The Al Shaqab Racing- owned bay ran a close third behind The Fugue (GB)(Dansili {GB}) and Magician (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Prince of Wales S. at Royal Ascot Wednesday. "She has had tests all over the place and they found she has got minor arthritis in her back," trainer Criquette Head-Maarek told PA Sport on Monday. "It means she will go away and have a rest for a few days, and then she'll come back and we'll start again. It's nothing serious." The G1 Prix Vermeille in September is the next target for the twice-beaten bay. She ran second in her seasonal debut in the G1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp behind Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}) Apr. 27. "Hopefully, she will be spot on [for the Arc],@ Al Shaqab Racing advisor Harry Herbert told At The Races. AIt shouldn't take long for her to get over this with treatment and recuperation and then go for the Vermeille. I'm sure she can come back and she will appreciate the ground for that more than the fast ground at Ascot and probably the trip as well, but she was never going at all last week." SARATOGA READIES FOR SEASON 146 By Mike Kane In his first season at Saratoga Race Course, Martin Panza is using a combination of less is more and bigger is better. Panza, the senior vice president of racing for the New York Racing Association, said Monday that he will reduce the overall number of races contested during the 40-day meet, while working to build the GI Whitney H. and GI Travers S. days into major events. The 146th season of racing at Saratoga begins Friday, July 18 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 1. The meet features 15 Grade I races and stakes purses of $17.5 million. At the annual Saratoga pre-season press conference at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion in Saratoga Springs, Panza said that that NYRA will run nine flat races on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 races on Fridays and the majority of the seven Sundays and 11 or 12 races in Saturdays. On the three Sundays the "Jockey Club Tour on Fox" will broadcast races from Saratoga, the card will have 11 or 12 races. As far as I know he's come out of the race fine and all roads lead to the King George. It was a terrific performance and to see him restore his reputation, not that he really needed to do that.@ Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Telescope collected last term=s G2 Great Voltigeur S. at York, but finished twice second to Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Gordon Richards S. and G3 Huxley S. ‘POWERS’ POINT TOWARD DARLEY JULY CUP David and Sabena Powers= G1 Royal Ascot sprintstars Sole Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) and Slade Power(Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) are on target for another try atthe G1 Darley July Cup over six furlongs at NewmarketJuly 12. Both successful at Royal Ascot, Sole Powerscored in Tuesday=s G1 King=s Stand S., while SladePower took the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. Saturday. "They are both going for it at the moment,@ said theirtrainer Eddie Lynam to At The Races. AThey are bothvery well. Sole Power was ridden out this morning,Slade Power was out as well and both are in great nick. There was only half a length between them last year [inthe G1 Darley July Cup]. I think Slade Power hasimproved. Sole Power didn't get things to go right forhim last year with his draw and he got messed aroundearly. The ground won't matter to Slade Power, whileSole Power would need good or faster to be at his best.If they are both well, they will both go there and trytheir best.@ In last year=s edition of the G1 Darley JulyCup, Slade Power ran third behind Lethal Force (Ire)(Dark Angel {Ire}). Sole Power was only a neck andhead behind to take fifth.

HIGH COURT UPHOLDS SPORTS BETTING BAN The United States Supreme Court has declined toreview a federal appeals court ruling which struck downNew Jersey=s bid for sports wagering. In 2011, NewJersey voters approved a referendum allowing sportsbetting in the state and, despite a 1992 federal lawbarring most states from licensing sports wagers, lawmakers enacted legislation to allow the gambling atthe state=s casinos and racetracks. The legislation waschallenged by the major professional sports leagues andthe National Collegiate Athletic Association. NewJersey Governor Chris Christie argued the federalstatute was unconstitutional, but his argument wasoverthrown by a federal appeals court last year. State senator Raymond Lesniak, who sponsored theoriginal legislation, pledged to continue the fight tolegalize sports betting. Lesniak introduced newlegislation Monday to repeal all laws against sportsbetting. AI expect that the U.S. Justice Department will refrainfrom intervening, as they have with Colorado andWashington when those states legalized marijuana,@Lesniak told The (Newark) Star Ledger. AI plan onplacing my first bet at Monmouth Racetrack on Sept. 8for the Giants to beat the spread against the Lions on>Monday Night Football.=@ Gov. Christie was less optimistic. AIt=s always a longshot to get certiorari from United States SupremeCourt,@ the governor told the Star Ledger. AThat=s theway it goes. They said no, so we have to move on.@

One thing=s for certain--that the Cheveley Park Studteam will never forget the 2014 Royal Ascot meeting. On a human level, managing director ChrisRichardson and his wife Annie were rewarded fordecades of generous service to Cheveley Park Stud inparticular and to the industry in general by being askedto be part of the Royal procession. On the racing front,David and Patricia Thompson=s Cheveley Park nurseryscored a notable victory when the homebred Dalakhanifilly Integral landed the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. Indoing so she went one better than her dam Echelon,runner-up in the equivalent race in 2006.

