Throughout the month of April, organizations throughout the UScelebrate national volunteer month. Volunteers helped establish

each community in the Simpson Senior Services network.Volunteers significantly contribute to our success.

Many volunteers are highly visible on our campuses. They conductactivities, visit with residents in skilled nursing or memory supportprograms, serve on committees and offer their talents in myriadways. For the work and passion of these men and women we offerour sincerest thanks.

Occasionally when a newcomer visits one of our campuses he or she is amazed to learn that our Board members also serve as volunteers. They simply assume that the devotion, time anddedication our board members invest must mean they are com-pensated for their service. Quite the contrary! While the membersof each of our Boards serve for their own reasons, their reward isnot financial. Rather their reward is the knowledge and satisfactionthat their combined efforts safeguard, sustain, and fulfill our mission to serve older adults, including many of modest means.

In each issue of LifeScapes we introduce you to one of our Boardmembers. As you read this issue, I hope you will enjoy the profile ofDr. Mark Goldberg, Chair of the Simpson House Board. Dr. Goldberg,along with the more than thirty other women and men who serveon one of our Boards, provide experience, insight and wisdom. I hopeyou will join me in thanking each of them as well as the countlessother volunteers whose kindness of spirit and dedication to our mission ensures we are Embracing Life throughout the year.

Whether you’re a first timeenrollee or are reviewing yourexisting plan, it’s important totake a look at what options youhave. Before selecting a plan,you may have a lot of questionsabout what benefits each planoffers, plan or prescriptioncosts, or which doctors areavailable to you.

With questions like these,selecting an appropriateMedicare plan and feelingcomfortable with your decisioncan be more than a little daunt-ing — especially since there aremore than 132,000 pages ofMedicare rules and regulationsand multiple plans available in our area.* How will you know which of them best suits your needs?

A licensed insurance agent canhelp make the decision making process a lot easier. Agents pro-vide individual counsel by takingtime to get to know you and yoursituation. They work with peoplelike you to match your needs toan appropriate Medicare plan —taking the guesswork out ofunderstanding, comparing andapplying for Medicare benefits.

If you’ve recently become eligiblefor Medicare, your mailbox is rea-son enough to contact an agent.The piles of Medicare relatedbrochures, letters, and packetsare information overload.

As you prepare to choose aMedicare plan, here are a fewhelpful tips for selecting andworking with an insurance agent:

1. Find an agent who specializesin Medicare benefits and rep-resents a variety of health planoptions.

2. Work with an agent who canmeet with you one-on-one.

3. Consider finding someonewhose office is located nearyou. Local agents may bemore flexible when it comes tomeeting during your schedule.

4. Make sure the agent is anactive listener and seeks tounderstand your specific situ-ation and health care goals.

5. Verify that the agent youselect provides consultationsat no cost to you.

6. Interview the agent to under-stand how he or she wouldoffer a custom solution that istailored to your needs.

7. Ask how the agent works —what is the process? A goodagent will do the legwork ofselecting health plans thatapply to you and will help youcompare and contrast theirbenefits and costs.“A licensed insurance agent can

help make the decision makingprocess a lot easier.”

As a Medicare beneficiary, choosing your Medicare benefits plan isone of the most important decisions you’ll make.

BIOGRAPHY

MARK GOLDBERG, DPMBoard Chair, Simpson House

Dr. Mark Goldberg is a quiet butdynamic presence at Simpson

House. As a Doctor of PodiatricMedicine, he routinely sees residentswho live in all parts of the campus.Professionally, Dr. Goldberg works to prevent, diagnose, and treat footdisorders, diseases and injuries sothat residents may remain as inde-pendent as possible. Working withresidents has brought him to a keenawareness of their life journeys.“There are so many interesting people living here. Every day I seeresidents here I am inspired by theirlives and kindness,” he reflects.

