TOOT, TOOT, CHUF, CHUF, DINE & DANCEAt last, the long awaited evening organised by good friend Bob Bass arrived when twenty ardent dancers and friends from Melbourne met at the Belgrave Station to board the Puffing Billy for an evening ofDining and Dancing aboard this iconic train, of course some of us ar-rived much earlier to watch the shunting of trains and locomotives at the station until finally, our loco and train arrived. At 7.30 we all boarded our allottad carriage to find it decorated with Christmas livery and formally set up with dining tables and seating for two or four people, there were also delightfuly presented nibblies for all and refreshments were available once we had left the station area.of course after introductions there was lots of chatter about dancing, Christmas plans and the different venues that each of us frequented. The setting was made even more delightful with the views across the Dandenong Ranges and at time across to Western Port Bay with the sun slowly disappearing between the trees on this delightful day as we travelled toward our destination stopping for a short while at Menzies Creek before being served a delightful first course of hot pumpkin soup. After assing through Emerald, we reached our destination, NobeliusSiding, we entered the historic nursery packing shed established and owned by Carl Nobelius a migrant from Sweden arriving in Australia during1872.

In 1892 Nobelius left his job in South Yarra and moved his family up to his Emerald property. Whilst Nobelius initially concentrated onestablishing a small orchard, he soon turned his attention to nursery stock and early the following year he began trading as ‘Gembrook Nurseries’, as Emerald, at the time, was part of the Parish of Gembrook. The old nursery shed was set up for eighty people, all passengers on the train with pleaseant music supplied by a sole performer and there was ample room for dancing, if that wasn’t good enough there wasalways the station platform to be used and we made use of that later in the evening, after the rest of the meal consisting of a further two courses of a fabulous buffet main course and sweets of sticky date pudding or a choice ofanother delightful dessert (unknown but really nice) had been beenconsumed., then on with the dancing once more, unfortunately as themajority of the passengers preferred pub style music and what we call tea bag dancing the night generated into more of a disco jiggling night inside the nursery, fortunately as social and ballroom dancers we are aversatile mob and we made do with the music provided and restrict-ed our dances to those such as the Merrilyn, Balmoral Blues, and Carousel the occasional Cha Cha and a swing or two with an odd jive or two thrown in for good measure. all out on the platform in the crisp clear air. We noticed a few envious people watching us holding each other while dancing, something they tried to replicate with little suc-cess, my alcohol does strange things to some younger people.Around 11.00 it was time to reboard the carriage and travel back toBelgrave, all while sipping teas, coffee and port, unfortunately ,we were also forced to nibble on fine chocolates at the same time. After disembarkeng some of us managed to find the energy to find an all night McDonalds (yes a McDonalds) where some of us enjoyed an early morning coffee and cakes, all on Seniors rates of course.Would we do it again? Oh yes, only we need to fill the whole train next time.

NEWS FROM CANBERRAHi to you bothLooking ahead to the next Newsletter - could you find a space for this information below

Happy dancing and best wishes for the year aheadMarcia.

Dancing in the ACT in 2018There are some changes and additions this year.

The dance that has been traditionally held at the Harmonie German-Club on a Thursday night has been transferred to Tuesdays. Theformat will remain the same.On some of the first Saturdays of the month Roger will host a dance at the Belconnen Seniors rooms. The first of these is February 3rd, then a break in March and April with the next dance being May 5th.

There will be a monthly Sunday afternoon dance from 1.00pm to 4.30pm at the Southern Cross Club in Woden hosted by Joe The first of these is Sunday 28 January 2018

