Independent Practice For my independent Practise I want to look into the theme of Illustration for advertising and why and how it works so well. I am going to be doing both freehand Illustrator and also computer work to increase my skills on the software. During the end of last year and also over the summer I was doing Illustrations of anything I saw just to practise my drawing skills and I am now starting to feel more confident with my work which is why I want to carry it on. The methods I’m going to use are basic pen Illustration, computer work, collage and I am also going to give Photography a try as I have never really used it much in my work before but I think it is really important in design. I would also like to look in more depth at Typography because it’s such a broad subject which when used well can really make the difference in a piece of design. I think my work could be externalised by use in advertising campaign’s or book covers which is a something that I would love to do. Someone who is doing this is an Illustrator called Nina Chakrabarti, she does really simple pen illustrators for brands such as Topshop, Madza and many others. I also really like an Illustrator called Lauren Bishop who has done loads of book covers and lots of advertising Illustrations.

IndependentPractice For my independent Practise I want to look into the theme of

Illustration for advertising and why and how it works so well.

On this page and the page opposite is a selection of Illustrations that I did over the summer to continue my Independent Practice and try to find a direction that I wanted to explore. I decided to draw buildings and parts of building because I really love architecture and I think hand drawn in black pen they look so much more interesting and it takes the reality out of them. The buildings are from places that I visited over the summer and also buildings from around my home.

After doing so many hand illustrations, I decided to try do some illustrations of buildings on the computer.

On the following pages are some illustrations that I have done in black fine liner.

These are some illustrations I have done with half photo and half black fine liner. I did these because I thought that for advertising you need both the real image and also some fun with the illustration.

To put my work in context I decided to look at Nina Chakrabarti’s work as she does illustrations for adverts with hand rendered type. I decided to make some adverts using my Illustrations. I have also done an animated advert for the illustration on the opposite page, the link for it is:-http://emmawilkinson.gdnm.org/2010/12/14/independent-practice-animation/

Evaluation:-

My independent practice is always my favourite part of each semester because I love being able to do whatever I want to do.

I decided I wanted to look at illustration and it has been really nice just doing drawings of whatever I want. I really loved doing the illustration of shoes which was inspired by Nina Chakrabarti, her work is so simple but I think in advertising it can be really effective.

I also enjoyed doing the illustrations of buildings which led me to look at Alfred Wainwright, he was an illustrator and author of books about the Lake District but his style is so original and I hope to research him further in the future.

I also had my first go at Adobe Flash this semester, I first used it to create an animation in my Methods of Madness project but I then really enjoyed it and just wanted to play around with it more which is why I created a simple animated advert of one of my shoe illustrations. I am definitely going to practice it so I can improve my skills and hopefully have a chance to use it next semester.
