At this year’s Hotelympia exhibition, a new design award was introduced that recognises the best hotel suites. The winner,

featured on page six, created what the designers from RPW Design call a “city apartment”, with stunning interiors and the

latest technology. This reflects the trend of making luxury hotels look like a home from home, and this issue we look at some

of the latest designs for hotels as part of a focus on hospitality interiors.

Technology is integrated into many of the latest high-spec home interiors, and this month we find out about how systems

can seamlessly control everything from audio and TV equipment to lighting and temperature. it all helps to add an exciting

high-tech element to cutting-edge concepts.

Also in this issue we look at the latest designs for stairs and balustrades, both for the home and commercial interiors, as well

as ideas for tiling and surface design.

Home interiors will also be under the spotlight at this year’s grand Designs Live show at London exCel in May. in this issue,

we look ahead to this event aimed at both professional designers and consumers, which provides ideas and innovations for

every room of the home. go to page 49 to find out about a special offer for in.Design readers which means that you can

claim up to two free tickets if you visit on a weekday.

The new owners of the 100%Design show have revealed plansto reverse the event’s decline withnew features to improve the visitorexperience. The exhibition, which

has been running for 15 years, has beenacquired from Reed exhibitions by Media10, which runs the ideal Home show, grandDesigns Live and Clerkenwell Design Week.

After 100% Design attracted more than18,000 visitors to earls Court last year, Media10’s design portfolio director Daren newtonsaid they planned to more than double thatfigure to 40,000. The new-look event will besplit into four areas under the 100% Designumbrella: 100% interiors, 100% Office,100% Kitchens and Bathrooms and 100%eco Design and Build.

each area will be marketed through itsdifferent channel, and Media 10’s newstrategy will help it fulfil the aim of at least10,000 visitors in each zone, which will befilled with large and small companies. Allthe zones will be entered by a “tunnel”,delivering the visitor to the heart of the fourzones.

“The demise of the show can be attributedto the fact that the right brands haven’t beenthere,” Daren said, speaking to in.Design’ssister magazine, stand Out. “We do need tobring the big and cool brands back.” He saidmany lapsed exhibitors were poised to signup for the 2012 show which takes place atearls Court from september 19 to 22. “Theyare brands that once made the show whatit was and, if you mix them with the smallerbrands, then it completes the reason forsomeone to come.”

As well as a bar in the centre, Media 10 isintroducing a restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef. “We want to make sure thatthe visitor experience is perfect and, todo that, we need to use what once wasexhibitor space as feature space andnetworking areas,” Daren added. “The showneeds glamour: we have a large productionbudget and the visitors we want to attractexpect something extra.”

He said they wanted 100% Design to be the“epicentre” of the London Design Festivalwhich runs from september 15 to 23. Thefestival’s director, William Knight, has been

appointed as events director of 100%Design. Daren said: “100% Design needs tobe brought back to its former glory, and hebelieves that 100% Design needs to work asthe show where business is done.”

Other improvements will include a200-seater auditorium that will link viasatellite the best speakers in the designindustry. Daren said it would be a “globalinteractive conference”, with the audiencehaving voting keypads and the latesttechnologies to join in on the debate viasocial networks. MondayMondays usually kick off first with a teammeeting in London. This week is a fun one,as a large ski chalet is due for completion inVillars, France. The project is a culminationof two years’ work. The chalet itself wasdesigned by sir Richard Rogers and we havecompleted all of the interior design andstyling. As i write, we have three enormouslorries clearing customs in switzerland, which we will meet at the chalet tonight.

tuesdayD Day at the chalet – it’s been interesting. The lorries actually could not get up thefinal narrow roads to the chalet, so we havehad to rent three small vans with an armyof helpers to offload, reload and get all ofthe goods to the chalet. This problem aside, there is still a real buzz in the air as all thenew furniture and art arrives. The client isdue in tomorrow so we have 24 hours to geteverything installed and styled to perfectionprior to their arrival, so lots to do! We alsohave an army of builders to supervise asthey finish final joinery issues.

Mark Howorth moved to theUK from California in the early1990s and, after a spell runninga London art gallery, began hisown interior design practiceCallender Howorth. For morethan 12 years, the practice hasworked on a wide range ofprojects from country houses andLondon apartments to retail andoffice projects

WednesdayAfter an all-nighter and lots of coffee andswiss chocolate, we are finished 20 minutesbefore our client arrives. We have managedto get all the log fires burning, stunningflower displays everywhere and thechampagne ready – it really is looking great.i am very pleased, relieved and exhausted. The chalet is at such a high altitude that theclouds have come in, and today they areactually resting beneath the chalet so thereis a real sense of calm and serenity to theplace. Clients arrived and were thrilled withhow it all looks.

thursdayBack in London, and an early meeting witha developer in Chelsea. We are working ona large project for them to design and buildfour houses and 12 apartments. A greatmeeting, and then we were treated to lunchby the client. Back to the studio to meetwith the contractors who are building ournew studio space. We have found a greatloft space in the old Morelands gin factory inClerkenwell. As we often entertain clients atthe studio, we have designed a fantastic barand dining area which we will put to goodeffect!

