It has been a busy week with lots of great learning going on across the school. However, as you will already be aware we sadly had to send our Year 6 bubble home this week who will now self-isolate until their return. The school is certainly feeling much quieter for not having our Year 1 and Year 6 pupils in school. We look forward to seeing you all back soon and having a full school once again.

A huge thank you goes out to our parents and carers at this time, it has not been a great feeling as a headteacher having to send children home, but I have felt very heartened to hear how eagerly the children and their parents have been engaging in the Home Learning set, this will have a huge impact and support the students for when they return. I know many parents have been asking about using TEAMS for lessons or visual contact with the class teacher, this is something that we are working very hard with Ark to achieve and hope to have TEAMS up and running across all year groups in the near future.

Day to Day Enquiries If you have any questions e.g. to check when your child has PE and needs their kit, you can send any enquiries to your child’s year team via the info@ address on the home learning page.

So for example if your child is in Year 6 you will need to visit the Home Learning page where you find the email addresses listed which will look like: [email protected]. The teachers will aim to answer your questions as speedily as possible.

Covid 19 symptoms:

• a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

• a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

• a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If your child has any of the listed systems above, please let the office know.

If a member of your household tests positive it is very important that you inform the school and keep all children in family at home for 14 days. If you had Covid like symptoms and received a negative test result, you and your children are able to return to normal once you feel well again. You only need to have a test if you are experiencing Covid symptoms, please follow the government guidance if you are unsure.

Self-isolation means stay at home and do not leave the house for 14 days.

• do not go to work, school or public places – work from home if you can

• do not go on public transport or use taxis

• do not go out to get food and medicine – order it online or by phone, or ask someone to bring it to your home

• do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family – except for people providing essential care

• do not go out to exercise – exercise at home or in your garden, if you have one

This guidance for educational settings indicates who can get a test, local test sites, and how to book your test. It is vital that educational settings only recommend children to get a test if they develop coronavirus symptoms. These are:

• a high temperature • a new, continuous cough • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

Should children require a test there are two local testing sites, as well as those situated in our neighbouring boroughs.

• Mildmay Road Car Park, open 8am-8pm 7 days a week. • A Mobile Testing Unit routinely visits Gants Hill. The next dates are 15, 18, 21,

24, 26 and 30 September.

All test sites are government run and appointment only. They can be booked through the online national system.

Book your test here: https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test. If you are a member of staff you are an essential worker and can indicate that when booking. This will prioritise your appointment. onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/coronavirus/test

Black Hero of the WeekThroughout Black History Month the children will be learning about a Black Hero in history each week who will feature in our newsletters and we encourage the children to use their discovery skills by clicking on the links below to find our more information about our heroes. As you may be aware, one of our Year 6 classes has been named Johnson class after the famous American mathematician Katherine Johnson.

Katherine Johnson loved maths. Early in her career, she was called a “computer.” She helped NASA put an astronaut into orbit around Earth. And then she helped put a man on the Moon! Ms Johnson died earlier this year at the age of 101.

Black Music of the Week

In recognition and to celebrate Black History Month we will be listening to the music of a different black composer or music each week. Next week we will be

listening to and learning about The Buena Vista Social Club. As a suggested activity to support at home, you could gather some facts about Simone in preparation for

the coming week. http://www.buenavistasocialclub.com/

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be in-troduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certifi-cate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

At School • We make our lessons as fun and interactive every day so that every child loves

learning and have a sense of enthusiasm with everything they do. Our lessons are very hands on and we ask the children to share their learning with the ‘talk partners’.

• We talk to the children about looking out for the details on things around them, to look closely at the bugs and the leaves in the playground and what happens to everything as the seasons change. We encourage the children to check their work and try to spot any errors they may have made.

• Through our topic approach we engender a sense of curiosity and wonder in the children where they are keen to go home and find out more. We talk about human characteristics and traits and what makes us all the same but equally what makes us different and that it is good to have differences and to appreciate them with an open mind.

• Every area of the curriculum helps the children to become more creative –either through role-play, stories, music and PE – helping the children to use their imaginations.

At Home• Encourage your child to use their imagination by making up stories together, or

suggesting ways in which they could change parts of a story they know well, either change the gender of the characters, have them go on a different adventure etc. Pupils love to role play different characters and it is often even more fun when the adults join in too. Play along and have fun!

• Play games with your child like ‘I spy’ where you can see how many things they can notice beginning with a certain sound or letter they may already know or ask your child to think about an object and describe it using powerful adjectives. Ask questions like ‘I wonder what would happen if…?’ or ‘what do you think might happen if?’ or ‘why do you think…? These types of deeper questions will encourage the children to use their creativity and imagination more fully.

• Either independently or with help, encourage your child to read or research more information around the topics they have been studying in class. The children could also spend time researching our current composer.