Integral=s victory came 16 years after her seconddam, Exclusive, had won the G1 Coronation S., sothree generations of this family have now performedwith distinction at the Royal meeting. It is a reminder of how long Cheveley Park has beenoperating at the top level that it was at Keeneland=s1987 November Sale that the stud bought Integral=sthird dam Exclusive Order, with David Minton bidding$825,000. To say she has proved a shrewd buy is aconsiderable understatement. Prior to Exclusive thedaughter of Exclusive Native had produced three stakeswinners to Sadler=s Wells, the last of them beingEntrepreneur, winner of the 2000 Guineas winner. Entrepreneur had earlier shared top price at the 1995yearling sales, with the other sale topper, remarkably, also coming from Cheveley Park. But it was the Cheveley Park stallions which madelast week so unforgettable for all concerned. Let=s startwith Pivotal, who could be described as the backboneof the operation. It is now 18 years since this CheveleyPark homebred gained his first important win, in theKing=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot, yet the 21-year-old sonof Polar Falcon--another Cheveley Park resident--is stillmaking his mark. Having covered 20 of the stud=sbroodmares this year, Pivotal added another importantwinner to his very long list, which extends to more than60 group/graded winners. The latest of these, EagleTop, looks poised to become his 22nd NorthernHemisphere Group 1 winner, judging by his impressivevictory in the G2 King Edward VII S.

SLADE POWER, c, 2009

Andrew Caulfield cont. One of Pivotal=s Group 1 winners, the championsprinter Kyllachy, dominated the latest edition of theKing=s Stand S., with his sons Sole Power and StepperPoint taking first and second in this Group 1, whichalso fell to Sole Power last year. Then, on the last of the five days, Dutch Art becamethe third member of the Cheveley Park roster to enjoygroup success, when Slade Power took the meeting=sother top sprint, the G1 Golden Jubilee. Little morethan half an hour later, Dutch Art added another,108,000 to his bankroll when Baccarat landed thehotly-contested Wokingham S. Then, at Haydock, anewcomer called Steve Prescott completed a hat-trickfor Dutch Art in a style which suggests he couldbecome another black-type performer for his popularsire. Dutch Art--himself a son of the Cheveley Parkresident Medicean--has been one of the success storiesof recent years. Even though Slade Power=s GoldenJubilee success was Dutch Art=s first at the Group 1level, the stallion=s fee had risen from ,5,000 in hisfourth season in 2011 to ,35,000 this year. The risewas no doubt partly a response to the prices achievedby some of the yearlings from his ,5,000 fourth crop. These included colts which sold for 270,000gns,i240,000 and i205,000. They averaged more than60,000gns. There was also strong demand for DutchArt=s fifth crop weanlings. Although sired at a fee of,12,000, seven of them sold for sums between100,000gns and 160,000gns, with Shadwell buyingtwo of them. Dutch Art=s current fee puts him among the top eightstallions in England--not bad going for a horse whohimself sold for 14,500gns as a weanling and16,000gns as a yearling. His value soared during hisunbeaten 2-year-old campaign, during which he twicechanged hands. The last sale was to Cheveley Park, after he had become a dual Group 1 winner in the PrixMorny and the Middle Park S. At that stage Dutch Art was third favorite for the2000 Guineas.

Unfortunately for his new owners, he went winlessthrough his second season but, in fact, his Timeformrating rose from 124 to 126 on the strength of asequence of high-class efforts. He stayed a mile wellenough to finish third of 24 in the 2000 Guineas and acreditable fourth in the G1 St James=s Palace S.However, his connections decided to drop him back tosprinting and were rewarded with good second-placeefforts in the G1 July Cup and G1 Prix Maurice deGheest. Bearing in mind that his second dam, the very usefulPalacegate Episode, gained all 11 of her wins over fivefurlongs, it seems fair to say that Dutch Art was at hisabsolute best over sprint distances. Consequently, itcomes as no surprise that his progeny have beenshining at up to a mile. None of his six group winners--four from his first cropand two from his second--has won a group race over adistance longer than a mile, though Caspar Netscher,Producer and Ladys First have all won at a mile.

