Dear 4-H Families and Advisors:

Welcome to the Junior Fair Issue of the “Fulton County 4-H FYI” newsletter! In this

issue you’ll find information about remaining species clinics, shows, skillathons, and

other preparatory items for Junior Fair.

The Fulton County Senior Fair Board decided to hold a Junior Fair only in mid June.

They were extremely thoughtful in this decision, and 4-H is fortunate to have the

support of this group of people. This decision was made to protect the health and

safety of the Junior Fair exhibitors and all citizens of Fulton County. Junior Fair will be

very different than fairs we have experienced in years past. I ask you to exercise

patience, kindness, and flexibility as we all navigate what a Junior Fair only looks like.

I strongly encourage all 4-Hers to participate in a skillathon on August 15. All

skillathons will be the second Saturday in August from now on, unless there is a

schedule conflict with the Ohio State Fair (as there originally was in 2020). It’s a great

way to practice for Showmanship knowledge and is another chance to win a ribbon at

the fair! Even if you are not taking a project in a particular species, you are welcome

to participate non-competitively, practice your skills, and prepare yourself for future

Showman of Showmen competition. Skillathon is also the first step in the

Outstanding Market Exhibitor competition for beef, sheep, and swine exhibitors which

culminates in a $1,000 award per species winner! It’s the same for the Outstanding

Species Exhibitor competition for goats too. Skillathons are available for all species

this year, except horses. There will be ribbons awarded for the top five youth in each

age division for all species at their respective Junior Fair shows.

If something happens that you are not able to exhibit at the Fulton County Junior Fair,

remember Junior Far exhibition is not required to complete a project in 4-H. Should

there be an unfortunate circumstance where animals die, Quality Assurance wasn’t

completed, or there were unforeseen obstacles– youth can still complete your 4-H

project by attending 5 meetings, completing community service, and completing

book judging.

Don’t forget to enroll in Blue Ribbon Online for your Junior Fair entries by 11:59 pm

on August 1. If you were waiting for the revised Junior Fair schedule to come out

before you signed up, it’s available at https://fultoncountyfair.com/2020-junior-fair-

schedule-and-guidelines/ You may also need information from the Fulton County

Junior Fair Handbook, available at https://fultoncountyfair.com/wp-content/

uploads/2020/07/JrFrBook-2020_edited.pdf If you are unable to access the internet,

please feel free to call the Fulton County OSU Extension Office and make an

appointment to complete your entries on one of our computers!

Failure to Meet Requirements to Show/Exhibit

at the Fair -

Head Advisors, you are to notify the Extension Office of

any 4-H member who fails to finish all of their projects

OR did not make the five meeting requirement. Failure

to meet either of these two objectives results in Junior

Fair ineligibility. The Extension Office needs to be aware

of this before fair week.

Please remember, youth must be complete in all projects

to exhibit at the fair. If youth are in 2 clubs, they must be

complete in all projects in both clubs to exhibit at the

fair.

Special consideration may need to be provided this year due

to extenuating circumstances surrounding COVID-19. Please

discuss directly with Kayla Miller at [email protected] if

you feel there is a special circumstance for a youth or family

in your club.

Livestock Interview Judging - Advisors, August 1st will mark the

beginning of interview judging for livestock projects for

junior fair eligibility. Livestock interviews including horses

and dogs must be completed for fair eligibility. Volunteer

JUNIOR FAIR PARTICIPATION Participation in the Fulton County Junior Fair exhibits and shows is NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A

4-H PROJECT. It is the expectation of the Livestock Sale Committee and the Fulton County Fair Di-

rectors that you exhibit your own animal. Off grounds events are not considered special circum-

stances.

JUNIOR FAIR SHOWCASE (VIRTUAL JUNIOR FAIR BUILDING DISPLAY)

We know 2020 has been a crazy year for everyone. In lieu of having still projects on display at the Fair and our

community walking through the animal barns, we want to highlight our Junior Fair Exhibitors through an online

gallery – The 2020 Junior Fair Showcase. This will be a great way for our community to see the efforts of our

youth.

