D/CITY CINEMA
A man with a sense of style — and the confidence to convey it — is a rare breed, but thankfully, there are plenty of gentlemen helping to elevate Washington’s style status. Whether they happen to be nouveau dandies or old-school prepsters, the fellas who know what they like and show it have earned a well-deserved hat tip from us.

In the words of the immortal James Brown, this is a man’s world – and the neighborhood of 14th & Shaw might as well be the center of the universe. From the city’s best new bars to top-notch shops for upgrading your closet, this is where every well-dressed, well-groomed, well-read man wants to be.
Ready to outfit your inner mountain man? Head to Federal (2216 14th Street NW; 202.518.3375) to shop clothing from Gitman Bros. Vintage, Pendleton, & Raleigh Denim. Round out your new duds with shoes from Red Wing Heritage, a backpack from Herschel Supply Co., or some Shuron shades.
A new 6-screen Landmark Theatre is set to debut in late 2015 as part of the Atlantic Plumbing develop-ment at 8th and V streets NW. Like Landmark’s other cinemas, this one promises all the bells and whistles, including luxury seating and an indoor-outdoor cafe.
If you resolved to get fit in 2014, you’ll want to head to Universal Gear (1919C 14th Street NW; 202.319.0136) to score a new swimsuit that shows off your hard work. Expect teeny briefs, standard board shorts, and everything in between.
The heritage-minded folks at Mutiny (52 O Street NW; 202.500.8680) have been peddling quality mens- wear and accessories for years via a web shop and a small installation inside Redeem. A new showroom inside the 52 O Street artist studios means you can shop by appointment and scope the full inventory.

If you’re looking for the sartorial pot of gold, you’ll find it where the rainbow ends — right at 14th & Shaw. From prepsters with an affinity for color to traditionalists with leading-man appeal, the fellas you’ll spy out and about in this neighborhood are purposeful, thoughtful dressers. Take a gander at their top-notch spring ensembles, and feel free to steal a style tip or two for yourself. After all, imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

Springtime in D.C. is a beautiful thing (cherry blossoms, anyone?). But, a definite highlight this year is the first-ever Funk Parade on U Street — an all-out, all-day
music festival featuring some of the neighborhood’s best local acts & businesses.
We caught up with the event’s cofounder, Justin Rood, to get the inside scoop on
what to expect. The coolest part? The idea came to him in a dream.
Read on for the full story!
WHAT FASHION
MISTAKES ARE
D.C. MEN MAKING?
...
“Many gentlemen in D.C. forget to take pride in and ownership of the fitment of their suits, and don’t take
advantage of building a close relationship with a tailor. Nothing elevates a man’s soul like wearing a suit knowing that it was purchased with intelligence, cut and sewn with
care, and worn as one to whom details matter.”FREDDY REYES JR., CREATIVE DIRECTOR, THE TRAVELING GENT
There is definitely a niche of stylish men in D.C.
who would stand out in any city. However, so many men are caught in the daily rut of just working that they completely neglect the notion
of expressing yourself through what you wear.
BRITT ELYSE NELSON, FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER
I’m allergic to those leather shoes that are part sneaker, part formal shoe that some men wear.
I know it seems practical but it’s just lazy. I wish men in D.C. would accessorize more. A hat, bracelet,
or colored sock goes a long way.NICOLE AGUIRRE, FOUNDER, WORN CREATIVE
ELIOT PAYNE, MENSWEAR DESIGNER
Tip: Take your favoritepair of pants to the
tailor. One pair. After the compliments roll in, you’ll take others.
Slightly more advanced tip: I’ve learned that
guys are often a jacket size smaller than a
salesperson told them. Give it a try next time!
Although people are making more of an effort to leave the
house in something slightly lessdrab, they still can’t figure out where to buy a decent pair of shoes. Yes, I’m talking about
you, the one in the khakis and black square-toe shoes.”
“CHEAP, SLOUCHY LEATHER JACKETS ARE THE WORST...”
DAN KAHOE, OWNER, GOODWOOD
“PEACOATS IN THE CLUB. REALLY. IT
LOOKS LIKE THEY GO STRAIGHT FROM
WORK TO THE DANCE FLOOR. LIKE THEY’RE THERE TO
FILL OUT A W-9.”RORY O’CONNOR, PRODUCER
AND MUSICIAN
“WELL-TAILORED CLOTHES CAN
TAKE A MAN FROM A 7 TO A 10. THINK BRADLEY COOPER IN THE HANGOVER, NOT STEVE CARELL FROM THE OFFICE.
IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY
YOU SPEND — IF YOUR CLOTHES
DON’T FIT PROPERLY, YOU’LL LACK
SOPHISTICATION AND STYLE.”
LIZA COLLIS, ASSISTANT STORE DIRECTOR,
BILLY REID
ALEX FAWCETT, INTERIOR DECORATOR AND
MENSWEAR CURATOR

