Working at anairport is special, and this is markedly apparent during holidays. We offer our bestwishes for safe and happy travels this holiday season and in the year to come.
Let there be light! The Hotel and Transit Center moved one step closer to installing one of the threepublic art pieces chosen for the complex when a representative from Yann Kersalé’sParis AIK Studio was in Denver to test and position lights within the commuter trainhall and its canopy and the center’s large steel and glass canopy over the new plaza.
Kersalé, who has created light installations around the world, developed a piece forthe HTC titled L’eau dans Tous Ses États (Water in All Its States.) In this piece, heexplores the relationships between water’s different states—liquid, solid and gas—andits interaction with fragmented light.
Crews with HTC’s construction tri-venture Mortensen, Hunt and Saunders powered upthe lights for a late evening test. Now each of the light nodes, which are mountedon the train station canopy grid has a beautiful soft glow. Kersalé wants the lights toevoke a light snowfall, and is programming them to shift from warm light to coollight as the commuter trains arrive and depart.
The canopy lighting is part of Kersalé’s overall public art project, which also includesa light-projection-based installation in the corridor for escalators that movepassengers between the train station (Level 1) and the plaza and terminal (Level 5).The escalator walls will be transformed with crystalline forms and mirrored facets;fabrication is underway and installation will begin in late January 2015.

Public Wi-Fi Infrastructure at Airport UpgradedDenver International Airport recently completed an upgrade to the public Wi-Fiinfrastructure that serves the concourses. The effort included a $1 million upgrade ofthe wireless access points, antennas, controllers and switches to new, state-of-the-art Wi-Fi technology.
DEN has offered Wi-Fi since 2007 and the demand for it has grown exponentially.
This upgrade increases the capacity of the Wi-Fi infrastructure, while reducing

congestion on access points in concourse locations with heavy passenger traffic. DENhas increased the access points to afford consistent signal coverage throughout thepublic areas of each concourse, and extra attention was paid to their center cores, subcores, and train platform areas, which lacked proper coverage. The newarchitecture and technologies deployed ensure strong, scalable public Wi-Fi with theability to meet growing demand.
The improvements have not gone unnoticed. The Feb. 10, 2014, issue of Forbesranked Denver International Airport as one of the best airports, out of America’s top15-busiest airports, for Wi-Fi consistency and capacity.

Open Windows, located near Gate B51 (east side of Concourse B), combines 128custom fabricated LED rings of light and a 3-D motion-detection camera to create an11-foot-tall interactive tower of lights that react to a person's movement. Theinstallation can be programmed with games and other experiences to changepassenger interactions over time so that no two visits are the same.
"We wanted to find a way to create an installation in which travelers could play, enjoy and engage in a unique way that they wouldn't find at other airports," saidJohn Ackerman, DEN's chief commercial officer. "Open Windows was designed as anexperiment to see how we can enhance the airport through innovative uses oftechnology, art and other mediums."
"Open Windows" is an interactive light experience that engages users with motion and soundcontrollers. It is located at B Gates, in the east wing.
Open Windows was developed using open source hardware and software, andcontains more than 2,000 feet of wires, 7,680 individual LED lights, two computersand 1,400 pounds of steel. The motion tracking sensors respond to depth, skeletaltracking and sound.
