We have a clear mission that comes from the Great Commission of Jesus (Co-Mission: Christ’s mission that we accomplish together) in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples….” A disciple is one who is learning to become like their master. Our Master is Jesus Christ. Therefore, our mission is to produce spiritually mature followers of Jesus Christ. At Church of the Open Door we put it like this: Leading People in the Adventure of Becoming Like Christ.

Becoming Like ChristBecause our mission is to Lead People in the Adventure of Becoming Like Christ, the next question we want to ask is, “What does it look like to be like Christ?”

We have studied the Scriptures for the core characteristics of Christ’s earthly life and we have summarized them under six distinctives. Together, they form the acronym C.H.R.I.S.T. and help us clarify what it means to live “like Christ.”

Our goal is nothing less than a community of fully devoted and fully developed Christ-followers; people whose lives reflect accurately the life of Jesus Christ while He was on earth. This is what it means to be the church: the body of Christ here and now.www.opendoor.tv/about-us/our-mission

Coach 2 Connect (C2C) exists to encourage people just like you to find out where you best fit to serve here at Open Door. You may not think that there is a place of service for you, but there is. No matter what abilities or skills you possess or don’t possess, your desire to volunteer can be channeled. That’s where Coach 2 Connect comes in. Our coaches want to help you figure out your best place to serve and encourage you on that journey.

We believe that the biggest hindrance to our spiritual growth is standing by and watching instead of jumping in and serving. It’s in serving that you discover the heart of a Savior who came to serve. It’s in serving that you find you can do things you never thought you would be able to. It’s in serving that your heart expands and your relationships with others grow. We can’t wait to help you find your serving sweet spot!

So, reach out to a C2C Connections coach today! Here’s how:

a. Write Coach 2 Connect on the back of your connection card.b. Text C2C and your name to 440-678-8775c. Go to www.opendoor.tv/C2Cd. Call the church at 440-323-4644

A few years ago, our Missions Director met with Elyria’s mayor and asked about the city’s greatest needs. As a result of this meeting, we were made aware of many needs, but there was one in particular that stuck out to us: the lack of a local family shelter. Out of this need, the idea for Generation House was born and became an important part of the 20/20 Vision.

The Generation House is well under way. We’ve identified a planning team and a location. Generation House will have a very specific identity: a place designed for homeless families in transition and will take the best practices of family shelter models and incorporate Open Door’s DNA of relational discipleship and excellence, enabling us to reach whole families for Christ. These families will be treated with dignity, and we will work hard to connect them with local resources and with our church.

Stay tuned as the 20/20 Vision continues to unfold, and as the Generation House soon begins to have a powerful impact meeting a very real need in our community. Praise the Lord!

Do you give faithfully to global missions with your time, money, and prayers? Do you ever wonder what specific projects your gifts are funding and your prayers are fueling? Are you curious about what exactly is being made possible through your generosity? Well, here’s an update on some really awesome projects happening right now in El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.

In October of this past year, our Missions Department was a part of creating an English Academy in La Libertad, El Salvador, in connection with the Iglesia Gran Comision (Great Commission Church) that we support there. This English Academy, as well as other programs currently being offered such as carpentry, sewing, and computer classes, are excellent models of something called a “community connection program.” The goal with programs like these is to meet a need or offer a practical life skill as well as offer the opportunity for spiritual transformation. We give these people the opportunity to change their physical situation, while also teaching them about the person of Jesus Christ and how he can change their entire situation, their entire life.

Currently, 45 young men and women, ages 13-15, are attending and in January of this year, 9 of them decided to check out the youth group at the church. One of them accepted Christ on that first visit, and the others have continued to attend. Praise the Lord!

Programs just like these are beginning soon at Kefalé in the Dominican Republic as well! Sugeili, Pastor Tito’s wife and the Director of Connections for the DR Campus, has been making plans for both English and computer classes to begin at the church this Spring. Be praying for her and for the campus there, that God will continue to work through them and through these new classes!

On Christmas Day 2016, the DR Campus celebrated the Grand Opening of their new building, which we were able to purchase as a part of the 20/20 Vision Campaign. (If you missed the story, check out this blog post: opendoor.tv/christmas-adventure.) Since then, they have experienced tre-mendous growth, recently reporting a need of more chairs because their services have been so full! Just like we do here in the States, the DR Campus also has two services. Lately, their first service has had 25-30 people, and their second service has had over 60 people. Hallelujah!

Isn’t it incredible to see the ways that God is moving all over the world? And to see the ways that he’s working through us to carry out His work far beyond even our own communities? So keep doing what you’re doing church, leading people in the adventure of becoming like Christ, Lorain County and beyond.

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone

for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
