COTNER LODGE RAISES THREE NEW MASTER

MASONS

Cotner Lodge was honored to raise three Fellow Craft Masons to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on Aug. 14. Brothers Carl Willert, Chuck Lewis, and Troy Myers traveled over a way that was extremely perilous. The Brethren of Cotner Lodge would like to congratulate these newest Master Masons and welcome them into the fraternity as full members!

COTNER LODGE HAS GONE TO THE DOGS

On Sat., Aug. 18, several Cotner Lodge Brethren attended a baseball game at Haymarket Park to watch the Lincoln Saltdogs take on the St. Joseph Blacksnakes. It was a great opportunity to enjoy fellowship with a few Brethren we haven’t seen in a while due to their work schedules conflicting with our Monday night meetings. The game was exciting and it was good to see Lincoln beat St. Jo 5 to 2!

HANDICAP ACCESSIBILITY

ENTRANCE UPDATE

Brother Jerry Pigsley, 2007 Cotner Lodge Tyler and President of the Cotner Temple Building Corporation, and his appointed accessibility committee consisting of members of Cotner Lodge and Columbia Chapter 275, O.E.S., have been working diligently to address the handicap accessibility needs of all who enter our build-ing. As a result, the Cotner Temple Building Corporation sent letters to all members of Cotner Lodge and Columbia Chapter seeking dona-tions to the vital and compassion-ate project. To date they received several donations including notes from people stating they felt the project was critical because they themselves fell or tripped while trying to climb the stairs to enter the building. Your donation of any amount will help us complete this long-overdue humanitarian mission.

We would like to thank the following people who have donated since the last issue of the Masonic News and as of the date this issue went to press: Frosty Critchfield Family, Helen Bailey, Eleanor Bailey, Rudge and Dottie Vifquain, Nancy Byerly, Lloyd Hinkley, Rog-er Turner, Tim Thimgan, Jr., Lucille Bingham, Brandi Allison, Thelma Hutchinson, Egan Fagerberg, Sr.,

Jerry Pigsley, and Patrick Barger. The design is in the fi-

nal stages and awaiting enough funds to begin construction.

The Cotner Temple Building Corporation continues to accept do-nations to raise money for this much needed and vital project. Please mail your check to Ralph Riemann, 3101 Fox Hollow Rd, Lincoln, NE 68516 or contact Jerry Pigs-ley at (402) 434-3000 for details.

WALKER “BUD” GRUTTIS PRESENTED

WITH 40 YEAR MASONIC SERvICE PIN

Although Worshipful Brother Bud Gruttis only recently joined Cotner Lodge, the Brethren of Cotner Lodge presented him with a long overdue 40 Year Masonic Service pin. Although W.B. Bud has been a Nebraska Mason for over 45 years, he never received a year pin until now. Congratulations W.B. Bud on a lifetime of active Masonry!

GRAND LODGE ENROLLMENT PROGRAM

A number of Cotner Lodge Brethren are planning to attend. A small charge for lunch will be taken at the door.

GRAND LODGE OF NEBRASKA 150TH

At 4:00 p.m. a Grand Procession of Masons will march from the Scottish Rite to the State Capitol rotunda where a ceremony will be conducted. Following the ceremony, cocktails will be served at 6:45 p.m. at the Lincoln Valley of the Scottish Rite with dinner to follow at 7:00 p.m.. COTNER LODGE vISITS BENNET LODGE

On Tues., Aug. 7, six Brothers from Cotner Lodge traveled to visit Bennet Lodge 94. It was a pleasure sitting with Worshipful Master Fred Liebers and Brethren of the lodge. Cotner Lodge is always pursuing opportunities to visit other lodges and meet or get re-acquainted with Brother Masons we have haven’t seen in a while. We always enjoy helping with degree work and filling any positions needed.

COTNER LODGE vISITS OMADI LODGE

On Sat., Aug. 25, four Cotner Lodge Brethren traveled to Omadi Lodge 5 in South Sioux City to enjoy an Entered Apprentice Degree for three candidates. Following the degree, our Cotner Lodge Brethren enjoyed a nice dinner at the Marina Inn Restaurant as guests of Omadi Lodge.

