On September 6th, 2019, the Detroit Police Department became the newest member of the Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) program for the U.S. Army and the Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion. With this signing, they have been formally granted partnership status and are excited to announce guaranteed face-to-face interviews for Army PaYS Soldiers.

In attendance at the ceremony were Chief James E. Craig, Chief of the Detroit Police Department, and Major General Brian P. Cummings, Program Executive Officer for TACOM. Chief Craig stated, "Today is an exciting day as we formalize our mission of seeking high quality police applicants through this partnership with Army PaYS.”

Both organizations, the Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion and the Detroit Police Department serve the citizens of the City of Detroit. With seven companies located throughout the state, the Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion recruits quality Soldiers, both officers and enlisted, to meet the needs of the Army. The Battalion carries out this mission with integrity so as to reflect the Warrior Ethos and Army Values. With "a proud tradition of service through excellence, integrity, and courtesy", as stated in their mission statement. Likewise, the Detroit Police Department and its 2,200 officers are responsible for policing Detroit’s 139 square miles. Through innovative crime fighting programs like Cease Fire, Project Green Light, and the new Real Time Crime Center, Detroit has seen sustained reductions in nearly every category of crime.

The PaYS team is extremely excited to welcome the Detroit Police Department to the U.S. Amy family and is more than confident that they will add value to the U.S. Army and the Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion!

On September 19th, Antonio Johnson, Northeast PaYS Marketer, was invited to present the Army PaYS program and provide training to the recruiting battalion on how to leverage the program for mission success. During the hour-long presentation, the Soldiers were very engaged with Antonio and asked questions regarding everything from creating partnerships to incorporating PaYS into their recruiting message. Antonio also informed the group that the NYARNG leads the way in PaYS accessions; selecting more PaYS partners than the other two pilot states (Michigan and Virginia). The presentation concluded with Antonio sharing his contact information and offering assistance to any Soldier and/or team that has additional questions or concerns regarding Army PaYS.

Later that morning, the New York Adjutant General and Commander of the New York Army National Guard, Major General Ray Shields addressed the battalion. MG Shields congratulated the Soldiers on a successful year and recognized some of the battalion’s top performers. MG Shields discussed concerns such as increasing recruiter strength in the battalion, as well as endstrength in the NYARNG by creating more units across the state. The Soldiers asked the commander very specific questions related to their areas of responsibility within the State of New York.

The NYARNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion’s end of year training conference was the perfect segue from a successful FY’19 into a promising FY’20. Now, with Army PaYS in their arsenal of incentives, the Honey Badger Battalion’s future is even brighter. The PaYS Team congratulates LTC Hyer and the entire battalion. We appreciate your support and look forward to a great year.

The Change Of Command ceremony is a ceremony known as “Passing of the Guidon”. The passing of the unit guidon, or colors, represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility from one outgoing Commander to one incoming Commander. This ensures that the unit and its Soldiers are never without official leadership. This also signifies an allegiance of Soldiers to their unit’s Commander.

As former Commander CPT Andrew Hyres shares his experience and farewells with the Joplin Recruiting company, he introduces the new Commander, CPT Nathaniel Thomas Beerman. CPT Nate Beerman earned a commission into the Ordnance Corps after graduating from SUNY University at Buffalo with a Bachelors in Geographical Information Systems and Political Science. With a vast array of military schooling (including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) School, Air Assault School, Fort Drum Pre-Ranger Course, and more), his experience as a leader, and numerous awards he’s earned, CPT Beerman is ready to take on the responsibility and role as the Joplin Recruiting Company’s Commander.

As the Ceremony came to an end, Greg Orr, Mike Hinz, and Neil Lamont had the opportunity to share memories and bid farewells to CPT Hyres and eagerly welcome CPT Beerman to their ongoing partnership and new friendship. Mike Hinz and Neil Lamont are both Army Veterans, and were thrilled to share their Army stories with the commanders. CFI is an Army PaYS partner that supports Military members for their service in an assortment of ways, such as programs, employment, community service, and more.

The Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) is an 11 state mission to drive success and growth within the manufacturing component of business in the United States. The purpose of FAME is to be the driving force for developing world-class technical talent for manufacturing and other employers of technical workers. FAME strives to be a powerful conduit between industry and education.

In the state of Louisiana, home of Fort Polk Army Installation and the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Boise Cascade, a Wood Products Manufacturing Company, leads and chairs the FAME organization for the state called “GEAUXFAME”. Tommy Peek, Human Resources professional for Boise Cascade’s Southern Region and State Chairman of GEAUXFAME sees the development of a “skilled” manufacturing professional as critical to the United States filling the gaps in our technical workforce.

Manufacturing Industry Leaders and Education professionals have realized the need for developing the technicians and leaders of tomorrow’s workforce. We understand the three (3) most commons problems have one common solution:

1. To remain globally competitive, manufacturers must find enough global best, highly-skilled workers.

2. Technically minded individuals desire a well-paying, challenging and rewarding career that they can start TODAY.

3. Communities need a robust, thriving and growing business base with strong employment opportunities to ensure the well-being of their people.

