    L" #$aluation for the Other %eam& 'n (hich ' get to be a Cynical )er* for a +rade

%he debate ' ,atched ,as bet,een -en %rans team and Ale Phams team. A

coin ,as flipped to determine ,ho ,ould go first and -en decided to argue for the

affirmati$e side thus ma*ing Ales team the negati$e. 1he basically resol$es that social

net,or*ing has a negati$e impact on society and ' belie$e she implied it should be done

a,ay ,ith for good. -ens team split up their case bet,een the members ,ith each

reading the same amount of information. 2or Ales group i$ian read their case for

them and ,al*ed around the room doing so. -ens group lac*ed emotion ,ithin their

,ords but they made up for it ,ith bountiful and accurate information. 1he ,as concise

and her argument ,as incredibly strong and attributed most of her information to reliable

sources and statistics. Ales group on the other hand didnt ecel much in that

department but they had ,a$es of charisma and passion rolling off of them ma*ing it

easy to sympathise ,ith their side. 'n addition their transitions bet,een their contentions

flo,ed really ,ell. %he negati$e as*ed really good uestions and ,ere really efficient in

bac*ing up their argument in their rebuttal but they did made the mista*e of not directly

rebutting the affirmati$es contentions. -en noticed this and pointed it out. 1he included

current e$ents from around the ,orld to ma*e her argument stronger. 5oth sides had

difficulty finding an eual definition for particular terms in the prompt and they both

focused on different aspects of social net,or*ing and its impact on society.

' felt that the strongest debater ,as -en %ran. 6o,e$er Ale Pham came

really close. -en used a sufficient amount of reliable sources to bac* up her argument

paraphrased them efficiently deli$ered her information in a concise and sophisticated

manner and she lac*ed insecurity ,ithin her ,ords. 1he appealed to the audience ,ith

ethos and pathos gi$ing eamples of ho, social net,or*ing has hurt people through

cyberbullying and ,hatnot. %hough morality is hard to pinpoint do,n she did it

efficiently ,ith enough e$idence to hold up her argument.

' do not *no, the name of the person ' thought ,as the ,ea*est debater 7'm

sorry 'm a 8er* ' *no,9 but it ,as one of the girls on the affirmati$e side. 1did help

-en to bac* up their arguments but she ,as ,ea* at some spots because she relied more

on her sources and ,as essentially 8ust paraphrasing tet e$idence more than she ,as

arguing. 1he does seem to understand the prompt really ,ell but she seemed to lac*

confidence ,ithin her o,n abilities thus she tried to play it a little too safe.
