ACCREDITATION STATEMENT
The ICJR Direct Anterior Approach THA Course, Innsbruck, Austria, 31/01/2019-02/02/2019 has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) with 18 European CME credits (ECMEC®s). Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
Through an agreement between the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME® credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Information on the process to convert EACCME® credit to AMA credit can be found at www.ama-assn.org/education/earn-credit-participation-international-activities.
Live educational activities, occurring outside of Canada, recognized by the UEMS-EACCME® for ECMEC®s are deemed to be Accredited Group Learning Activities (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Direct Anterior Approach THA Course has also been determined to be COMPLIANT by Ethical Medtech. The approval decision is posted at www.ethicalmedtech.eu.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Identify key areas of the direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgical procedure such as locating the interval between tensor fasciae latae and sartorius, ligating the lateral femoral circumflex vessels, mobilizing and elevating the femur to ream the distal canal, and correctly positioning the cup.
• Compare and evaluate the design rationales, clinical outcomes, and features of different hip implants for their appropriate use in the direct anterior hip approach for THA.
• Evaluate, discuss, and compare technologies that may be used to facilitate anterior hip THA surgery including specialized instrumentation, surgical tables, and computer navigation.
• Discuss the patient selection criteria used to appropriately identify potential direct anterior hip THA patients for both primary and revision surgery including identification of contraindications.
• Identify and discuss perioperative treatment protocols specifically related to the anterior approach for THA, including pain management, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis, control of bleeding, prevention and management of infection, and rehabilitation, including the roles of staff through each of these steps.
• Discuss and compare the clinical outcomes for anterior approach THA versus traditional THA when considering such factors as length of stay, rehabilitation, postoperative restrictions, occurrence of infection and DVT, pain management, and return to activities of daily living.
• Discuss key surgical steps for performing revision THA through the anterior approach including extensile skin incisions, removal of acetabular components, use of grafts for defects in the acetabulum, and the removal of well-fixed femoral components using a proximal or distal osteotomy.