Slade Power is clearly considered a pure sprinter, ashe has only once ventured beyond six furlongs duringan 18-race career which has yielded nine victories. Thisis despite having a dam and a second dam sired byversatile horses whose records included notable effortsbeyond a mile. His first dam, the five-furlong winner Girl Power, is byKey of Luck. This grandson of Danzig certainly didn=tlack speed, as he showed by winning the G3 Prixd=Arenberg over five furlongs as a 2-year-old. However, in a career severely hampered by injuries, the 5-year-old Key of Luck showed a very differentdimension to his talents. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlinin the UAE, he shone on Nad Al Sheba=s sand track. After carrying top weight to a 12-length success inrecord time over a mile and a quarter, he took the DubaiDuty Free by 20 lengths in the hands of Gary Stevens.Stevens later described Key of Luck as Aone of the mostbrilliant racehorses that I have been associated with.@ Key of Luck=s finest achievement as a stallion was tosire Alamshar, winner of the Irish Derby and the KingGeorge, but his broodmare daughters are proving mosteffective as the dams of sprinters and two of themhave now produced winners of the Diamond Jubilee, the other being the 2011 winner Society Rock. Marju, sire of the second dam Rumuz, would havebeen an easy winner of the 1991 Derby, had Generousnot been in the field, but he then reverted to a mile totake the St James=s Palace S. Rumuz came closest tosuccess over a mile and an eighth, but the next dam,the American-bred Balqis, was at her best as aprecocious 2-year-old sprinter. It should be exciting to chart Dutch Art=s progressfrom 2015 onwards, as his next three crops of racingage are the most expensive of his career, sired at,12,000, ,18,000 and ,35,000. The latest stud card from Cheveley Park shows that17 of the stud=s 132 broodmares visited Dutch Art thisyear, with nine of the 17 being daughters of Pivotal. The stud also has 14 Dutch Art yearlings and 16 foals,so it shouldn=t be long before Cheveley Park adds to itsown total of group winners by Dutch Art, whichcurrently stands at two--the Group 2 winners Garswood(out of a grand-daughter of Pivotal) and Producer.

Cont. from p1 That policy is designed to cut between 15 and 20 flatraces and provide shorter racing days. In 2013, whenNYRA staged 411 flat races and nine steeplechaseraces for a record 420, most of the weekday programshad at least 10 races. While trimming some flat races,Panza is adding three more steeplechase races, butrunning them prior to the 1p.m. Wednesday andThursday cards at 12:25 p.m. Wagering will beavailable on the steeplechase races, but they will not bepart of some of the longer multi-race bets. AI'm a firm believer that more is not necessarilybetter," Panza said. "We're trying to bring some qualityback to Saratoga, not that it was lacking, and we'll tryto write just a little different program this year with alittle higher class of races. And we'll try to run a littlebit less and let people get out to the town and enjoythe community of Saratoga. Nobody needs to be at theraces seven or eight hours a day. It's just too long." On the quality front, Panza said NYRA will eliminatesome of the lower-level claiming races, especially onthe turf, that have been part of the program in recentyears. During the winter, Panza joined NYRA, replacing P.J.Campo, after 21 years at Hollywood Park and stints atDel Mar and Santa Anita. One of his first moves atNYRA was to add stakes to the Belmont S. Dayprogram to make it into a major racing day regardless ofwhether the Triple Crown was on the line. CaliforniaChrome's quest for the Triple Crown sweep in theBelmont on June 7 attracted a crowd of over 102,000and the wagering in the card smashed NYRA's handlerecords. Panza said he wants to use a similar approach atSaratoga, taking a very good day and making it better. To that end, the Whitney purse was doubled to $1.5million--in an attempt to lure the top handicap runnersfrom across the country--and two Grade I's, the Testand the Alfred G. Vanderbilt were moved to theWhitney program. The initial objective, Panza said is toturn the Whitney into an early-season day that iscomparable to the Travers, always the biggestafternoon of the season. AWe'll take the Travers and we'll take the Whitneyand we'll try to make them national days,@ Panza said.AInstead of handling $40 million, we hope to behandling $80 million. We hope on those two days50,000 people show up at the track and that we givethem a good experience from a racing standpoint and aproduct standpoint and that they have fun in the city ofSaratoga Springs.@

STARLIGHT OFFERS CHARITABLE MATCH Starlight Racing, which recently lost graded stakeswinner Intense Holiday (Harlan=s Holiday) to laminitis, announced it will make sizeable donations to twoorganizations for the purpose of funding research intothe disease. Starlight will offer a matching-fundsdonation of up to $100,000 to be divided betweenGrayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation (earmarkedstrictly for laminitis research) and the AmericanAssociation of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) FoundationLaminitis Research Project. Both Grayson-Foundationand the AAEP Foundation are challenged with raisingmatching funds for their research projects. AOurimpetus to donate and raise money for this researchreally arose, not just from our loss, but from theoverwhelming outpouring of support from the racingcommunity,@ said Jack Wolf, founder of StarlightRacing. AWe heard hundreds of stories from peoplewho, like us, lost horses prematurely. While mostpeople know about Secretariat, Barbaro, and St.Nicholas Abbey losing their lives to laminitis, there aremany lesser known horses as well, including Glen HillFarms= Banned and so many other horses I=ve learnedabout over the last two weeks. The overarching themeI=ve heard has been enormous frustration with regard tolaminitis.@ Added Edward L. Bowen, president ofGrayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, AWe arevery sorry for Starlight=s loss, but admire that theirresponse is to help other horses. Laminitis has alwaysbeen a high priority for our Foundation, and although itremains an arch enemy, progress has been made. Forexample, recently developed knowledge on cryotherapy(the destruction of abnormal tissue through freezing)was utilized in saving Paynter, but every case isdifferent. Even though the team treating IntenseHoliday implemented a form of cryotherapy, in his case, with laminitis in both front feet, it could not save him. To make a donation, visit Grayson-Jockey ClubResearch Foundation or AAEP Foundation with a memoattached designating your donation for laminitisresearch in connection with Starlight=s donation.