76 TROMBONES

Our own Most Worshipful Brother Jerry Rittenburg, who started the Masonic All-Star Marching Band, was honored during half time of the annual Shrine Bowl Football Classic. Over 200 high school students from all over Nebraska marched onto the field and spelled out the letters JERRY and played 76 Trombones as the announcer told about Jerry’s accomplishments. The picture of Jerry that hangs in our Lodge was shown on the television. What a fitting tribute to Jerry. His wife, Mary Alice, viewed the tribute from on top of the stadium in one of the sky boxes.

HOME AGAIN

Making his annual trek back home to the Cornhusker State was Maurice R. Hawthorne. Maurice came to the lodge on the occasion of our monthly potluck and business meeting. He was

introduced and given a warm welcome. Maurice has been a Master Mason for 43 years. He has dual membership in 210 and Lodge 141 in Wilburton, Oklahoma. He is a Past Master of Lodge 141 and the son-in-law of the late Cecil Ristau, a Past Master of 210.

LODGE BUSINESS

As usual, our Interim Secretary/Treasurer, Scott Dodge, had a complete Trestleboard laced with a bit of Masonic Humor. You need to come to the next monthly meeting, Sept. 6 and read a new statement of humor. Scott gave us a Quote Quiz: Who is the author of this quote? “Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.” Do you know? Come forward with your answer and see if you are correct.

A THOUGHT FOR YOU

W. A. Ward says: “Success is always started by the battery of ambition, and the spark plug of purpose. It is powered by the fuel of persistence, lubricated by the elbow grease of effort, guided by the steering wheel of common sense and smoothed by the shock absorbers of faith and forgiveness.

GRAND LODGE CELEBRATION

Our Grand Lodge of Nebraska

has announced a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that we all should plan to attend. It commemorates the founding of the Nebraska Grand Lodge 150 years ago in 1857. It’s called the Sesquicentennial Celebration and Memorial Service, and it will be held on Sat., Sep. 21, in the Capitol Rotunda at 4:00 p.m. All Masons of all Nebraska Lodges are summoned to attend and to gather at 3:45 at the Scottish Rite Temple. They will go in procession across K Street to the Capitol wearing white gloves, aprons, and jewels for Officers.

BANQUET TO FOLLOW

After an inspiring program

at the Capitol about our 150 years of Masonry in Nebraska, we’ll return to the Scottish Rite Temple for a delicious catered banquet.

Plan now to attend this important even in the history of Nebraska Masonry. Our Worshipful Master Virgil Meints has asked our Lincoln Lodge 19 to fill one or more tables at the banquet. Our Past Master Right Worshipful Bro. Reg Kuhn is Deputy Grand Master this year and likely will be Grand Master next year, so our Lodge should have a good turnout for this event to honor him as well as Grand Master Dean Skokan.

Reservations are necessary for the banquet but not for the ceremony at the Capitol. Banquet reservations are $15.00 and families and friends are welcome, so bring several. Send your checks to:

TABLE LODGE AND

PAST MASTERS NIGHT

Our annual Past Masters Night and Table Lodge are combined this year into an exciting evening on Tue., Oct. 16, at 6:30.

TABLE LODGE

A time-honored tradition in

Lodges of America and Britain

is the Table Lodge, an evening of toasts to Masonry, The Grand Master, the nation, and many other topics. Our Lodge will be formed in the Column of the South and the Column of the North, “commanded” by our Senior and Junior Wardens. After each toast, the Master will order our Stewards to fill the “cannons” (juice or wine glasses) with “powder” (juice or wine), followed by the toasting ritual. After many toasts from many Brothers, the toasts will end with the traditional Tyler’s toast in rhyming verse, “…happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again.”

PAST MASTERS NIGHT

Our annual sa lu te to

our Past Masters honors those Brothers who have led our Lodge through the years. They will be guests of our Lodge and will be honored with a special tribute.

MANUAL OF ARMS

To add to the military

atmosphere of our Table Lodge, a cadet from the Society of Pershing Rifles at UNL will perform an amazingly precise manual-of-arms demonstration with a 1905 Springfield rifle. Five cadets will perform the moving and sometimes heart-wrenching Prisoner of War/Missing In Action Ceremony with the table set for one, the empty chair and the symbolic single rose, inverted glass, etc.