a killer trifecta: cold beers, shots, & hot dogs (served Chicago-style

Q: Tell us a little bit about your background. A: I was born and raised here, in Washington, D.C. My home
is at 13th and U, and I love the neighborhood. All of the live music, the jazz, and the dancing. It's the best neighborhood in the city.
Q: So how and when did you think of the idea to start a Funk Parade on U Street?
A: A couple of years ago, I went to sleep and had a dream, and in the dream, there was this parade. Filled with musicians and dancers and my neighbors, and people came to the neighborhood and came out of their houses and joined this parade on foot and brought the parade and the crowd back to U Street. That ticked off an evening of music and cele- bration for the neighborhood and the city. I woke up and couldn’t understand why this wasn’t already happening.
I started reaching out to friends and people who connected me to other people, and eventually found Chris Naoum at Think Local First, which exists to support local musicians and support their audiences. That started the ball rolling.
Q: What aspect of the day are you most excited about?A: I think this event has the opportunity to bring people together
from all corners of the city and all walks of life, [to] find something in common in the music they love. And I think seeing that happen would be the best thing in the world.
Q: What can people expect?A: Chris and I thought it was a great idea and really resonated
with the spirit of the neighborhood and the city, but we wanted to see what other folks thought. We started speaking with local business and community groups, and everybody was wildly supportive. So, Ben’s Chili Bowl joined; [then] the U Street Neighborhood Association, the Howard Theater, Black Cat, Twins Jazz, Tropicalia, Blind Dog Cafe, & The Brixton. And then we went to the [Advisory Neighborhood Commission]. Every neighborhood has one. It’s a very important voice of the community in determining what happens in the area. They unanimously supported the event & thought it was a great idea. Council member Jim Graham has been a huge supporter from the beginning. And so we've been working with all these folks to put together a phenom-enal series of events for Saturday, May 3.
Q: What do you want people to say about it when it’s over?A: I hope that they see something they’ve never seen before;
meet somebody they’ve never met; and discover something they share that they didn’t know they shared.
DC Funk Parade co-founders Chris Naoum (L) & Justin Rood (R).

ONE BY FOURThink Washington’s men are limited to just one look?
Think again. Here, one brave fellow gets the makeover experience from four of D.C.’s coolest retailers.
Derek Brown is D.C.’s poster boy for craft cocktails and innovative, creative drinking establishments. With a resume that includes The Passenger and Columbia Room, Brown has taken over Shaw recently, opening a trio of watering holes in less than a year. The first in the trifecta, Mockingbird Hill, specializes in two things : ham and sherry. And Brown is clearly on to something — the Ninth Street hotspot draws adventurous epicureans from all over the city. Read on as we get to the bottom of Brown’s obsession.
Q : You’ve been asked “Why sherry?” a million times. Our question: “Why sherry now?”A : In a funny way, there’s no right moment to introduce a concept that’s different. Some people may wait for that magic moment, but if we love something, we put it out there in the world and make an argument for why it’s good. Sherry has been threatening to come back for 10 years, and it never really has, at least not to this point. One caveat to that, though: I do think that the interest on the part of bartenders in making sherry cocktails has definitely helped a lot.
Q : Is D.C. proving to be a sherry town?A : D.C. is undoubtedly a sherry town. I think the reason for that is that it’s a smart town, full of well-traveled and thoughtful people, and they’re wiling to try new things.
Q: Tell us a bit about the menu. Why does ham go so well with sherry?A : It’s wonderful because sherry’s very dry— a lot of people think of it as sweet, but the vast

majority is dry. There’s a good connection with the tartness and zippy finish of the sherry with the saltiness of the ham. They have certain phenolic compounds in common. With the snacks at Mockingbird Hill, it’s not all ham — we have some vegetarian options, too, It’s just geared to be stuff that tastes really good with
sherry — things like goat cheese from Maryland served with
local honey and coffee grinds.
Q: What facts should the uninitiated know about sherry before they try it?A : It is a wine, but it’s not quite like most wines. Don’t expect it to taste like your average white wine — it’s more complex than that. And decide whether you want dry or sweet sherry.
Q : When did you first fall in love with sherry?A : I guess about seven or eight years ago. I tasted it in a wine captain’s class I was taking, and since then it’s been like a song I’ve had stuck in my head.
Q : How do you like to drink it?A : Straight. Just fino and ham.
Q : What’s the best way to work sherry into ahome bar setup?A : There are great cocktail recipes, but I think they should get two sherrys to start out. A fino sherry like Tio Pepe is good and easy to find. And then they should either get a cream sherry if they like it slightly sweeter, or an oloroso from Lustau if they like it dry.