Prior to joining the Board, Dr.Goldberg was invited by the thenactivities director to hold a Sederdinner. It has become a very specialannual tradition. Dr. Goldberg viewshis service on the Board as both anopportunity and as a responsibility.“There must be a place for womenand men who have lived their livesin and around this area to retire intheir own neighborhoods. SimpsonHouse has been that place for nearly150 years — and it will continue tobe for decades to come. The Boardis committed to that,” he empha-sizes. He adds, “The Board doesn’tdo it alone. The combination ofBoard, staff, volunteers, familymembers and residents makesSimpson House a wonderful com-munity. It is a special place becausewe each do our part.”

MARYNELL BENSON Marynell Benson is Senior Vice President of Operations for Optum, a UnitedHealth Group company.

She oversees the UnitedHealth-care Nursing Home Plan and theEvercare clinical program inPennsylvania and Delaware, whichhas served Simpson House for 10

years, beginning in 2003. As thesocial responsibility lead for hercompany she brought the volun-teerism of Evercare Employees to Simpson House. She Serves on the steering committee for the Simpson House EmbracingLife Dinner and is on the Board of Directors of the CatholicCharities Appeal for theArchdiocese of Philadelphia.

8. Once you’ve selected a plan,ensure the agent will help yougather and fill out the properpaperwork you need to apply.

Insurance agents have helpededucate and empower thousandsof people like you to select aMedicare plan that works forthem. They can present you witha wide range of plan options andare ready to discuss specifichealth plans that provide bene-fits that may be important toyou. An agent will talk about avariety of Medicare options andwalk you through each healthplan until you narrow it down toone that makes sense. And whenyou’re ready, the agent can helpyou complete your application.

Medicare benefits for the 2013plan year offer expanded choices,and in many cases, lower costs tobeneficiaries. Benefits under theAffordable Care Act continue tobe available — including certainfree preventive benefits, cancerscreenings, and an annual wellnessvisit. Average premiums for 2013for prescription drug coverageand Medicare health plans will

remain flat. People who are in the“donut hole” in Medicare’s pre-scription drug benefit will enjoy 53percent discounts on coveredbrand-name drugs and 21 percentdiscounts on generic drugs.

Each licensed insurance agentknows all sides of Medicare —acting not simply as an insurancebroker to help you select anappropriate plan, but also as atrusted insurance partner who isavailable to answer your specificquestions and get you the rightinformation to meet your needs.They know that selecting aMedicare plan isn’t a one-and-done decision, and they under-stand that no two beneficiariesare alike.

PHILANTHROPY

By now you may think youhave heard too much about

the “fiscal cliff,” the “sequester”and the debates taking place inWashington. But Congress hasresurrected a popular tax-lawprovision, known as the “IRAcharitable rollover,” that hadexpired at the end of 2011. TheSenate Finance Committeereports the law will “sunset,” or die, at the end of 2013 makingthis an opportunity that may not be available after the end of the year.

The rule allows many investors 701/2 or older to transfer as much as$100,000 a year from an individualretirement account directly to aqualified charity without having to count any of that transfer astaxable income. If done properly,the transfer will count toward the taxpayer’s required minimumdistribution for that year.

To think about whether it may be for you please considerwhether you:

• Take the mandatory minimumwithdrawal, but don’t need additional income;

• Wish to give more than thedeductibility ceiling (50% ofAdjusted Gross Income);

• Are subject to the 3% rule that reduces your itemizeddeductions;

• Wish to make a charitable giftduring your lifetime and yourmajor assets are in your IRA(s);and/or

• Intend to leave the balance of your IRA to charity upon your death.

Other considerations include:

• You must be at least 70 1/2 yearsold and may make direct charita-ble transfers up to $100,000 pertaxpayer per year.

• Charitable distributions must bemade directly to the charitableorganization from the IRA by the plan provider and must be an outright gift.

• Gifts may not be used to estab-lish a life-income arrangement,such as a charitable gift annuity.

• Rollover gifts escape federalincome tax but are NOT tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.