To do this, we need all Junior Fair exhibitors to submit a photo of themselves with their project. We realize

some youth have more than one project, however, feel free to be creative and showcase as many as you can in

one photo, or select your favorite.

Once we receive the photos, a slide show/video will be produced for each 4-H Club and FFA Chapter and will

be posted on the Fulton County Fair’s website. Along with the video, we’ll list each member of that

club/chapter, their age, parent’s name, and their projects.

So, get those camera’s out and Say Cheese! Deadline for photo submission is August 2.

Please see the participation release and instructions to submit your photo below.

Whether that’s you baking in your kitchen, hanging up a bird feeder you made, modeling your sewing project

or maybe walking your dog.

Submitting your Photo: We will be using DropBox to collect the photos. You don’t need to have a DropBox

account, simply follow the link that corresponds to your 4-H/FFA Club. This invitation to add your file is from

Youth Participation Release:

2020 Fulton County Junior Fair Showcase Youth Participation Release.

To highlight the efforts of the 2020 Fulton County Junior Fair participants, we will be posting photos of

each participant’s project on the Fulton County Fair website. The Ohio State University Extension Fulton

County website and various social media pages may also utilize the submitted photos in the future. Par-

ticipating in this showcase is on a volunteer basis. By submitting a photo, you are giving the authoriza-

tion to use the photo of the youth on the websites listed above and various social media pages – as

these sites and pages are public, others can copy and paste these photos. By submitting a photo, you are

VETERINARY ANIMAL CHECK AND WEIGH-IN AT FAIR

Due to animals (except for horses) not staying overnight at the Fulton County Junior Fair, a vet check is not re-

quired at Gate K. A horse veterinarian will check animals at Gate F. Check traffic flow maps to determine how to

enter the Fairgrounds appropriately.

All youth must have their animal health papers and mostly completed DUNF (if needed). The DUNF will be turned in

at the weigh scales. Do not complete “Animal ID” section if your animal is receiving permanent Fair identifi-

cation (i.e. yellow EID tag) at the scales. Scurs: Fair veterinarian will be responsible to make the final determina-

tion on whether an animal with a scur will be allowed to show at the fair. Dairy market, market Boers, and pygmy

goats may have scurs or horn regrowth under 1 inch. Breeding goats (dairy and Boer) must adhere to

horned/dehorned breed standards.

DRUG USE NOTIFICATION FORM (DUNF) AND QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM

It is mandatory for all Ohio Junior Fair market animal exhibitors to complete a Drug Use Notification Form (DUNF)

and attend a Quality Assurance Program before showing their animal at the Fulton County Fair. This is a mandate of the

Ohio Department of Agriculture. It is mandatory for all Fulton County Junior Fair animal exhibitors to attend a Quality

Assurance Program. This is a mandate of the Fulton County Livestock Sale Committee and an Ohio law. Fulton County’s

“fair code” to be entered at the top of the DUNF form is 74.

All animals coming into Ohio from Michigan have health requirements. For a copy of the Ohio State Regulation Health Re-

quirements governing the admission of animals, available at the Extension Office or go to the following website address:

http://www.agri.ohio.gov/animal/ For more information on current regulations, please contact: Dr. Tony Forshey DVM,

Chief, Division of Animal Industry, ODA, 8995 East Main St., Reynoldsburg, OH 43068.

2020 ANIMAL TREATMENT PROTOCOL

1.) Junior Fair will give veterinary attention to individual animals as requested by the exhibitor or parent to fulfill a valid vet-

erinary-client-patient relationship. If we see animals that require veterinary care, we will attempt to contact the exhibitor,

but it is the exhibitor’s primary responsibility to report sick animals.

2.) Fair veterinarians will be on the fairgrounds sporadically throughout the days Junior Fair shows are exhibiting.

3.) Emergency treatments/examinations (not during the designated time) will be done as seen fit by

the veterinarians.

4.) The exhibitor, a parent, Senior Fair Board member, or species director must contact the veterinari-

an for emergency treatments.

RELEASE OF ANIMALS

Non-market animals should be taken home at the conclusion of the species Junior Fair show.

