Prasar Bharati wins Commonwealth Broadcasting Award s: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has bagged two international awards at Commonwealth Broadcasting Awards 2008 ceremony held in Nassau (Bahamas).Doordarshan won the CBA-World Bank Award for Programmes on Development Issues for its programme titled 'God's Own Crops', All India Radio (AIR) won the CBA-UNESCO award for Science Reporting and Programming, for the radio programme 'The Drop that Counts'. News on phone from AIR, Guwahati: The Assamese news bulletin prepared by All India Radio, Guwahati, will now be available over phone.To make the latest news and happenings across the state and outside more accessible to the people, the Guwahati station of All India Radio would start the 'News on Phone' service from next Tuesday. The service would be formally launched by Dr PK Bandopadhyaya, Director General(News), AIR, New Delhi. This service was first launched in AIR, New Delhi. At present AIR is running the service from Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Patna, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Thiruvanathapuram, Jaipur, Imphal, Lucknow and Raipur stations. (DX INDIA)

Cops clean up the air over Sagar, 6 illegal radio s tations busted: The West Bengal Police cracked down on six unauthorised private radio stations operating on Prasar Bharati frequencies. All have been operative in the various pockets under the Sagar police station in South 24 Parganas under names like Nagraj betar kendra, Ma Bishalakkhi and Ma Kali asthayi betar kendra. RTI to meet its listeners in India in Feb: Radio Taiwan International will hold Listeners' Club Meetings in India in February 2008. Scheduled meeting dates: 1. February 23, 2008 (Saturday) –limited to 35 listeners Time: 11:00 AM-14:30, Chennai (Madras) 2. February 24, 2008 (Sunday)-limited to 70 listeners Time: 11:00AM-14:30, Kolkata (Calcutta) 3. March 1, 2008 (Saturday)-limited to 35 listeners Time: 11:00 AM-14:30, New Delhi Venues will be announced later Qualifications: 1. Please write an email and state which meeting you would like to attend by writing "Chennai", "Kolkata" or "New Delhi" in the email "subject".

2. In the email, please state your name, address, telephone number, your ID number and how many years you have listened to RTI. 3. Only listeners with passes will be allowed entry. 4. Attire: casual, but proper as requested by the management of the venue. 5. Please send your email to rti@rti.org.tw by January 25, 2008 P.S. 1. Radio waves to hit college campus: Ravenshaw University here is coming up with Orissa's first campus-based FM radio station to provide students an interactive platform to reach out to each other, discuss issues of common interest and develop talent. (DX INDIA Via http://www.telegrap hindia.com)

LU to get its own community radio centre: “Lucknow University (LU) will soon set up a community radio centre, which will primarily broadcast programmes on health, education, sanitation and environment” said Prof Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, head of the Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) department. - Expressindia.com 19/01/08 MAJOR INITIATIVES OF I & B MINISTRY DURING 2007 FM Radio Channels During the period from January to November 2007, as many as 103 FM Radio Channels were commissioned, bringing the total number of functioning FM channels in the country to 150. The process is on for the allotment of another 97 private FM radio stations from the second phase.

Special Package For AIR and DD in J & K Government approved the implementation of the J&K Special Package (Phase-II) for improvement of services of both All India Radio and Doordarshan. The components of Rs. 299.87 crore package include: Generation of software from diverse sources for the DD Kashir Channel - Rs. 267.70 crore (2007-08: 127.75 cr; 2008-09: Rs.139.95 cr.) and purchase of equipment and related works - Rs. 32.17 crore (2007-08: Rs.25.12 cr. ; 2008-09: Rs. 7.05 cr.) The special package would enable the DD Kashir channel to improve its viewership by providing wholesome programmes to its viewers in the State and to effectively counter the influence of progaganda from PoK and across the border. It would

also help in generating high quality programme content and streamline and strengthen the terrestrial broadcast infrastructure in the State. (Alokesh Gupta Via Press Information Bureau, Govt of India)

7 NGOs get the nod to set up community radio statio ns: “The Ministry for Information & Broadcasting has approved the applications of as many as seven NGOs to set up community radio systems. The ministry has received a heartening response on the community radio front, with some 140 applications under the new broadened scheme," said a senior official from the ministry.

