In addition, the remembrance of the SS Mendi disaster in 1917 and its subsequent mythological dimensions are assessed, as are the notions of a presumed Cape Corps military tradition.

Cape Baroque and the contribution of Anton ReithHans FransenIn this book published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch under the Rapid Access Publishers imprint, the author investigates whether, and to what extent, the surprisingly rich body of Cape material culture – the decorative gables of its homesteads, the city mansions with their ornate entrances and cornices, the superbly crafted armoires – can be seen as an integral part of international Baroque: that ebullient style of painting, architecture and design that swept across Europe and some of its spheres of influence.

Occupational Hygiene – Drs JJ Schoeman and DJ van den Heever (Eds.), on behalf of NERSHCO (National Education, Research, Safety & Health Consultancy) and VDH Industrial Hygiene CC.

SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein designed and produced a unique folder for the Hotel School at the Central University of Technology (CUT). The folder also serves as the Hotel School’s newsletter, setting out an overview of activities and news highlights for students and interested parties alike.

WAR AND SOCIETY: Participation and remembrance – Albert GrundlinghIn War and Society, published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, Professor Grundlingh examines the impact that the First World War had on black participants from South Africa, and their reasons for joining. The book is an important contribution to a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the war on all of society. War and Society was launched at the SU Museum on 24 February.

A PLACE TO LIVE: Red Location and its history from 1903 to 2013 – Vuyisile MsilaThe launch for A Place to Live was held on the 19th of February in Port Elizabeth. It was hosted by Fogarty’s Bookshop and covered by SABC1 News. The event was attended by almost 50 guests and the response was extremely positive, with almost everyone purchasing a copy. A Place to Live is published by SUN MeDIA Metro.

IN SEARCH OF HUMAN DIGNITY: Essays in Theology, Ethics and Education – Karen SporreIn Search of Human Dignity was launched at the SU Faculty of Theology on 12 March. Karen Sporre (Umeå University) examines the cultivation of human dignity from the perspectives of theology, ethics and education. The book is a joint publication between Waxmann in Germany and SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch.

ICONS – IMAGING THE UNSEEN: On Beauty and Healing of Life, Body and Soul – Daniël LouwProf Daniël Louw discussed art and spirituality from his new book, Icons: Imaging the unseen, at the Stellenbosch University (SU) Museum on 25 February. The event was organised by the Stellenbosch Arts Association, and the audience was very appreciative of Prof Louw’s incisive perspectives on the vital importance of aesthetics and transcendence in human flourishing. Icons is published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch.

SUN MeDIA BOOK PRIZE AWARDEDLiezel Meintjes from SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein presented the SUN MeDIA Book Prize to the best student in Brand Management, Ms LE Mohanoe, on Thursday 16 April during the University of the Free State’s Faculty of Humanities student prize-giving ceremony.

SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL OF SCIENCEThe South African Journal of Science is a multidisciplinary science journal published bimonthly by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). Their mandate is to publish original research with an interdisciplinary or regional focus and to provide a forum for discussion of news and developments in research and higher education. SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein has been responsible for the production of this journal for more than two years.

#DISCOURSECAFÉ/#DISKOERSKAFEE LAUNCH#DiscourseCafé/#Diskoerskafee was successfully launched by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch and the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Institute on Wednesday 15 April. The book is a first for the Institute and contains 19 essays by 17 promising young writers (current or former Maties), based on discussions with some of South Africa’s most notable thought leaders.

Die fokus lê op die voorbereiding van die student om die beginsels van die informele onderrigbenadering te verstaan en te implementeer. Die ontwerp, uitleg en produksie van Graad R in Perspektief is deur SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch gedoen.

CULTIVATING SEEDS OF HOPE – Murray Coetzee, Retief Muller, Len Hansen (Editors)Cultivating Seeds of Hope is a collection of 40 oral testimonies about Beyers Naudé, but also about the apartheid era in general and about the role that Christianity played in that period. In addition to an abundance of insights on Beyers Naudé by those who knew him best, it offers perspectives on the movements and entities that Naudé associated himself with. The book is published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch.

LAW AND RELIGION – Pieter Coertzen, M Christiaan Green, Len Hansen (Editors)In our time the study of law and religion is emerging as a wide-ranging and vital academic field, with increasingly urgent implications for society at large. Lying at the intersection of a variety of other disciplines – law, theology, religious studies, political science, sociology and anthropology, to name only the most obvious – the field of law and religion is generating a burgeoning volume of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and study. Law and Religion is a Conference RAP publication from SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch.

COMPENDIUM OF KEY INTERNATIONAL INSTRUMENTS – G Mpedi & M Nyeti (Editors)SUN MeDIA MeTRO produced this Compendium for the Centre for International and Comparative Labour and Social Security Law (CICLAS). The book comprises a variety of key documents on social security and related themes adopted by the United Nations and one of its specialised agencies, to serve as a useful tool for persons and institutions active in the field of social security in their quest to develop and/or establish social security systems.

GAS AT SITE LABELSSUNMeDIA STUDIO printed manuals for Gas At Site last year, with which they were very happy. The STUDIO recently also redesigned Gas At Site’s logo, and printed vinyl labels which will be applied on their tanks and containers. These labels are a test run and, if successful, another order will be placed in the near future.

ENGAGING HIGHER EDUCATION CURRICULA: A critical citizenship education perspective – Elmarie Costandius & Eli Bitzer

The authors aim to stimulate discussion about the nature and purposes of critical citizenship education in higher education. Rather than promoting a blueprint for change, they consider a generative research agenda for transformative higher education and how this orientation plays out on the ground. The book provides compelling suggestions for the way forward, together with a coda by Yusef Waghid that takes the conversation beyond critical citizenship education to include responsible citizenship. ECCLESIAL REFORM AND DEFORM MOVEMENTS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT– Ernst Conradie & Miranda Pillay (Editors)

This instalment of EFSA’s Ecumenical Perspectives series, published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, considers some of the major contemporary movements in South African Christianity and the Church, such as Inclusive and Affirming Ministries (IAM), the Mighty Men Conference and its counterpart, Worthy Women. It is exceptionally well written and meticulously researched, and highly recommended for theologians, ministers and Christians who are interested to see how these movements are impacting the identity and witness of the Church positively and negatively.

PATHWAYS IN THEOLOGY: Ecumenical, African and Reformed (Piet Naudé)– Henco van der Westhuizen (Editor)

The latest volume in the Beyers Naudé Centre Series on Public Theology, published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, exhibits the engaging and challenging work of public and ecumenical theologian Piet Naudé. The collection of 26 essays, written over three decades, constitutes an important contribution to public theology by critically and creatively evaluating diverse pathways through the landscape of Ecumenical, African, and Reformed theologies.

In hierdie publikasie stel die outeur dié stad se kostelikhede en treurmares uit die verre verlede te boek. Hierdie ware verhale uit Bloemfontein se verlede word hoofsaaklik gebaseer op inligting uit oorspronklike dokumente in die Vrystaatse Provinsiale Argief ewaarplek en Bloemfonteinse koerante, aangevul uit versamelings van die Nasionale Museum, Oliewenhuis-kunsmuseum, Vrystaatse Provinsiale Argiefewaarplek en die Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum en Navorsingsentrum in Bloemfontein.
