KATLYN FRENCH
Raising animals for show while maintaining high grades in schoolcan be a very daunting task for some people, especially a youngperson. Such is not the case for Texas Early College high schoolsenior, Katlyn French. Katlyn has been a member of 4-H for the past 4 years, and was involved in FFAprior to that. Her accomplishments include winning Reserve Grand Champion overall at a Jackpot show, and 1st Place in multiple shows throughout the East Texas area and Forth Worth. “Winning the jackpotshow was huge,” Katlyn said with a sly smile. Success is not something new to Katlyn, she achievedimmediate success from the first time she started showing. “The very first time I stepped into a showring I won with my chickens, and I have also had a lot of success showing pigs and, of course, my heiferand steer,” the beaming senior elaborated. “Winning in Fort Worth was the highlight of my life for sure,”she said. Showing animals is not all that Katlyn finds successful. Along with maintaining excellentgrades, she is an avid marksman hunting with bows and guns. “I have had a lot of success in shootingsports and I love to compete, it is a great outlet for me,” she said.
Faith in God and perseverance are two of the main driving forces behind her success, along withsupportive parents she said. “I can never repay or thank my parents for all they have done for me in mylive. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, not even close.”
Miss French plans to go to college in the fall in hopes of continuing her showing career and be involvedin the show cattle industry. If past performances are any indication of future success, the sky is the limitfor this vibrant young lady. Katlyn is currently set to graduate from TECHS with over 60 college hoursand an Associate’s degree in hand. If kids are indeed our future, we are in good hands with studentsand leaders like Miss French.

It’s been a great year of “firsts” for our club members, as many are new andtrying contests and projects for the very first time. In the County Fashion Show, for example, we had 7 members enter for the very first time and win in theircategories. Our club also had 7 members compete in the Farm City CakeShow. Great Job Everyone!!!
Our club made homemade thank-you cards and cookies for the Marshall Police Department tothank them for serving and protecting our community. We delivered these and toured their officeon April 23rd. The Lambs presented a program on Chickens in March, and Vicki Baker did aprogram on Drama at our April meeting.
We are going to Caldwell Zoo for a field trip on May 22nd, and we are also planning a record-bookworkshop in May. Our May meeting will be on the 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Extension office.