The 7 NGOs cleared include The Energy Research Institute of India (TERI) headed by well-known environmentalist R K Pachauri, Chennai-based Alternative for India Development, Delhi-based Society for Development Alternatives, Deccan Development Society in Hyderabad, Mannvikas Samajik Sansthan based in Satara in Maharashtra, Indian Society of Agri-Business Professionals and the Mysore Resettlement and Development Agency in Bangalore. Without fanfare, AIR goes online: Had it been one of the private broadcasters, there would have been spate of announcements and advertisements. For the All India Radio, the launch of the state-of-the-art multi-lingual website was a quiet one. Two government giants, AIR and the National Informatics Centre, have geared up to give a much more livelier and colourful website.

The website which came up earlier this week is more informative than the one All India Radio had so far been putting up on the net. The All India Radio and the National Informatics Centre appear to be keeping pace with modern technologies in face of stiff competition from the private parties. It was maintained by the IT unit of the news services

division of the All India Radio. The AIR seems to have taken note of the new technology of news dissemination. The site at www.newsonair.nic.in and www.newsonair.com with advanced features like 'Archiving and Search' with 'Feedback' was designed to meet the requirement of Internet users within the country and abroad. Visitors to the site can listen national bulletins in English, Hindi and in 11 regional languages, including Sanskrit and Nepali. FM radio expansion hits small-town hurdle: Bogged down by regulatory issues and lack of earning opportunities in smaller towns, the 30-odd private FM radio companies may not participate in the third-phase expansion of private FM radio mooted by the government. In the third phase, government will issue licences for 680 FM radio stations across 237 cities in the country, mostly very small towns like Achalpur, Bettiah and Churu. - The Economic Times 25/01/08

BBC to get audio, text news to mobiles: The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is set to bring audio and text mobile news services into India. BBC already provides the news on mobile service in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Talks are on with mobile service providers in India and the deals are likely to be sealed in a few weeks, sources say. While text news alert services are not a new concept for Indian mobile phone users, audio news services would be a novelty in this country. - Radioandmusic.com 18/01/08

RNW to tailor radio content for local stations: RNW (Radio Netherlands Worldwide), an independent multimedia company based in Holland, plans to create local content for Indian private FM stations customized to local preferences. RNW's Country Representative Amitabh Srivastava says, "First of all, we want to get a clear picture of what's needed in the Indian market. We do not want to impose our existing programming as-is on our potential partners. Instead we are looking for ways to come up with hybrid programming, shaped in close cooperation with our partners, containing interesting information from a more global ad Dutch perspective,

complemented by material produced locally in India, thus combining the best of both worlds." - Radioandmusic.com 18/01/08 India's school for radio jockeys: There are two types of people: Those who like to talk and those who like to listen. And if you fall into the first category, then India is the most happening place for you on earth. With 4,000 community radio stations, including FM studios, to come up in the next few years, broadcast bosses are busy head-hunting for professionals who could fill in the 30,000-odd jobs in the industry. “After the second phase of licensing of 336 radio stations in India, the demand for radio jockeys (RJs) have multiplied manifold,” said Simran Kohli, chief of the Academy of Radio Management (ARM), South Asia’s first broadcast school, based in New Delhi. - Xpress4me.com 16/01/08

Top 3 FM firms gear up for big bites: Big 92.7 FM, Radio Mirchi and South Asia FM are set to control 55% of the market. Advertising on Big 92.7 FM (Reliance Unicom), Radio Mirchi (ENIL) and South Asia FM (Sun TV group) may become costlier by up to 30 per cent. The three leading FM radio companies are looking to capture nearly 55 per cent of the FM radio market, among themselves and through subsidiaries, after the final bidding of the remaining 97 additional FM radio stations concludes later this month. - Agencyfaqs.com 08/01/08

Trai boost to FM: 700+ licenses in 260+ cities recommended: Much to the delight of the FM radio industry, the sector regulator Trai recommended that more than 700 licenses be issued right across the country, with most of the more than 260 towns and cities being granted at least three - some even four - separate licenses. - The Financial Express 09/01/08