The Society of Pershing Rifles is named for a famous Brother of Lincoln Lodge 19, Bro. and General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. He was a professor of military science at UNL in the 1890’s and organized the Varsity Rifles, later re-named for him. He later commanded the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.) in world War I in Europe and still later served as chief of staff of the Army. The Military and Naval Science building on the UNL City Campus recently was renamed for Bro. Pershing.

DEATH OF BRO. WILL

HURST

One of Lincoln’s most outstanding Masons died Aug. 8 at age 73. Although he was not a member of our Lodge at his death, he joined our Lodge and demitted in 1965 to Lancaster Lodge where he later served as Worshipful Master.

I specially remember W.B. Will because he served as Assoc. Editor of The Masonic News when I was Editor. He had an excellent grasp of English grammar, finding such editorial sins as dangling participles that I had missed. His widow, Dona, also helped with The News for many years.

W.B. Will’s Masonic record includes nearly every organization in our state. Too long to recite here, his list included high offices in Eastern Star, York Rite, Scottish Rite, DeMolay, and other organizations. His funeral nearly filled First-Plymouth Church with Masonic friends and his family.

NOTES ABOUT

BRETHREN

W.B. Andrew Louden was a substitute cohost with Jack Mitchell on the “KLIN Morning Show” on Aug. 1.

Our Secretary, W.B. Chuck Burk, took a trip to Canada in August, and W.B. Kurt Weiss’ job took him to Atlanta, GA, also in August.

I spotted our Bro. Drew Borske riding in a red convertible in the July 28 Shrine Bowl Parade in Havelock. He is Asst. Rabban in the Sesostris Shrine Temple.

DUES ARE DUE

Lodge dues were due Jan. 1.

Unpaid Brothers will be suspended by Grand Lodge on Sep. 30. Suspension in Lodge also means suspension in Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Mystic Shrine. Send dues to Sec. Chuck Burk, 1635 L St., Lincoln NE 68508-2304.

CATCH THE WAvE

Linco ln Assembly 6 , International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, participated in the Catch the Wave event held in Lincoln on July 29, to provide Nebraska Rainbow Girls ideas and tools for promoting the organization to potential new members.

Rainbow Girls and sponsoring adults had the opportunity to hear keynote speaker, Brady Beran of Lincoln, discuss his rehabilitation and challenges as he has recovered from a traumatic brain injury that occurred on Sep. 24, 2004, during a Lincoln East High School football game. Brady encouraged attendees to “never, never quit” as he discussed the Four F’s that helped him maintain his determination during rehabilitation “Family, Friends, Faith, and Football.”

The day-long event provided members the opportunity to discuss what Nebraska Rainbow for Girls is doing well and what needs to improve for Rainbow to grow and remain a strong member of the Masonic family. The importance of recruiting and retaining members, promoting Rainbow, working together with other Masonic youth groups, encouraging service, improving parental involvement, promoting communication, and having fun were some of the topics discussed. Members also learned of opportunities to receive recognition from the Grand Executive Board, as well as the “Dad” Walt Miller Award, for bringing in new members during the year. During the day, the Rainbow Ambassadors were honored for their support of Nebraska Rainbow. Ambassadors from Lincoln include Win Barber, Tim Birdsall, Don Jelinek, Greg Mason, and Ken Sieg. Lincoln Assembly would especially like to thank Karan Birdsall for her efforts in organizing the event and Temple Chapter 271 O.E.S. for serving lunch to the attendees.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Installation of Officers for Lincoln Assembly 6, International Order of Rainbow for Girls was held on Aug. 14 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Cassandra Birdsall was installed as Worthy Advisor for the upcoming term. STATED MEETING

It is hot out and it’s only getting hotter! The heat, however, didn’t stop our dedicated brothers and sisters of Starcraft Chapter from coming out to enjoy the company of each other. We had 24 members present which meant the sidelines were nicely filled - what a great sight! Worthy Matron Terri Sherman opened Chapter with a warming poem entitled “Strangers are Friends We Haven’t Met”. Our pro tem officers for the evening were Sis. Doris Foust – Chaplain, Bro. Carroll Foust – Warder, Bro. Chuck Godwin – Sentinel, Sis. Bev Ryba – Assoc. Matron,

Sis. Mary Kay Retzloff – Adah, and Sis. Shirley Marks – Electa.

