President’s Corner: Peralta Accountability for Student Success In recent years, the Peralta Accountability for Student Success (PASS) program has enabled CoA to develop innovative programs and strengthen or expand existing programs. The PASS program provides funding in three specific areas of impact designated by Measure B: 1. Protect and maintain core academic programs including math, science, and English; 2. Train students for successful careers; and 3. Prepare students for transfer to four-year universities. Last academic year PASS funds were used to support a number of innovative initiatives, including CoA’s Community Change and Urban Leadership (CCUL) project, embedding a librarian in core courses requiring research and writing, the New D.R.E.A.M. program (formerly known as Open Gate), and a series of new employment development activities designed to help our students transition to work. I would like to hear your opinions about the PASS program and the way it was administered here at CoA. The District has developed an anonymous survey about PASS that I hope you will participate in. Your candid responses will help us improve the administration of PASS and similar initiatives in the future. A link to the survey is available online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PASSopinion and you will receive an email with the information as well. Thank you in advance for your participation. President’s Corner: Peralta Accountability for Student Success In recent years, the Peralta Accountability for Student Success (PASS) program has enabled CoA to develop innovative programs and strengthen or expand existing programs. The PASS program provides funding in three specific areas of impact designated by Measure B:

1. Protect and maintain core academic programs including math, science, and English; 2. Train students for successful careers; and 3. Prepare students for transfer to four-year universities.

Last academic year PASS funds were used to support a number of innovative initiatives, including CoA’s Community Change and Urban Leadership (CCUL) project, embedding a librarian in core courses requiring research and writing, the

New D.R.E.A.M. program (formerly known as Open Gate), and a series of new employment development activities designed to help our students transition to work.

CoA Outreach Team Connecting With the Community

College of Alameda’s Outreach Department team members have had a busy start to this fall semester, focusing on reconnecting with our high school and community partners. As part of the effort to “welcome back” our partners this fall, the team has been hosting CoA Breakfasts at partner sites, including Island High School and Oakland High School. These breakfasts provide opportunities for high school teachers, counselors, and community partners to meet CoA Outreach Specialist Ashley Flores and begin planning for the fall semester.

Our high school partners enthusiastically invited the CoA Outreach Team to participate in a variety of events and activities, including Parent Nights, Community College

Fairs, special presentations, and panel discussions. Team members Martinet Phan and Julio Bautista also attended the Heart 2 Heart Job & Education Fair in Berkeley, and Oktober Fest in Oaklands’s Diamond District. Many participants at these events expressed interest in our Career Technical Education (CTE), transfer, and associate degree programs.

More recently, Flores and Phan gave a special presentation to 100 juniors and seniors at Royal Sunset High School in Hayward. The interactive presentation highlighted the many benefits of attending community college, including CoA’s degrees, certificates, transfer options, clubs, sports, and special programs. This was a great opportunity for Royal Sunset High School to learn firsthand about all the great programs and services that CoA has to offer! Past Events: • CoA Breakfast • UC Berkeley Center for Educational Partnerships

Collaboration Meeting • Royal Sunset School Presentation • Oktober Fest • Heart 2 Heart Job & Education Fair • San Leandro College Night (San Leandro High School) • Oakland Unified College Night (Oakland Technical High

School) Upcoming Events: • Oct 13th San Lorenzo Unified College Night (San

Lorenzo High School) • Oct 19th Hayward High Career Fair

CoA Students Have A Close Look at Fleet Week’s Blue Angels

San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) is a popular annual event, attracting millions to the Bay Area every year. Fleet week features a number of fun and educational activities, culminating in breathtaking aeronautics demonstrations by the renown U.S. Navy Blue Angels expert flying team. Last week, as part of this year’s Fleet Week celebration, CoA Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) students were invited to meet the Blue Angels in person and get a close look at the new Fighter Jet F22 Raptor. This special presentation was lead by U. S. Air Force Raptor pilots and their crew chief.

Our students enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to interact with these highly trained professionals and ask technical questions about the aircraft. Students also were able to see first-hand the cutting edge technology on board the state-of-the-art Fighter Jet F22 Raptor. Needless to say, our students were both inspired and motivated by the presentation and we thank Fleet Week organizers, and the U. S. Navy and the Air Force for generously providing our students with this remarkable experience. Alameda Chamber of Commerce 2016 Business Expo at CoA College of Alameda will host the Alameda Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Business Expo, Tuesday, October 18, 2016, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the CoA Gymnasium. Alameda businesses and residents have waited over two years for the return of the Alameda Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, making it one of the most anticipated events ever held in Alameda. The added Business Education Conference promises to make it well worth the wait. Attendees will have the opportunity to browse through scores of business exhibits, attend an array of small business workshops, find job opportunities and view main stage programs not found at any other business event.

For the first time in Alameda’s history, the 2016 Business Expo will feature Small Business Association Workshops such as “Free and Low-Cost Resources for Small Business” and “How to Access SBA Capital”. The Chamber will offer additional workshops including “Understanding the New Employee Overtime Law” and “The 5 Numbers Every Business Owner Should Know”.

The main stage will feature a Think Tank Panel similar to the popular television series, Shark Tank, and a keynote presentation by Dennis Erokan, founder of BAM Magazine, the BAMMY Awards and past President of the Alliance of Chief Executives. An abundance of business exhibits including, but not limited to, home health care, technology, home security, marketing and financial services will be available to serve your home and business needs.