‘No newscasts by private FM stations’: The Union Government does not propose to allow private FM radio stations to broadcast news or current affairs at present, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting P.R. Dasmunsi has said. In a written reply to senior Congress leader Shantaram Naik in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Dasmunsi, however, stated that 10 AIR FM Rainbow channels and four AIR FM Gold channels broadcast news bulletins and news updates produced by the news services division and regional news units of AIR. - The Economic Times 23/11/08

Private radio station in Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh: An undergraduate villager in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur District has become the cynosure of all eyes after setting up a private radio station here. Twenty-year- old Arun Kumar, a resident of Ravtipur Village, realised his dream with personal savings and contacts. He wanted to keep his fellow villagers posted with the current news, views and trends. "I wanted to set up my own radio station and I did it. It took me four years to make it operational, " said Arun Kumar. Villagers are all praise for Arun's unbelievable feat that has done proud to everyone here. - Topnews.com 23/11/08

AIR transmission centre attacked: Suspected militants attacked an All India Radio (AIR) transmission centre in Manipur and exchanged fire with the CRPF personnel guarding the facility on Sunday but there was no casualty, officials said. - The Times of India 21/11/08 Radio City enters Limca Book of Records: Radio City 91.1 FM has entered the Limca Book of Records for the second time. RJ Vera who hosts the morning show 'Radio City Breakfast Show' will be featured in the 2008 edition of Limca Book of Records for being the longest serving breakfast show RJ on any private FM radio station in India. HAM SAILING AROUND THE WORLD: A Canadian radio amateur and sailor Glenn Wakefield, VA7MLW, is now south of Australia as he continues his attempt to sail solo, non-stop around the world. He has set out on his westerly circumnavigation trek from Victoria,

It was established in Sep 28-1963 during the September revolution of the Kurdistan. The radio station was formed with the order of the KDP president Mustafa Barzani, the leader of September revolution. At the beginning, the equipment's used were a number of old military wireless sets joint together to form a short wave sender. The center of broadcasting was a cave deep in a Kurdistan mountain Salah-Addin north of Erbil. The radio station was a target of Iraqi air force for many years. A number of technician, editors and guards were killed by these air attacks. The radio was and is still running by the KDP. The Program of "VOK" consists of News, opinion of KDP, Kurdish culture and music. How to choose the right type of coaxial cable for your antenna system... so that you won't waste money buying expensive cables when you really don't need them...For example, TV cable companies use several types of 75 ohm coaxial cables that are ideal for amateur radio and short wave listening use, as well as for VHF band scanning... Because the world's production of TV type 75 ohm

coaxial cable is so huge as compared with the production of 50 ohm impedance cable, 75 ohm coax is much cheaper while providing the same or even higher quality on a per unit length cost basis. That's why I use 75 ohm cables at my amateur radio station for practically all applications... and I can assure you that receivers won't see any difference at all, and in the case of transmitters, a very simple impedance adapter is needed only with solid state outpur transceivers or transmitters, it is the only additional thing needed...

My old vacuum tube transceiver, a Kenwood TS820, doesn't even need the impedance converter , as it happily runs with 75 ohm coaxial cables easily matched by the rig?s output stage PI network. Si amigos,yes my friends, oui mesamis... whenever you have a chance of obtaining 75 ohm coaxial cable,just grab it !!! It works quite well, and for all ractical purposes, it will do the job.. There are even some large diameter low loss 75 ohm cables used by the TV cable industry that will make ideal transmission lines for your VHF , UHF and low band microwave antennas, and typically the TV cable company technicians will gladly provide radio amateurs with the short ends of the big drums of cable !!! WORLD NEWS Decision Extends Radio Station HCJB's Shortwave Broadcasts : HCJB Global Voice in Ecuador has been granted an extension to continue using its shortwave radio antennas that are scheduled for dismantling and removal from the mission's international transmission site near Pifo, a town 18 miles east of Quito. The extension postpones, for at least six months, removals that the station agreed to two years earlier with the Quito Airport Corporation (CORPAQ) to make way for a new international airport. Once the new facility is completed, some of the shortwave station's antenna towers could obstruct

