Dear Mercer Parents/Guardians,

Mercer is busy putting the final touches on its tenth year,

and what a year it has been! The students attained so many

of their goals and received countless accolades for all of

their accomplishments.

In June, Mercer will celebrate the many successes it has

had with the students. We will first honor eighth grade

students at the Awards’ Night on Wednesday, June 4th, at

7:00 pm. Invitations have already been sent for this. Also,

the Eighth Grade Dinner Dance will be on Friday, June 6th,

from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. On June 5th and 6th, the Mercer

SMILES club will hold its annual walk-a-thon as the final

activity to raise funds. Field day will be on Monday, June

9th, with all three grade levels participating in team and

culminating activities. Those students who ordered

yearbooks will receive them that day, too. Exams for high

school credits classes will run from June 10th – June 13th,

with the final day of school on June 13th. Report cards will

be mailed home on June 18th. Look for the SOL score

reports to be sent home around this time as well.

As we closeout one year, the preparations for the next have

already begun. Plans for many of the events for the

beginning of the next school year have started. The

restructuring of the staff without SAM’s and a Dean, along

with a new wing and anticipated growth in the student

body is taking form. Please be sure to check the Mercer

Homepage frequently throughout the summer for the latest

information on orientations in August and Back to School

Night.

In closing, I would like to send out a general thanks to all

who have made this year a positive and productive one for

the over thousand students we have at Mercer.

Collectively, from the PTA, the parents and families, to the

teachers, support staff and administrative team, to the

students themselves, Mercer has set the bar high in regards

to making choices that positively impact our adolescents

academically, socially and emotionally. The tremendous

growth of the students in all of these areas will serve them

well in the next school year and beyond.

The family of Mercer wishes your family a happy and safe

summer of fun and relaxation. Good luck to the rising

ninth grade students and we will see most of you in

August.

From the PTA President: We have successfully accomplished our goal in funding our Technology initiatives which enabled the purchase of 60

Chrome brooks and three mini iPads. This important contribution will improve the way our children learn with the

integration of these 1:1 devices and position Mercer Middle School to re-apply for the Google Domain. This will also

position our school well for the selection of becoming the Pilot Technology middle school in Loudoun County. Your

continued PTA contributions in the next coming school year will help us reach that goal!

We will officially become a PTSA effective July 1st and, as such, your children will have the opportunity to join as

members of the PTSA! This is exciting. More information will be released over the summer about how Mercer students

can be a part of rolling out our social media platform. We will be looking to form student committees in leading the charge

in assisting our VP of Communications create the Mercer PTSA website for Face book, Instagram and Twitter!

in our festively-decorated gymnasium. More information regarding ticket sales and permission

forms will be forthcoming. We hope to see ALL of our 8th graders at this memorable event!

receive an invitation to this event; all other students and families are welcome to attend.

FIELD DAY Our school-wide Field Day will be held on Monday, June 9. More information to follow. We hope to have great weather

for this fun-filled day!

CHANGING COURSES for NEXT YEAR Counselors at all grade levels have been working with students and parents finalizing course selections for the 2014-15

school year. Any requests for changes must be submitted in writing or via email to the grade level counselor. NO

CHANGES WILL BE MADE TO MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE SELECTIONS AFTER JUNE 13, 2014.

HIGH SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION CHANGES MUST BE SENT TO CHAMPE HS Via: [email protected].

Expunging of High School Grades and Credits Based on a provision of the Virginia Standards of Accreditation, a middle school student who has taken a high school

course while in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade (such as Algebra 1; Geometry; or a foreign language) may elect to have the grade

expunged from the high school records, and then, if desired, take the course again. Strong consideration should be given for

expunging low grades in credit-bearing courses. The student's grade point average and class standing will not include the

grade from the expunged course, nor will the student receive a credit toward graduation for this course. This course will

remain on the middle school transcript; however, the course will not appear on the high school transcript. Only credits

which appear on the high school transcript will count toward a high school diploma. Please be advised that this decision to

expunge the grade is irreversible and must be made by August 15, 2014. The form for requesting to expunge a grade

will be included with your child's report card.

Expungement forms for Rising 8th graders should go to Mrs. Miles at Mercer MS.

Expungement forms for Rising 9th graders should go to Mrs. Christi Campbell at Champe HS.

Please note that repeating a course DOES NOT expunge the course and grade. The expunge form needs to be completed.

Example if a student took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and decided to repeat it in 8th grade, the 7th grade course will need to be

expunged. * If you have questions regarding this provision and how it relates to your child, please call your child's

counselor.

Mercer Smiles

The Mercer Smiles Fundraiser is in full swing. Students have formed teams with their friends and are

raising money to help children around the world receive cleft palate surgery through Smile Train. As

of Friday, May 23rd, the students and staff have raised over $4700, enough to help 19 children! We

will continue raising money until the walk-a-thon on June 5th and 6th. The Walk-a-thon will be held

during the students P.E. class time. Thank you parents for your support of this program!

6th Grade Dean

Mercer Family, As a result of this year’s budget reconciliation and subsequent reduction of deans, I was offered a position in 8 th grade

Civics at Mercer. Although I am extremely grateful for the opportunity, I have decided to follow my passion for

mathematics instruction and have accepted an assignment teaching Algebra at Rock Ridge High School. I have a hard time

finding the right words to express how much I have enjoyed the year with my students, the Mercer staff, and families. It has

been my honor to serve as your dean and I will miss working with each of you. To my 6 th graders- I hope each of you

knows how much I care about you, both as learners and as young people finding your way in the world. Please continue to

work harder when life gets hard, take responsibility when you make mistakes, and care for one another. I’m very proud of

each of you, and I wish you all the best life has to offer.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Heather Ichimura [email protected]

Social Sciences

Congratulations to sixth grader Micaela Flores-Vaccari, seventh grader Shreya Vinjamuri, and eighth grader Noor Singh for their selection as Mercer’s representatives for the LCPS’ “Social Science and Global Studies Student of the Year” Awards. Micaela , Shreya, and Noor each submitted a written application as well as a sample of their written work from their Social Studies class. Their work was selected by members of the Mercer Social Studies Department to represent our school. Next, the girls will compete at the county level for LCPS’ “Student of the Year”, with winners being announced at a ceremony on June 5th at Tuscarora High School. Congratulations and good luck!