W.M. Terri honored Past Masters of Masons which brought even more members to this months meeting. The Past Masters introduced included Bro. James Banister, Bro. Dennis Brydl, Bro. Charles Godwin, and Bro. Don Jelinek. A rose on the secretary’s desk was in honor of Bro. Jerry Rittenburg, Past Grand Master who passed away in January. Thank you to each of these gentlemen for their dedication to the Masonic organizations they support.

Business was conducted as usual with the following items to share; Worthy Patron Don Jelinek

gave a report on the Masonic All- Star band weekend at the Shrine Bowl. This year’s band was dedicated to the memory of Bro. Jerry Rittenburg and all of his years of hard work and devotion to the Masonic All-Star marching band.

District Grand Officers Visitation will be held on Aug. 25 and Starcraft Chapter is to provide three dozen cookies and spinach salads for lunch.

A reception honoring Sis. Mary Kay Retzloff will be held in October along with Martha Washington Chapter, more details to follow.

Friendship Night is scheduled in September be watching for details!

It was suggested that we may want to develop a “Membership Committee” to follow up with those members who are to be suspended.

Assoc. Conductress Alma Wilson reported that Sis. Marguerite Simmons was back in the hospital for two weeks and is now at Tabitha in hospice; Bro. Erik Hanson is home now and goes to the hospital everyday for shots; and Sis. Bonnie Mook is still at Tabitha and may get to go home in two weeks. Sis. Alma Melson’s death was reported, she passed away on July 29 and funeral services where held on Aug. 1.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

We applauded Sis. Mary Kay Retzloff who cut her beautiful long hair and donated it to “Locks of Love”. It was announced that Sis. Rachel and her husband Matt will be moving to Kansas City later this summer. W.M. Terri read from the Bible Romans 12 for the closing and the meeting was adjourned. Sis. Ruth Beach hosted the reception that followed and provided ice cream and watermelon that was enjoyed by everyone.

YEAR PINS PRESENTED

Aug. 7 was our meeting and two of our members were presented pins by Worshipful Master George Wright. Pictures of each were taken after each were presented with his pin. I enjoyed talking with them after the meeting, being the only one present close to their age. Those presented with pins were as follows: Bro. Alfred Campbell - 60 year and Bro. Robert Hall - 50 year.

We discussed many items at our August meeting. Some issues were decided and others will be dealt with at a later date.

THE LOSS OF AN OLD FRIEND

One of my oldest friends dropped the working tools from his hands July 29. You probably knew him as many did, “Elmer Owen”. He will be missed. His family has asked that memorials be sent in his memory to George Washington Lodge 250.

FISH FRY

As you read this message, our August fish fry has passed. The only one left for 2007 is Sep. 8. As you know, it will be a long and cold time before our next fish fry in April comes along so you better

not miss out on our Sep. 8. fish fry. It’ll be held at George Washington Lodge 250, 4430 North 70th Street..

Those who went to the August fish fry probably missed seeing Lydia and I. Lydia is recovering from surgery and, per doctors orders, she is not to lift anymore than 10 pounds. I figure the best way to make sure Lydia did not break the doctors rules, was to keep her home from the fish fry, as it would have been difficult to make sure she was not overdoing it!

A BAG OF TOOLS

Isn’t it strange how princes and kings,

and clowns that caper in sawdust rings,

and common people, like you and me,

are builders for eternity?

Each is given a list of rules;a shapeless mass; a bag

of tools.And each must fashion,

TO THE TEMPLE BOARD . . . WE SAY THANKS!

I still rent myself, so I can’t fully grasp all it takes to keep a building standing, but I know that home ownership is enough to make some people nervous. Utilities, insurance, taxes, and maintenance always know how to surprise you. So let’s recognize the New Masonic Temple Board and staff for keeping our L Street Temple in great shape. Thank you for your service to the Lincoln Masonic community.