Horses will be released by the Fair Director in Charge on Monday, September 7.

HEALTH MANDATES FROM NORTHWEST VETERINARY HOSPITAL (Official Fair Veterinarian)

Drug Use Notification Forms (D.U.N.F.) are required on all market animals at the species weigh scales and for every

animal treated during the fair, including non-market animals, animals treated by owners, and other veterinarians. It is the

owner’s responsibility to complete a new D.U.N.F and give to the official fair veterinarian; if not, the exhibitor is responsible for any

consequences. All sheep are required to be Scrapie tagged or Scrapie tattooed before they enter the fairgrounds, no exceptions!

Scrapie tags/tattoos are not available at the scales. All sheep must have a Scrapie record card, Scrapie tag, and/or Scrapie

tattoo with them when on the Fairgrounds.

Junior Fair Health Requirements for sheep, stipulate there be no evidence of fungal infections. For a fungal infection to be consid-

ered noninfectious, the lesion must have no scale or crusting present and show some evidence of wool re-growth. If there are any

questions regarding health issues, please contact the fair veterinarian prior to fair for a ruling. The official fair veterinarian’s decision

is final.

The Fulton County Fair is a slick-sheared market lamb show. All market lambs must be slick shorn within 10 days of inspec-

tion at the scales. Any market lambs not slick shorn will be turned away. Market lambs must be slick shorn before they can

enter the fairgrounds. If any animals show evidence of a contagious or infectious disease, they will be removed from the

grounds as soon as possible.

JF8. SCRAPIES DISEASE REGULATIONS All market and breeding sheep must have the ODA approved Scrapie ear tag of identification from the flock of origin before entering

JF14. FAIR PENS The Sr. Fair Board will withhold premiums from 1.) Exhibitors that have dirty or unsightly pens; 2.) Exhibitors who move their animals from assigned pens without prior approval from the Sr. Fair Board. Questions? Refer to the Fulton County Fair Book.

LIVESTOCK TRAILER PARKING Jr. Fair livestock exhibitors should take their empty trailers home after bringing their animal (s) to the fair. The Sr. Fair Board suggests that if you need a trailer to store feed that you either share a trailer with other animal exhibitors or possibly the 4-H club could designate a trailer for its club members to use. Empty trailers parked south of the steer barns will be moved.

CAR PASSES FOR FAIR If you are not camping at the fair and need a car pass to get you closer to the barns to bring in feed, you may pick up a load/unload car pass (one per family for large animals only, includes goats) at the Junior Fair Office during weigh-in time only.

JF17. JR FAIR PREMIUM CHECKS The Jr. Fair premium checks are good for 30 days only! Please cash your check promptly, as the Sr. Fair Secretary must balance the account books to be audited.

JF18. APPROPRIATE DRESS FOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING AND SALE This dress code is for all Jr. Fair animal exhibitors, except horses and dogs. Jr. Fair horse exhibitors should consult the Uniform Horse Rules Book. Jr. Fair dog exhibitors should wear nice dress clothes that compliments the color of your dog and closed toe shoes.

This dress code should be followed for both the livestock show and sale.

Dark pants or jeans. Shorts are prohibited. White collared shirt with sleeves. Youth with poultry and rabbit projects should wear long-sleeve shirts to

avoid scratches. T-shirts and spaghetti strap shirts are not appropriate. Hard soled shoes (work boots or cowboy boots). No tennis shoes or sandals. Exception: tennis shoes may

be worn to show rabbits and poultry. No hats or caps.

No clothing items with logos. Rabbit exhibitors may wear plain all white lab coats with out names or logos.

JF19. NO SALE ANIMALS The Fulton County Livestock Shows are terminal market shows – no market animal goes home. All 4-H

or FFA market animals weighed in at the fair will go to slaughter. “Extra” no sale animals, which are

market animals other than designated sale animals, MUST be brought to the show arena after the

selling of that species to be loaded on a commercial carrier and hauled to market. This would include

your second hog if you brought both a barrow and gilt to show. Feeder calves are not considered a

finished market animal and are excluded from this rule. Failure to bring animals at the designated load

time will mean loss of donation in sale ring on your other animal.