SOLAR CYCLE 24 BEGINS: The magnetic configuration of bipolar sunspots with leading positive/negative polarity in the northern/southern hemisphere, is associated with solar cycle 23. According to what is known as the butterfly rule, the new high latitude sunspot region belongs to cycle 24. It was named active region 10981 or just 981 for all practical purposes. New solar cycles always begin with a high-latitude, reversed polarity sunspot, according to solar scientists."Reversed magnetic polarity " means a sunspot with opposite magnetic polarity compared to sunspots from the previous solar cycle. THE RADIO SCENE IN CHAD By Adrian Peterson*

The country of Chad is situated in the heart of the African continent. The total land mass of Chad is about one and a quarter million square kilometers. Most of the northern areas of Chad are desert.The history of Chad goes back a long way and it was an important segment of several large African empires on several earlier occasions. In the 1800s, European explorers and traders moved through the area and the French gained access to the territory with a formal treaty that was signed in 1897. Chad finally gained independence from France on August 11, 1960. Chad has a population of nearly eight million inhabitants [ca. 2000] with roughly six persons per square kilometer. The langs spoken in Chad include French & Arabic as well as a host of vernacular langs. The capital city is N'Djamena (n-JAH-men-a) and it is also the largest city in the nation with a population of half a million. The national radio of Chad is "Radiodiffusion Nationale Tchadienne", RNT, with its headquarters in N'Djamena and it was established in November 1955. RNT is govt owned and it is the only body permitted to bc in Chad on the SW and mediumwave bands. Radiodiffusion Nationale bcs to the entire country of Chad on the SW freq of 6165 kHz via its 100 kW tx located in Gredia, a suburb of the capital city N'Djamena. RNT is also active in N'Djamena on the FM freq of 94.05 MHz. RNT has also established four regional stns which bc occasionally on mediumwave but are now more active on the FM band. These stns produce local progrs in various langs for their audiences living in the various regions. However, the regional stns also carry the major progrs from RNT N'Djamena on relay, such as the national nx and other major features. In 1999, the govt of Chad liberalized bcing on the FM band thereby making it possible for groups and individuals to establish FM stns in Chad. Today, besides the govt owned RNT FM stn, three local non-govt controlled FM stns can be heard in N'Djamena.

Also heard in N'Djamena are the local downlink relays on FM from several other countries. These FM relay stns include Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV), Africa No.1

from Gabon, RFI Afrique from France, and the BBC African Service. There are half a dozen other privately owned FM stns in Chad, mostly in the south of the country. Radio bcing is crucial for the dissemination of information in Chad. It is the main source for nx and entertainment right throughout the country for most people due to the fact that the national television stn in Chad,

"Teletchad", is available only in the capital city area. As a finale to this DX report from Livinus Torty in Chad, we might mention that it seems to be very difficult in obtaining a QSL from the SW stn in their capital city. The first Radio Sangeet Sammelan The first Radio Sangeet Sammelan on All India Radio was held in 1957. Over 20 years before that a professor of psychology was trying to get his then nine-year-old son to sing something into the microphone to inaugurate the professor's private radio station in Mysore. The boy forgot his lines and started crying. That particular sammelan may not have taken off but Professor M V Gopalaswamy nurtured his passion for radio transmission and achieved something immortal - he set up India's first private radio station, in Mysore. He is recognised as the first person to have used the work 'Akashvani' for a radio transmission. Akashvani was adopted as the official name of All India Radio in 1957, exactly 50 years ago.