THIS MONTH AT LIBERTY 300

The summer calm for Liberty 300 is over. September is full of activities in our lodge and in Lincoln Masonry. Our monthly potluck resumes on Thurs. Sep. 6. We dine at 6:15 p.m. and tyle the lodge for our business meeting at 7:00 p.m.. Let me especially invite our ladies and children. I don’t recall a potluck we’ve had without women and children present—so let your family join them.

Much needed degree work will occupy the evenings of Thurs. Sep. 13 and Thurs. Sep. 27. It takes bravery to face the unknown of a Masonic degree for the first time. Let’s show our candidates the respect they deserve by lining the lodge with supportive brethren!

On Thurs. Sep. 20 we stage

our annual Ladies at the Table dinner—another event for ladies to attend. In my understanding of Masonic history, dinners such as Table Lodge and Ladies at the Table are the core of Masonry—don’t skip this important event.

Finally, let me remind all Lincoln brethren that the Grand Master has summoned us to a special Sesquicentennial assembly on Fri. Sep. 21. We’re to wear suits, gloves, and full Masonic regalia. This sounds like a rare event in Nebraska Masonry; if you can possibly leave your usual vocations on this Friday afternoon, it will be an event not soon forgotten.

HUSKER CONCESSIONS AND HIGHWAY TRASH

PICK UP

I close by naming two more family events. One is a fund raiser, the second is volunteer work. Both are very popular and the time to get involved is now. Liberty 300 holds large responsibilities—and earns big money—manning a concession booth at Husker home football games. If you and your family want to be there, contact one of our lodge officers now since we slate teams for each game promptly.

Our highway trash pick up is the volunteer work. We’ll schedule a final pick-up of the season soon. Nebraska organizations wait in line to adopt a segment of our roads. Groups find it an active, social event, whose benefits can be seen at the end of a day’s work. Please join us.

Bro. Alfred Campbell received his 60 yr. pin on Aug. 7. That’s quite the accomplishment Bro. Alfred. Congratulations! George Wright Photo

STATED MEETING

The August meeting began with Worthy Matron Michelle Smith welcoming all in attendance.

The business meeting was short and sweet with a few reports of current activities.

The Annual Picnic was fun for the 20 or so who attended. Everyone ate under a large canopy of trees at Michelle’s parent’s acreage and enjoyed the trails on their property.

FISH FRY

The August Fish Fry is history so there is only one more left. We can always use additional assistance for set-up, breading of the fish or serving and cleaning up. If you have a few hours on Sat., Sep. 8 and would like to help, please call Worthy Matron Michelle Smith.

DISTRICT vISITATION

The District Visitation on Aug. 25 will be over by the time you read this but I’m sure it will be a great success.

ROAST BEEF DINNER

We are planning our annual Roast Beef dinner which will be Sun., Oct. 14. Look for more information

in the next Masonic News

Dr. Frederick Eiche ChapterScott Dodge, Chapter Advisor

1862 - NEWS FROM THE TRENCHES

DR. FREDERICK EICHE CHAPTER GOES TO

CONCLAvE AND WAR

The past summer months for Dr. Frederick Eiche (DFE) Chapter have been both busy and exciting.

CONCLAvE

July saw DFE Chapter marching to Conclave in Grand Island and to war as the first Nebraska Infantry Regiment, Grand Army of the Republic, as part of a civil war re-enactment.

CIvIL WARRE-ENACTMENT

The DeMolay recruits were gathered on the first day of Conclave after a tour of the Stuhr museum. Mustering of the new recruits began after an excellent chow consisting of a delicious barbecue. Prior to the beginning of training, our new recruits were instructed as to the history of the regiment as well as all the implements of modern warfare they would be instructed to utilize or suffer under while members of the Union or Confederate armies as part of this terrible war between our states.

After instruction, the real training began... Our DeMolay boys as well as their Sweethearts suffered brutally intense training which included close order drill, screaming drill sergeants, and even remedial training for a special few (see State Master Councilor Bryan Kehler on page 1). All training was conducted on the Grounds of the Museum which was later to be the site of a historic battle, brother facing brother, as the Nebraska 1st Infantry faced the newly formed Rebel Texan 5th Infantry division. We pause for a brief obituary:

Pvt. Dodge (“Dad Dodge”) died on July 20th during the battle of the Stuhr Museum. The battle was located near Grand Island in the Nebraska Territories. He fell as did many other of our Texan boys belonging to the 5th Infantry. They fell during an ambush by Yankees belonging to the 1st Nebraska Infantry. Those of our boys who were not killed outright were later either killed or captured. Pvt. Dodge is survived by his wife Lorie as well as their dog Sarah.