Diane Smedley will be teaching at 4 venues each week - because of her parents' long time association with the C.O.T.D.C. and CanberraSeniors she does this in a voluntary capacity at those events. For a small charge she will teach before the dance at the Harmonie German Club on Tuesday nights.Independently from any of these events she will run classes at theAustrian-Australian club in Mawson on Monday nights commencing on 15th January. There is more detail about this onhttp://canberradance.weebly.com/special-events-and-news.htmlDiane moved to live in the ACT during 2017 for family reasons. Many of you will remember her parents Brian and Joy Venables who were stalwarts and dance teachers of the Canberra Old Time Dance Club. Diane had her first lessons in dancing as a child in Canberra andobtained her medals. After moving to Mackay she continued to study and taught at Alan Smith's studio before opening her own studio in 1992 where she taught Ballroom Latin, Modern and New Vogue for medals and competition for adults and children as well as social sequence dancing. She also became an Adjudicator in New Vogue and Latin. Over the years her students achieved many honours in competitions from Melbourne through to Cairns. As her studio evolved she added Street Latin styles such as Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, West Coast Swing and Rock

Also moving with the times meant she became a Zumba instructor in 3 levels. In 2015 she was honoured to receive a prestigious national award at the Sydney Latin Festival. "In recognition of outstandingcontribution to the Australian Latin Industry."For over 25 years she has also been passionate about including people with disabilities in the dance family. She ran a dance class and a performance group for people withdisabilities who performed in Brisbane and a number of times inSydney and were invited to the Osaka Latin festival in Japan. There are still a few tickets left for the Ball on the second weekend in April at the Harmonie German Club with Patti Bond and Tony Gilbert providing the music .Tickets for the ball on the long weekend in June hosted by the C.O.T.D.C will be available shortly. Music for this event is provided by Ian Stewart.

CHRISTMAS AT YACKANDANDAH AND LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARDOn a lovely warm December night, with many of the dancers dressed up in their Christmassy finery, the members of the Yackandandah Dance Club came to the hall for their annual Christmas Dinner Dance. All who attended the dance party were focused on enjoyment, which started with a delicious meal, some favourite tipple, and laughter and fun as the tables groups vied with each other, to answer a range of dance and other trivia questions and win a prize. Then came the dancing with more than a few of the dancers singing along to their favourite carols and other enjoyable music.

A special part of the evening was a Life-Membership presentation to the recently retired President Stan Sutherland, who has been a staunchadvocate for the club for over 10 years.

Stan ( front left, was very appreciative of the presentation andexplained to the audience than in the club’s 25 year history he was, only the 6th recipient to receive the Honour of a Life-Membership. Whilst Stan has now stepped away from official duties for the club, his love of dance continues and he plans to continue to grace the floor and dance on with us. He is also looking forward to the resumption of our dance classes and practice nights and the fun and good times Social nights and oursuper special dance weekends, with the first one happening very soon on March 10th & 11th - Labor Day Weekend.

For this special weekend the Dance Music will be provided by the well regarded Tarragals who will also be playing at the Oddfellows Hall at Nearby Corowa on Friday 10th March. This means a great weekend of dancing is happening in our region and we would love to have you join us

Notting Hill Pre Christmas DanceHo Ho Ho! He came again, this time to Mary Cashman’s dance at Notting Hill Community Centre on Sunday 3rd. December. Starting at 7.00 everyone was treated to a pre dance tipple on arrival and before entering the main dance area. During the evening there were heaps of spot prizes, progressive dance thingys to be won, lollies and other treats given away for various reasons. As always there was a great supper to be had and Mary and her team provided exceptionally well with plenty left over to nibble on during the rest of the evening .After the supper break Mary thanked Russ Heskith for his contribution in bringing his knowledge of dance to the Club throughout the year, Mary made presentations to her team also thanking them for their support and to the ballroom dance performers, and of course after this someone purporting to be Santa arrived on a scooter tossing out lollies to all, he also managed to fall off of it in his excitement as well.Unfortunately their door person, Robert, is moving to Sydney with work and a few tears were shed from the girls, good luck. The music on the night as you might expect was a little different with Christmas themes and all those attending, which was in excess of 110 people, enjoyed an excellent night of dancing and socialising. One of the highlights of the evening was a dance display by a newly formed local couple Aron Collins and Michelle Beggs who performed four of their competition routines which included Tango, Lucille Waltz, Merrilyn and Carousel For those returning from holidays dancing recommences with Mary on the 4th.
