In e" orts to continue leading the

way with intelligent, real world

advancements in drilling technology,

Schramm is proud to announce the

upcoming launch of Pason ready

Telemast rigs. Schramm’s revolutionary

patented air-CONTROL and i-CONTROL

systems are in the process of being

equipped to utilize a robust system

of computers and sensors monitored

from a remote location using the Pason

Electronic Drilling Recorder (EDR).

The Pason EDR is a robust system of

computers and sensors networked

from a Schramm rig to the Pason

Automatically-Aiming Satellite system,

broadcasting data to any location o" -site

as well as to workstations at the site.

Pason EDR features:

• Monitor bit position at all times

• Stores all drilling data to disk every ten

seconds

• Access historical well data

Pason’s robust system will be available

on demand at the rigsite, the o# ce

and/or any mobile device. Pason is the

leading global provider of specialized

data management systems for land-

based and o" shore rigs worldwide.

Their rental solutions include data

acquisition, wellsite reporting, remote

communications and web-based

information management and enable

collaboration between the Schramm rig

and the o# ce. For more information on

The Schramm T450MIIA is a truck

mounted drill rig engineered

primarily for applications using

combination air rotary, mud rotary

DTH hammer drilling methods.

The truck engine provides reliable

power for all hydraulic mud and air

systems. Rugged design provides

high productivity on diverse job sites,

including the largest logistics combat

support agency, also known as the DLA

(Defense Logistics Agency).

Troop Support, one of several major

DLA activities, provides over $14 billion

annually of food, clothing and textiles,

medicine and medical equipment, and

construction and equipment to

Schramm Talks Direct Modeling to ANSYS

Advantage Newsletter

Over the years Schramm has

standardized on Simulation

Driven Product Development to design

products. Recently; however, after

researching various alternatives, the

decision to move forward with ANSYS

Mechanical software was made to reach

the company’s goal of deploying only

exceptionally reliable equipment to the

! eld.

Schramm’s own Thomas Ronge,

Mechanical Engineering Lead, was

interviewed for an article in ANSYS

Advantage Newsletter (Volume IV. Issue

2, 2010) about the bene! ts of using

the ANSYS SpaceClaim Direct Modeler

software compared to other traditional

CAD software packages.

“CAD systems available today have their

own unique strengths and weaknesses

– but they historically have been missing

the ability to defeature and repair an

assembly in an expedient manner,”

said Ronge. “Schramm decided to look

down a di" erent avenue for an answer:

The ANSYS SpaceClaim Direct Modeler

tool. “The Schramm team has found

that this tool enables quick cleanup

and defeaturing operations, as the tools

works directly with geometry and does

not have to take feature dependencies

into account.”

Schramm engineers faced an e# ciency

issue when they were required to break

down current CAD models for simulation.

Most models meant for analysis provided

too much information from the large

amount of detail embedded in the older

IGES and STEP format ! les.

“Engineers at Schramm strive to spend

as much productive time as possible

post-processing and interpreting results

(not repairing and defeaturing geometry

models),” says Ronge. “Spending less

time on model setup is a huge bene! t.

Schramm can now reap a number

of bene! ts from higher engineering

analysis throughput, including reduced

time to marker and more reliable

equipment. We have progressively

improved the function and quality of

our products to provide world-class

performance and reliability. Advanced

tools such as ANSYS SpaceClaim Direct

Modeler provide us with the ability to

easily and quickly design and prepare

models for simulation as we create

new drill rig products or customize

products for customer requirements.”

Because of this software, Schramm

Engineers can now complete projects

in several hours versus a few days.

With signi! cant time savings and

enhanced engineering analysis, this

program alone will help Schramm

provide customers with the same

great product, more e# ciently. g

Engine coolant is considered any

solution that is circulated through the

engine to provide a means of heat

transfer from various engine compo-

nents. The function of the coolant is

basic to a successful engine operation.

Coolant solutions must meet these

basic requirements:

• Provide for adequate heat transfer

• Provide a corrosion resistant envi

ronment with in the cooling system

• Prevent formation of scale or

sludge deposits in the cooling

system

• Be compatible with the cooling

system hosing and seal material

• Provide adequate freeze protection

during cold weather operation

Diesel coolant additive (DCA) and

supplemental coolant additive (SCA) are

required to prevent premature failure of

wet sleeve cylinders in diesel engines.

Lack of additive in the coolant will cause

corrosion and implosion in the cylinder

liner, which eventually causes liner pit-

ting and serious engine damage.

A 50/50 mix of water and glycol based

coolant is a proper mix of coolant for

diesel engines. For corrosion inhibitors,

DCA must be added to the mix and

blended prior to installation in the cool-

ing system. The minimum/maximum

requirement for DCA is 1.2 - 3.0 units

per gallon of mix. This level should be

checked and adjusted at engine oil

change intervals. Coolant condition test

kits are available through Schramm (Ref-

erence part #3030-0496).

Currently, the Schramm factory ! lls all

drill rigs with an Extended Life Coolant /

Antifreeze in their cooling systems. The

ELC is already pre-mixed with all of the

necessary additives to prevent corrosion

and pitting, even in operation tempera-

tures as low as -34°F.

The ELC is advertised to have a 10,000

hour life expectancy with the require-

ment to add ELC extender at 5,000

hours. These cooling systems should

only be replenished with a compatible

ELC product. Mixing ELC with 15% or

more of water or conventional coolants

will reduce the e" ectiveness and life of

the coolant.