LIVESTOCK TRAILER PARKING

Junior Fair exhibitors are able to show any livestock off their trailer if they desire to

do so. Please park trailers near the arena the species show is occurring in and park

in dry areas (if the ground is wet from rain). Please pick up trash (including

clippings) around the trailer before returning home with breed animals.

CAR PARKING AT FAIR

Cars will be allowed to enter inside the fence on the Fulton County Fairgrounds and

park for the 2020 Junior Fair Only. You are encouraged to park at your camping spot if possible. If

you do not have a camping spot or are physically unable to walk that far, you are allowed to park

closer to the buildings. Please leave room for the exhibitors and their livestock trailers. Please park

in dry areas (if the ground is wet from rain).

JF13. JUNIOR FAIR PREMIUM CHECKS

Please cash your check promptly, as the bank representative and Senior Fair Secretary must balance the account books to be

audited.

JF14. APPROPRIATE DRESS FOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING AND SALE

Uniform Horse Rules Book. Junior Fair dog exhibitors should wear dress clothes that compliment the color of the dog and

closed toe shoes.

This dress code should be followed for both the livestock show and sale.

1. Dark pants or dark jeans. Shorts are prohibited.

2. White collared shirt with sleeves. Button down shirts preferred. Youth with poultry and rabbit projects should wear long

-sleeve shirts to avoid scratches.

5. No clothing items with logos.

6. Rabbit exhibitors may wear plain all white lab coats.

bows, and jewelry. Showmen are exhibiting animals and should not draw attention to themselves.

JF15. NO SALE ANIMALS The Fulton County Livestock Shows are terminal market shows – no market animal goes home. All 4-H or FFA market

animals weighed in at the fair will go to slaughter. “Extra” no sale animals, which are market animals other than

designated sale animals, MUST be brought to the commercial carrier trucks after show is complete. This would

include your second hog if you brought both a barrow and gilt to show. Feeder calves are not considered a finished

market animal and are excluded from this rule. Failure to bring animals at the designated load time will mean loss of

donation in sale ring on your other animal.

Q. When/where do I turn in my DUNF form?

A. The Drug Use Notification Forms (and other appropriate paperwork) will be turned in at the weigh scales.

Q. Will the veterinarians be checking animals on their way in the gate?

A. No. Legally, since the animals are not staying overnight (except for horses), the Fair veterinarians do not have to check

the animals as they come through the gate. What will we do if our animal needs veterinary care while on the

Fairgrounds? The Fair veterinarians will be available to provide care to animals who need it during the Junior Fair

livestock shows. Please contact a Fair Director in Charge if your animal needs attention.

Q. Will there be bedding provided at the Fulton County Junior Fair?

A. Exhibitors are expected to bring their own animal bedding to the Fulton County Junior Fair and are expected to clean up

the bedding when they leave the premises. If an exhibitor is showing multiple species several days in a row (i.e. beef

breeding on Friday, feeder calf on Saturday, steer on Tuesday) please let a Fair Director in Charge know you will be

returning to clean up the bedding.

Thursday, July 30 6-8 pm at the Fulton County Fairgrounds– Hallett Pavilion Hosted by a local poultry Junior Fair and APA Judge, Mark Lange. Topics covered will be showmanship and preparation for Junior Fair show. His specialization is chickens, but he is knowledgeable in all poultry species. Please bring your own chairs, plan to practice social distancing, and bring a mask to wear. No need for you to bring your own poultry.

Q. Are we allowed to bring in grooming stands early?

A. Yes, but only a few hours earlier than the check-in/scale times begin. Grooming stands should not be

brought on the Fairgrounds more than a few hours in advance.

Q. Will I be able to use a stall/pen for my animal?

A. You may if you wish to do so. Showing off your trailer is also acceptable (see JF 11). Rabbits and poultry will not have

pens available to them. Please plan accordingly.