The professor was caught by the romance of airwaves when he came across an unused 50-watt transmitter. Prof Gopalaswamy set to work on it and in September 1935, his room in 'Vithala Vihar' in Mysore's Vontikoppal area became a radio station. He called the station 'Akashvani'. He invited singers to come to his house and in return for music rendered the artistes were sent off with tambula and respect. Gopalaswamy, then serving under the Maharaja of Mysore, also invited his brother-in-law to give a talk on radio. The young man used this opportunity to vent his discontent against the Maharaja. So livid was the professor that he threw the relative out of the house! And it took six-months of conciliatory efforts on the part of the family to get the speaker back into the house. Gopalaswamy soon imported a 250-watt transmitter. The station continued with support from the public and the Mysore Municipality till it was taken over by the Mysore State in 1941. The enterprising Dr Gopalaswamy had also established the department of Psychology at the University of Mysore in 1924 after obtaining his PhD in London under psychologist Dr Charles Spearman. The department is recognised as being the second oldest department of psychology in the country. "During the early years of radio transmission in Mysore the station had fixed loudspeakers outside the building. People sitting in the park nearby would run across to the station and request that a particular music be played. The very next minute, the air would be filled with the requested piece of music," recounts retired AIR Station Director Dr Jyotsna Kamat. "According to family lore, my uncle used to sit across the station and listen to the music being played. His favourite song was the Tamil hit 'Meen Pudippoma'. He used to keep requesting the station to play this song!" says media person Bharathi Ghanshyam, granddaughter of Gopalaswamy. It is debatable whether this is what Mahatma Gandhi meant when he called All India Radio 'A medium of unparalleled immediacy, intimacy and power'! Known for its emphasis on reliability, credibility and clear aim to educate and entertain, AIR remained a popular mass medium until television wooed away its audience. But with the advent of FM channels, radio has regained its popularity. Says radio jockey-cum-model Pavithra Ghanshyam, "the corridors of Akashvani in Mysore intimidated and awed me. Radio is a fantastic medium. On my shows I get calls from city slickers as well as from people calling themselves Balehannu Puttuswamy! Somewhere in my mind, the fact that my great grandfather Gopalaswamy was a pioneer in the field of radio has always drawn me to the media. Radio is not what it was in his time, as there is a constant need to reinvent," says the young RJ. AIR has grown. Today it has a network of 223 broadcasting centres with 143 medium frequency (MW), 54 high frequency (SW) and 161 FM transmitters. Even as the reach, range and style of mass media changes every day, channels and one word continues to instil a sense of continuity and patriotism - 'Ye hay Akashvani...' Introduction Singapore is one of the smallest but also one of the most economically advanced countries in the world. Singapore is a Parliamentary republic with 4.6 million people. The official languages of Singapore include Chinese, English, Tamil and Malay. The currency of Singapore is Singapore dollar. Mediacorp Radio Singapore is the national broadcaster of Singapore. Mediacorp Radio The domestic service of Radio Corporation of Singapore is now known as Mediacorp Radio. They broadcast on various FM frequencies through out the country. Mediacorp Radio also broadcasts on shortwave in four official languages of Singapore. The Chinese broadcasts can be heard on 6000 kHz, English on 6150 kHz, Malay on 7235 kHz and Tamil on 7235 kHz from 2300 to 1600 UT with 3 hour break during 1100-1400. Mediacorp uses a 100 KW transmitter for Tamil broadcasts and for all other services they use 250 KW transmitter. Radio Singapore International Radio Singapore International (RSI) is the overseas service of the Radio Corporation of Singapore. It was launched on 1st February 1994. It broadcasts 11 hours daily in 4 languages namely English, Mandarin, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. Mission Statement RSI is dedicated to quality broadcasting to external audiences and Singaporeans abroad. It seek to be a radio of reference for the region, providing a service which is reliable, accurate and objective source of news and views on international, national and domestic

events. The station will help foster a sense of common purpose through programmes which emphasise neighbourliness and promote mutual understanding in the social, economic and cultural fields. Programme Format The programme format of RSI includes News bulletins, business and market reports, Current affairs programmes, Newsline, Newsscan and focus on Singapore, Regional Press review, Life style programmes on arts and culture, people, places and trends, Scientific and technological development and entertainment programmes. Service Area and Transmitters The primary target area of RSI is South East Asia including countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and other South-East Asian countries within a radius of 1600 kilometres from Singapore. RSI uses 6 250 KW transmitters and 1 100 KW transmitter located at Kranji for their overseas and domestic service. RSI currently broadcasts in English on 6150 and 6080 from 1100 to 1400. Audience Relations Radio Singapore International maintain good relation with its audience. They issue colourful verification cards and postcards for reception reports. BBC Far Eastern Relay Station BBC operates one of its largest relay station near Kranji known as the Far Eastern Relay Station. They have 5 250 KW and 4 100 KW transmitters located at this site. This site ensures reliable reception of BBC throughout South East Asia, Oceania, South Asia and Middle East.
