A Foundation funding a foundation was good news today for the Friends of Beaverdams Church. A donation by a charitable Foundation will help cover expenses for the structural foundation of the historic Beaverdams Church in Thorold. The Ontario Paper Thorold Foundation presented a $25,000 cheque to the Friends of Beaverdams Church on February 10. The donation will go toward masonry repairs on the building’s foundation. External renovations to the building constructed in 1832 are expected to cost approximately $60,000. The external renovation list includes installation of new windows, clapboard repairs or replacement, among other work required over the next 4 to 5 years. After the exterior of the building is restored, the Friends’ focus will turn to the interior of the Church located on Marlatts Road. The historic church was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1994.

Club Capri’s first wedding showcase on February 28 in Thorold was like a one stop shop for couples planning their dream day. Club Capri Event Coordinator Lorette Garofalo produced the show to match up local wedding specialists with couples planning their celebration of marriage. The event also offered the visitors a tour of the beautifully decorated banquet centre, and a food tasting to sample the delicious culinary creations by acclaimed Chef Pat. There is a Thorold connection to the Have-a-Heart Campaign by Advanced Chiropractic Clinic in February. Members of the Clinic’s staff have roots in Thorold including Dr. Domenic Pantano, son of Mario the barber on Front Street, and Laura Micevic (Mannell), a Thorold Secondary School and Brock University graduate.

“Every February our office helps to contribute to the Have-a-Heart campaign. The campaign is usually for one week only, but this year the doctors have extended it for an extra week so we can hopefully raise more money than we ever have in the past,” said Laura.

For a 2-week campaign in February, doctors at the Niagara Falls based Clinic donated their services to patients making a minimum $20 donation to the Oklahaven

Children’s Chiropractic Centre. A non-profit centre based in Based in Oklahoma City, Oklahaven provides chiropractic care for children in need but are unable to afford professional healthcare services.

Patients received carnations as random acts of kindness during the annual event at the local Clinic located on 4838 Dorchester Road in Niagara Falls.

HERITAGE THOROLD BUILDING RECOGNITION PROGRAM• The Munro House• Dominion Government BuildingHeritage Thorold has taken steps to begin a recognition program for owners of designated buildings. Heritage Week in Thorold was celebrat-ed during the third week in February. This year at the Thorold Council meeting of February 16th, the owners of two designated properties were recognized.

One of the mandates of a Municipal Heritage Committee is education and each year, during Heritage Week, Heritage Thorold donates books to our local library, as well as a yearly membership/subscription to Heri-tage magazine which is published by The National Trust for Canada. The books by the group deal with our cultural, natural or built heritage.

The slogan this year for Pharmacist Awareness Month in Canada is “Pharmacists, doing more, for you.” When it comes to pharmacists in Thorold, the slogan has actually been a truism exemplified by Henderson’s Pharmacy, serving our community since 1939.

March is Pharmacist Awareness Month (PAM) in Canada, a month long period to celebrate and ed-ucate Canadians about the contribution that phar-macists make in the delivery of health care. This year the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is celebrating the changing role of pharmacists with the theme: Pharmacists: Doing more. For you.

“Pharmacists across Canada have had a widely expanded scope of practice in the past ten years,” said Carlo Berardi, Chair, Canadian Pharmacists As-sociation. “From renewing prescriptions, delivering vaccinations, provid-ing medication management services and prescribing for minor ailments and conditions, Canada’s pharmacists are doing more for their patients.”

Pharmacist Awareness Month provides a key opportunity to inform and educate patients and all Canadians about the significant strides that phar-macists have made in their ability to deliver patient-centred care. It’s also an opportunity to highlight the essential role that pharmacists play in our health care system.

Look for new reports and studies throughout March highlighting the vital role of pharmacists in our health care system and in the lives of Canadians.

SPORTS RUNWAY OF RECOGNITION The 10th annual Thorold Sports Runway of Recognition event will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at Club Capri, 36 Cleveland St. The ceremony will honour the 2016 inductees to the local Runway of Recognition.

Tickets may be purchased at the Thorold Community Credit Union (63 Front St. S.) at the cost of $20.00. Cocktail service will open at 5:30 p.m. followed by a pasta dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by an awards presentation.
