Introduction from FFCF:On Friday 27th November, 10 students from St Philips School were given a fantastic opportunity to attend the London FA SEN ‘festival of football’ at the Copper Box Arena at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Each London club in attendance partnered with a local school that represented the respective clubs in the competition, playing matches against other specialist schools from Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Charlton, Tottenham and QPR.Special guests were in attendance to look for future England talent and were on hand for photos and gave words of advice for all of those taking part. Guest speakers included Troy Townsend (Kick it out Manager and father of England Player - Andros Townsend), Gary Knight (FA Disability Talent Selection Officer - South) and Lyndon Lynch (England CP Development coach).

Individual’s history: St Philips have been a long term partner of the Foundations for over 15 years and are currently receiving free football on their current delivery timetable as part of the Premier League funded, ‘Inclusive Champions’ initiative.Having been approached by the London FA regarding an SEN festival, the Foundation selected St Philip’s to represent them on the day, paying for the teas entry into the competition and for each player to receive a full replica Fulham kit to take away with them.

Individuals story of involvement in the programme (their words): “I am so excited; this is one of the best days of my life. Can we enter again next year?” (Ozzy, Year 10)“I really enjoyed the day, it was so good to see the facilities and play as part of a team” (Callum, Year 11)

Individuals story in someone else’s words (teacher, youth worker, parent, FFCF lead coach etc): “The organisation and the venue for our students to play in were fantastic. The standard of football across all the teams was really high which made the event even more special for the group. Our team were highly motivated and worked really well together, putting into practice all the skills they have learnt through the extra coaching they have received from Fulham each week.Although we lost our first game narrowly to Brighton, we then beat every other team without conceding another goal which was a great experience and confidence builder for all involved.

The team looked great in their Fulham kit with their names printed on the back. They were delighted with their performance and grateful for the opportunity of a day they will never forget”. (Andrew Hill, Deputy Head teacher, St Philips School)

Partner statement (School, youth club, community club, funding partner, local authority etc):“It’s the first time the London FA Youth Council has ever run a football festival, and it went down very well. The aim of the festival was to promote participation and engagement in football, and empower children with special educational needs to achieve their aspirations in football and everyday life. Our key outcome was to promote diversity and inclusion of all abilities, and for children to gain a unique and unforgettable experience they can share with their friends, families, their school and local communities. There was a fantastic atmosphere around the Copperbox! There was amazing play, phenomenal goals and amazing tricks on display at the festival!I believe we achieved our outcomes - everyone was positively engaged and left the Copperbox with a big smile on their face! Furthermore the festival has built the scope to develop projects such as: London FA SEN Schools Just Play sessions, a Special Educational Needs Football week, or support community trust and foundation's projects”(Keon Richardson, Disability Inclusion Officer at the London FA Youth Council)

Summary of the programme by FFCF:The ‘Inclusive Champions’ project focuses on engaging and transitioning young disabled people from school based sports provision into community sports clubs where they can begin the process of lifelong sporting habits. As a result we offer schools the chance to participate in scheduled, term time sporting activity with sport specific qualified coaches.

What next?Fulham FC Foundation will now be seeking to get the St Philips football team integrated into the London Youth Games, representing the Borough of Kingston in competitions. This will help to continue the schools links with competitive sport and further grow the confidence gained by each pupil during their time at the SEN Festival.