Q. Who can camp at the Junior Fair?

A. Any exhibitor who brings an animal onto the Fulton County Fairgrounds for exhibition is eligible to occupy one

camping spot at the Junior Fair. Cost is $20/night. Register with Jamie Buehrer at 419-410-6208 by August 1 to

reserve a spot. Camping move in will be Thursday, September 3 starting at 12 pm and can go through Thursday,

September 10. If a family wishes to camp a different period of time, please make arrangements directly with Jamie.

Q. Will there be food at the Junior Fair?

A. We don’t know yet. We hope there will be, a few local vendors have been asked to open their stands. It is

up to the vendor (in consultation with the Fair Director in Charge) and whether or not they choose to have

their stand open during Junior Fair, what hours they will hold, and what items they choose to sell. Plan on

packing food and drinks to be safe!

Q. Will my animal be coming through the sale ring with me?

A. No. After the species show, market animals will be loaded on the market trailers. Junior Fair’s goal is to

coordinate with the packers to load out market animals as soon after the show is done as possible. It is your

responsibility to care for your animal until it is loaded out. Unless your animal is a Grand or Reserve

Champion. Then they stay until the drug test is complete.

Q. Will my animal be staying overnight on the Fairgrounds?

A. No. Unless you are taking a horse or your market animal is a Grand or Reserve Champion. Market

champions will stay until the drug test is complete. All breed animals should go home immediately at the

conclusion of the species show.

Q. What is the livestock sale going to look like?

A. The livestock sale will be held in person in the Spangler Arena and will be the same time and day. As

mentioned before, exhibitors will not have their animal with them. Pictures will be taken the day of the show of the

youth and their animal. This picture will be displayed while the youth’s donation bids are happening.

Q. How will we know what the show order is if we can’t be in the barn early to see the posted show bill?

A. The Fulton County Fair has agreed to post show bills online this year. They should be posted the week

leading up to Junior Fair.

Q. My grandma and grandpa want to watch me show, how can I help them view the show from home?

A. Junior Fair is working to determine what type of streaming can occur during the Junior Fair shows. Stay

tuned for more details. There will also be media coverage at the Junior Fair. 96.1 WMTR/94.3 The Buck

have hourly broadcasts they could tune into as well.

Q. Do I need a wristband to get on the Fairgrounds?

A. Yes. Every single person who enters the Fairgrounds will need to be wearing a wristband. When they pass

through the gate, the Senior Fair Board member working the gate will check for wristbands on each

passenger and the driver. A list of all names will be available at the gates for the Sheriff’s Office to

reference if needed.

Completing Livestock Project Books

Livestock project books must be judged in the

club before the start of the Fulton County Fair for an

exhibitor to participate in Fulton County Junior Fair

activities. Some 4-Hers find it challenging to com-

plete the financial portion of their project book when

they have not yet sold their animal at the Fulton

County Junior Fair. It is important for 4-H youth to

learn if their project turns a profit or not.

Therefore, to assist 4-Hers in completing a full

record, 4-Hers are encouraged to reference the table

at right, which uses statistics from 2019 Fulton Coun-

ty Fair, to complete the financial record portion of

their project book.

NOTE: These are not final values for 2020 Ful-

ton County Fair. Market forces can change values

up to 20% in either direction.

Fulton County 4-H FYI

Don’t forget to write thank you notes

to sponsors who support you and Junior Fair.

HINT: Remember your advisors and

project helpers too.

Livestock Sale Information “No Sale Animals” must be loaded after the species sells in the ring. See the Junior Fair News section of

this newsletter.

If your designated “donation” sale animal is not coming to the fair, you must notify the Extension Office

by 4:00 p.m. on the Wednesday before the fair. The computer program does not default your chosen

sale animal to another animal. If you do not notify the Extension Office of the change, you may not get your

name in the Donation Sale Catalog. You will still weigh-in and show your animal, but it will be loaded on the

truck and you will only get the support price of the animal. Please take responsibility for this and notify the

Extension Office.

Changing your “donation” sale animal is only permitted in the following cases:

a) an animal is chosen as Grand or Reserve Champion

b) death of an animal at the fair

c) if the Extension Office was notified before fair of an animal not coming to fair

d) designated sale animal does not come to the fair.
