President’s Remarks,

Hi Members and Friends of FCGA,

Hope you are having fun battling the harsh Canberra winter. Members had a great time last week on the course and the later in the clubhouse where a lot of stories were shared in which some were funny and some inspiring too. Well before we even realise, winter will be gone and spring will bring spring in the steps of golfers. I am sure every golfer will agree with me that the only place we don’t feel cold is in the Tee off area, fairways, and on Greens and that is the reason we are there on the course. Jokes aside, friends, our monthly competitions are getting tighter and tighter and as some of the golfers are out of race for this year’s championship, others are tightening their grips to stay in top. Let’s see who takes the FCGA championship in 2018. The FCGA AGM was held last month and it was really a fruitful one. A lot was discussed and lots of decisions were made on the night to take this club to next level. I would like to welcome all committee members bck to the leadership group and also welcome the newest member ( Newal Singh) to the team. I believe this team is on the roll and will work together for the betterment of the club and its members. I am really looking forward to spring season which will bring, our Golf Away, Captains Cup, Matchplay Championship and of course, Gala Dinner and Awards night. Happy golfing Friends. 2018 FCGA Championship Leader Board

Round 6 of the 2018 FCGA Championship started with a strong field turning up at Murrumbidgee Golf Club despite the very cold and wet conditions with an early taste of winter. It was an overcast and a very cold morning with light chilly wind. Despite the weather, we made good progress knowing the 19th hole was only 18 holes away. After round six, our Captain produced a fantastic round to take the lead from Navin, Being at number one of the ladder is not easy…as many players would attest. It now remains to see if Captain Hem holds on to number one position after June comp. FCGA has lots of giant killer players who come up with a surprising round. Congratulations to Captain Hem Chandra for winning the round in very tough conditions announcing he is a serious contender continuing his consistent form. Congratulations to all the other proxy comp winners.

LIFE in THE TRAPS

Captains Corner

Fellow golfers as we say good bye to autumn and enter the winter season let’s take the challenge to step up to keep the passion for golf going. While we maintain the passion of sportsmanship remember the opportunities will come to each one of us just like that they will be gone too. Lots of thing will go through your mind but remain positive and calm especially to maintain the leader board which requires consistence performance We are all friends out there playing big competition but we would like to have good time. All I can say is keep trying the better days are ahead. When you value sports it makes you go wow but the bigger question is how people are doing so we. All I can say is there is no fear or favor in this sport believe in yourself and continue to learn from one another and of course practice. Looking at the leaderboard it’s clear that the pressure is mounting (just like putting under pressure) any player can jump the leader. Take every opportunity as a good putting make you win the competition. Tension is good for performance it’s just normal as long as there is a motivation to go forward in sports. As I see we are good team as long as we stay together we will be great team.

Sound advice from our resident PGA

Professional - James McMaster

James has agreed to provide a monthly tip for our members. This month’s article – LASER FOCUS for DRIVING. Many club golfers set up on each tee with the aim of simply keeping the ball within the tree line or within the bounds of the fairway. The problem with doing this is that by giving yourself such a huge target area to aim for you only need to be a little bit off target and you are in the trees again. A lot of club golfers will also tend to focus on the negatives such as ‘I need to stay away from the water hazard’ or ‘I can’t hit it left here or I’ll be out of bounds’ which often causes the body to tense up and in these situations players will do exactly what they focused on ‘not doing’. Some players will also go to the polar extreme, and by staying away from the left hand side OOB end up hitting it 30m into the right trees. Do any of these situations sound like your last game of golf? If so, I challenge all of you to try this simple tip during your next round whilst teeing off on every hole. Rather than aiming for the fairway, really dial in your senses and pinpoint a specific target on the golf course such as… - the small mound in the middle of the fairway. - the player in the group in front walking along the middle 300m away. - if there is a dogleg and you can’t over hit the corner a great target would be a specific tree or landmark in a direct line through the middle of the fairway. - the small patch of dry grass in the centre of the landing area.

Every course will have different targets for you to focus on but the key to all of this is focus on a small target to block out external influences and to avoid thinking about the dangers on each hole. This can be extended to your approach shots, chipping and putting but let’s start simple for now with the driving as we generally have a much larger landing area than any other shot. Regards, James McMaster

Golf Guru – has retired

Going forward, now that FCGA is an official social club, we will bring you news and golfing updates from Golf NSW.

Rules of Golf Golf is a game in which a ball is struck with a club from a prepared area, known as the "teeing ground", across fairway and rough to a second prepared area, which has a hole in it, known as the "putting green". The object of the game is to complete what is known as a hole by playing a ball from the teeing ground into the hole on the putting green in the fewest possible number of strokes. A "round of golf" consists of playing 18 such holes. There are basically two forms of play, one which is decided by holes won and lost (match play) and the other which is decided by the total number of strokes taken to complete the round (stroke play). There are three important principles to remember when playing golf: • Play the course as you find it. • Play the ball as it lies. • And if you can't do either, do what's fair.
