell were designated to investigate ways to increase charitable contributions. One suggestion was to raffle off top A players for club games subsequent to the event. Sandra Fleischman reported that the Unit 102 web site (www.unit102.com) has received 11,000 hits since January 2011. Make sure to check the site periodically as a wealth of information can be found there. A search will commence for a publicity chairperson to promote greater attendance at unit events, sectionals, and regionals. The May 2013 sectional will be held at the Pine Shores Community Center. The one-time $1.00 coupons for the October STaC week games will be available at clubs and at the game sites. A committee comprised of Sandra Fleischman, Sandy Lewis, Cynthia Murphy, and Sheila Pies was thanked for its work on revising the Unit’s free-play policy for voluntary service to the bridge community. Jim Russell spoke to the great need for volunteers for the Youth Bridge Program. If able to help, please call Jim at 592-8117 or email him at [email protected].
