Bay swimmers dominate NZ squad(5.12.14) By Peter White

Tauranga swimmers led by Greerton's New Zealand short and long course 1500m record holder Nathan Capp continue to make their mark on the national stage. Capp is the inspiration for the next talented group of teenagers who have repeatedly exceeded personal best times in a memorable year for Western Bay swimming. Joshua Pickett, Benji Rowe, Thomas Chaney, Blake Horne (Otumoetai), Grace Eglinton (Mount Maunganui) and Libby Bradley (Greerton) have been selected in the 16-strong Aquaknights team to contest next week's Victorian Age Championships in Melbourne. Tauranga clubs have the highest percentage of the 16 swimmers repre-senting the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay/Poverty Bay regions. The criteria to qualify is as stringent as it gets at this level, with the swimmers having to meet the average top six times from the past three years' championships. All swimmers are expected to make finals. Otumoetai's head coach Stefan Swanepoel, who is also head coach of the Aquaknights, says it has been an unbelievable year for the club and his four charges joining him in Melbourne. "I feel very blessed and I don't think we could have done any better this year," Swanepoel said. "These four boys have absolutely out-performed any expectations I had. Apart from this meet they have qualified for, they came back from the short course nationals with 22 medals. "They are going there to win medals and their expectation is to do their best, and their best is very highly ranked at the moment. Three of them have won gold medals at New Zealand nationals." The swimmers cannot wait to take on the best young Australians. "This is my first international meet," Chaney said. "The qualifying standards were a lot harder than a New Zealand national meet so it is a good step up from what I am used to." Where Rowe wants to step up to is the medal dais. "I am hoping to get a medal and have been training to get a medal," he said. "Stefan pushes us during training to try and get our times lower and our average speed up." - Ruby Mathews, Rhianna Maxwell, Logan Horne, Danielle Spreadborough (Otumoetai), Claudia Capp and Calum Gilmour (Greerton) met the qualifying times for Melbourne but decided not to attend. Chaney takes bronze in Oz (26.12.14) By Peter White

Otumoetai swimmer Thomas Chaney had a memorable Victorian Age Championships. Tauranga clubs had the highest percentage of the 16 swimmers representing the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay/Poverty Bay regions at the Victorian Age Championships, held in Melbourne from December 13-18. Just qualifying was a major feat for Joshua Pickett, Benji Rowe, Thomas Chaney, Blake Horne (Otumoetai), Grace Eglinton (Mount Maunganui) and Libby Bradley (Greerton). Swimmers had to meet the average top six times from the past three years' championships and only two visitors were eligible to race in each of the finals. Greerton's Bradley, 15, had an outstanding meet, breaking PBs and making the final in all seven events she entered. She was desperately unlucky to miss a medal in the 50m Freestyle, with her time 27.32s just outside second placed time of 27.05. Otumoetai's Chaney, 14, and Horne, 15, also had memorable meets in Melbourne. Chaney was at his first international meeting and came home with bronze and a new PB by two

seconds in the 100m Butterfly. His time of 1:01.79 in his bronze medal swim set a new Bay of Plenty long course record by just over a second. He also raced to new PBs for boys' 14, 200m Breaststroke by two seconds and in the 200m Individual Medley. Horne qualified for eight events and smashed his PBs in six of those races, including the 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley. His biggest improvement was in the 100m butterfly. He also swam fast enough to make the finals in the 100m Backstroke, finishing fifth.

MORRInsville SWIM CAMP

Otumoetai Swimming Club would like to thank the following people for their ongoing support

Nicollette Aldridge from Bayleys for her ongoing support as the Major sponsor for our club.

Brendan and Lavina Good , owners Brookfield New World for sponsoring the BBQ items for

our 2014-2015 Club Nights.

On Sat 17 January nineteen swimmers headed off to the 50m Morrinsville pool for a 1 day swim camp. This camp helps with preparing our juniors who are gearing up for nationals in February and provides swimmers with long course swimming in the build up to the long course swimming season. The day consisted of two, two hour sessions with the break in between giving swimmers plenty of time to eat, play cards or board games and do dive bombs in the pool (impressing the locals)! Squad swimmer Nicole Allen is heading off to St Peters College and her mother Katrina arrived unexpectedly and shouted every swimmer an ice block! The day finished with pizza and drinks in the park. Thanks to Stefan for planning the programme and to Todd, Phil and Rachel for providing transport.

ENTERING A SWIM MEET An easy guide to entering swimming carnivals

1. Check the Bay of Swimming Calendar or the OSC board for upcoming carnivals.

2. Check if there are any qualifying times required to be able to enter the event.

3. Pay the additional $105.00 competitive swimmer fee to allow your child to be able to enter carnivals.

This is paid once a year.

4. Enter the carnival on the entry envelope found near the board at the pool. Make sure the entry is in the ‘box’ at the pool

a week prior to any advertised closing date. Include the entry fee with the envelope.

NO LATE ENTRIES CAN BE ACCEPTED.

5. Entries fees can be paid by cheque or cash ( Sorry, but no internet banking is available for carnival fees) It is easier if each

entry is paid separately.

6. Officials are required for every meet entered so be prepared to train as a timekeeper to assist OSC with providing officials.

PLEASE DON’T LEAVE IT UP TO THE OTHER PARENTS TO DO YOUR SHARE OF TIMEKEEPING.

7. If you are unsure which carnivals to enter refer to the ‘Target Meet’ calendar on the OSC notice board , newsletter , website

or email the carnival secretary Kerryn O’Neil who can assist you, or speak with Stefan.

If your child would like to enter a meet please ask for assistance if you are unsure of the procedure.

All swimmers must have times before entering meets. The only exception to the rule will be 800m and 1500m freestyle races.

Unfortunately you cannot be entered into a meet without official times.

If you are planning on entering your child into a meet which is not on the board please make sure you put in your entry at least 3

weeks prior to the closing date on the meet flyer.

This gives the Carnival Secretary and the Recorder plenty of time to get your entry in. You also need to email Kerryn O’ Neill and Lisa

Rowe to let them know you are entering.

Kerryn O’Neill - [email protected] Lisa Rowe - [email protected]

AS ALL ENTRIES HAVE TO BE COMPLETED AT THE SAME TIME NO LATE ENTRIES CAN BE ACCEPTED.

Please put all entries into the box at the pool on the envelopes provided.

PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ENTRIES DIRECTLY TO THE RECORDER.

To contact the recorder with any further enquires email: [email protected]