The solution is FAME (the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) and The Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathways, which will:

1. Provide a continuous stream of new-to-field skilled workers in sufficient numbers to keep job openings filled with graduates who have the world’s best technical preparation.

2. Provide high paying jobs doing critical work to individuals who complete the AMT Program. Provide an on-going growth path beyond that which both fulfills an individual’s desire to grow and develop; and fulfills a company’s need for employees who continuously learn more and more about their jobs and contributing to the company’s business performance.

3. Answer the most critical question that employers ask when considering placing a new business in a location, or expanding an existing one: “Can I find the skilled talent that I need to support my operations?” The inability to provide a good answer to this question is the No. 1 reason why employers do NOT bring new business to a location. The AMT Program and the continued strength brought by the other career pathways fully answer’s this question with a resounding, “Yes!!”

Boise Cascade Introduces New Manufacturing Programs

Story & Photos by Tommy Peek

The United States Army has built a legacy of training young adults to fight and win our country’s wars and conflicts for 244 years. The leadership training and mentorship developed through a Soldier’s career is deeply needed and sought after. What better way to apply/add those traits to a technical program that will enhance our Country’s manufacturing infrastructure. The Partnership with Boise Cascade and the Army PaYSprogram has opened a pathway for fulfillment of that need.

Meet Anthony M. VelascoI am an Army Veteran of 25 combined active years of service. My last 10 years on active duty, I served in the Active Guard Reserves as a recruiter. Little did I anticipate that I would enjoy serving in a recruiting position as much as I did. Prospecting for candidates to become Soldiers and serve in the largest military organization was sometimes challenging but I just carried a lot of value and honor to serving in the Army. I held a lot of pride for recruiting for the next generation of Army professionals. So this empowered and motivated my outreach to market the career opportunities, education, and valued experiences to others who would be the future Soldiers and leaders in our Army organization.

Since I have retired from active duty, I continued in the business of recruiting for another company, again prospecting professional talents needed to sustain and maintain 100% manpower to keep the company operation effective. Later, I accepted a position as a team marketer on the Army PaYS team. This was a great opportunity made available for me, to be in my element and to serve the Army organization of young professionals. Once again, I am able to facilitate career opportunities to the same professionals I use to once recruit to be Soldiers. Now I am able to participate in their successful transition back into the civilian life so they may continue to walk a successful path provided by the Army’s effort of caring for its Veterans.

I am grateful to be married to a wonderful lady and to be a father of 5 awesome children who I adore. My biggest value is my family. On my off time I commonly spend much of my time just being available for my family. Also, on my free time, I gather up donated clothes and take personal pride to directly distribute to the homeless individuals within my community. I am a strong advocate for ending homelessness in America. I love to write, read, meditate, and continue to keep myself physically fit as often as possible.

What inspires me in my life is my openness to being connected to all people and having open dialogues that promotes a culture of being united by sharing common grounds versus focusing on differences that often keep us divided. I see a transformation evolving from life that brings a global community into formation with one another. My favorite quote, “we growthrough a transformation, to come together into a formation” in a lifetime.

Meet Gabby BonillaHello, my name is Gabby Bonilla. I permanently moved to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in 2014, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Communications Media (minor in Sociology) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I’ve always been a creative, innovative, and outgoing person. I’m always excited when I get time to learn a new program and experimenting with it (Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Photoshop). I enjoy reading non-fiction books, watching scary movies (October is my favorite Month), being a professional critic after binge-watching a series, creating fashionable looks with my very “limited” wardrobe, and cooking an amazing meal.

When I graduated in 2013, I had no idea what I wanted to do, the world seemed a lot bigger and a playground for opportunity. I did know that I wanted to make an impact. As the newest Army PaYS social media marketing coordinator, I am making it my goal to increase awareness for the Army PaYS program via social media and our monthly Newsletter. I’m excited to be a part of a team so passionate about their service and helping service members succeed in their next career. As the Army PaYS program continues to succeed, I’m eager to see what my future holds with this amazing program!

Crancena Ross - Serving Our Communities

Army PaYS Marketer, Crancena Ross takes time to volunteer at Moveable Feast, a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore, Maryland. Moveable Feast provides food and services to individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses.

The founder, Baltimore City Health Department Official Robert Mehl, recognized a need in the community for services during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the community. The organization was founded in 1990; Robert assembled a committee at the direction of then Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke. In its first year, the organization's staff of three provided food and services to 60 clients bi-weekly and twice per day. By 2001, this had increased to serving the nutritional needs of about 550 people in the region.

Prepping meals for those individuals that can't leave home and aren't able to prepare meals for themselves. We sometimes take for granted what we can do for ourselves and forget to realize there are people that can’t get out of bed in the morning or need assistance with daily task. Crancena serves her community by volunteering her time at Moveable Feast, feeding the homeless, and donating clothes for those in need in the Baltimore, MD area.