ELECTION OF STATE OFFICERS AND THE CHEvALIER DEGREE

The next day of conclave (Saturday) started with the regular business meeting and, more importantly, election of new state officers. Elected as State Master Councilor was our own Bryan Kehler. Elected as State Senior

Councilor was Ryan Grazier. Lastly, Travis Bader was elected State Junior Councilor winning out over DFE Chapter’s David Shadoin after and hour of voting and more than 5 tie votes. After the grueling voting, the Chevalier ceremony was presented. The Chevalier degree is presented to those DeMolays who have performed extraordinary service to DeMolay. Both Mitch Werner and David Shadoin of DFE Chapter received this honor and were made Chevalier DeMolays.

“ISLAND OASIS”, BANQUET, AND DANCE

That afternoon saw everyone at the “Island Oasis” water park for an enjoyable time. Some chose the “wave pool” or the “Lazy River”, while the more adventurous types (including Dad Dodge & Dad Werner) chose the six story speed slides including both the “Island Falls” and “Fury of the Island”.

“ F u r y o f t h e Island” Water Slide

T h e “ L a z y R i v e r ”

Later that evening was the first banquet with the installation of State Senior Councilor Bryan Kehler as the 88th Nebraska state Master Councilor. At the banquet both the food and the fellowship was second to none.

Ending the evening was the dance and the crowning of the 2007-2008 Nebraska DeMolay State Sweetheart. Anticipation and excitement were in the air as the competing Chapter Sweethearts were lined up. The suspense was heightened to the tune of Jeopardy as Miss Kelli Ferguson was finally selected and crowned as the new DeMolay State Sweetheart.

AWARDS, INITIATION, AND ADIEUS...

All good things must finally come to an end. Sunday saw a state wide full initiation for 5 new DeMolays from various chapters as well as the presentation of awards for the ritual competition. Lastly, and sadly, it was time to say goodbye to all our friends and make the long trek back to Lincoln.

Bryan Kehler, son of Kristi Ohm was installed as the 88th Nebraska DeMolay State Master Councilor at Nebraska DeMolay’s annual conclave held July 20-22 in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Bryan is a recent graduate of Lincoln Northeast High school;

a past Master Councilor of DFE Chapter of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a Past Master Councilor Meritorious Service Award winner.

As State Master Councilor, Bryan’s theme for his term is “Membership Evolved” and includes an incentive program based around the popular “Halo II” video game to increase membership in Nebraska DeMolay. As popular as this game is, his program will assuredly and definitely be a success. Congratulations Bryan!

Bryan Kehler, 88th State Master Councillor.

TUBING THE REPUBLICAN RIvER

August saw the Chapter heading down to Harlan County Reservoir to tube the Republican River and camp. The Chapter left Fri. Aug. 3 and returned to Lincoln on Sun. Aug. 5. This adventure will be the war story for the Chapter record books. Despite the low river, the reeds and swamp grass, the blazing sun, and subsequent sun burn, the camping was fun and the Chapter left the next day right before it started to rain. The great Mexican food that we had at “Little Mexico” helped make up for some of the sun burn on Saturday and on Sunday, Dad Weers even caught a 14” Bass. Good going Darrel!

CAR WASH WITH BETHEL 27

Sat. Aug. 11 saw the Chapter holding a joint car wash with Bethel 27 at the Masonic Temple, 1635 L Street. After all the water fights, a few cars may have been washed. Even so, a fun time was had by all.

OMAHA BACK TO SCHOOL BASH

Fri., Aug. 17 saw the Chapter road tripping to Omaha for the “Back to School Bash” held at the Tangier’s Shrine Center in Omaha. The trip up was fun as everyone in both cars were pointing fingers at each other as we traveled through an abnormally smelly stretch of road outside Omaha. The “Fart Jokes” were definitely a flying! All those who attended and danced reported having a good time.