FridayOff to nice on the first flight out (ugh).Meeting a long-standing client who we arenow designing a villa for, in the hills abovenice. We do lots of projects in the south ofFrance and, being a complete Francophile, ireally love working there. The French havea great way of getting things done whilsthaving a great lunch! sadly i am not happywith the quality of the new build team andhave had to really assert – in professionalFrench – that the standards are just not t

The French love to debate, and italways makes me smile at how passionatethey become with words and hand gestures! After coffee i am off sourcing and head toseveral of my favourite furniture places –always an adventure as one never knows

what one will find. There is an exceptionalchandelier shop run by a Parisian calledBernard on a tiny back street in Antibes. Hefinds items from all over France and i amlucky to see and agree on this occasion onsome amazing Baccarat chandeliers for aclient in st Tropez.

Donna staples from the Britishinstitute of interior Design’senvironment Committeehelped to raise awareness ofenvironmental issues in interior

design through a talk delivered as part ofthe Designing green interiors event.

Donna, who is associate at interiordesigners and architects practice Pellings, gave an insightful seminar to an audienceof designers and materials developerdelegates. she addressed the experiencesand challenges of using and specifyingsustainable materials for interior designprojects.

she also discussed the tools availableto designers and looked in depth at theBRe green guide, an online tool used forchecking the score of business elements andcovers fabric elements, to floor finishes.

The event was organised by the eRDF-funded inCrops enterprise Hub and held atthe Building Research establishment (BRe) in

Watford. it was aimed at interior designers, architects, developers, building contractorsand manufacturers of interior materials.

“sustainability issues are increasingly at theforefront of the design process and needto be addressed on a whole project basis, from early design to detailed advice forbuilding users,” Donna said. “sustainabledevelopment criteria are embedded inthe planning process and our architectsare able to advise closely and work withclients to ensure project proposals meet therequirements of the local authority.

“it is important clients’ aims and objectivesare understood and designers are aware oflegislation and options. Products also requirestandardisation, and correct accreditationshould be put onto their use within themarket. There are many challengesfacing sustainability in design. However, opportunities do exist and it is imperativethat we raise awareness of these issues.”

Across europe, the regenerationof buildings and cities forthe 21st century has inspiredarchitects and designers tohonour the past while creating

something for the future. They have beenkeen to integrate elements of a location’sindustrial and cultural heritage into theirprojects – something that is illustratedby two newly completed hotels in twoindustrial centres at opposite ends of europe:Coventry in the UK and Zaporozhye inUkraine.

Premier inn, CoventryCoventry has suffered over the past centuryfrom the decline of its key industries, fromribbon-making to car manufacturing, as wellas the destruction of many of its historicbuildings during World War Two. One thatsurvived was Coventry City College, builtin 1935 and a fine example of Art Decoarchitecture. its frontage was a homageto the Doric facades of classical greekarchitecture, complete with columns andportico, decorated with Art Deco mouldingsdepicting the technology of the 1930s. Thecollege in earlsdon Park closed in 2008, butowner MCD Developments has preservedthe two-storey building by converting itinto a hotel, with future plans for an officecomplex.

MCD brought in construction specialistLeadbitter group to carry out the £6millionproject which involved restoring manyoriginal features inside and out as well ascreating a new third storey to accommodate42 bedrooms for Whitbread’s Premier inn.About 300 original Crittall steel windowswere restored along with some feature

leaded lights. The original tiles on the wallsand floor of the central entrance hall andtwo wings either side of the main foyer alsoneeded pain-staking restoration.

Other major features that Leadbitter broughtback to their former glory include the centrallightwell atrium, which was originallybuilt as an open well, flanked by Art Decocolumns rising to the full height of thebuilding. Also restored were the two originalterrazzo staircases sweeping down eitherside of the lightwell, complete with bronzehandrails.

The refurbished building is made up of ahotel reception, restaurant and kitchen onthe ground floor, with space for offices onthe first floor and part of the ground floor. On the second floor are 58 hotel rooms plusanother 42 on the newly built third storey.

The interiors were designed for Whitbreadby architectural and interior design practice

The space studio which has worked onnumerous hospitality projects from the eatonHotel in edgbaston, West Midlands, to a five-star resort on the Cape Verde islands. For

the rooms, Leadbitter chose to have whole“pods” built off-site, down to the pictures onthe walls and carpets on the floor. elementseurope provided 59 bathroom pods using itssolopod system and 42 bedroom modulesusing its Roompod system.

senior project manager Kevin O’Brienof Leadbitter group says this meant thetop floor of the hotel could be completedrelatively quickly. “Once the pods weredelivered to site, we were able to installfive or six a day,” he says. “When utilisingthis method of construction, it is vital thatevery detail is covered at the design stage,as there is absolutely no room for mistakes. On site, we installed a steel frame onto theexisting roof, in order to spread the loadof the bedroom pods. All we then neededto do at the third floor was to install theservices once the bedrooms were in t

The result is an impressive landmark buildingthat combines modern interiors with originalArt Deco features, maintaining a link witha time when Coventry was the Britishcentre for motor manufacturing and otherindustries.

Five Points by Sheratonnearly 2,000 miles east of Coventry, in theformer soviet republic of Ukraine, is anotherindustrial city, Zaporozhye – which is twinnedwith Coventry’s neighbouring Birmingham. This major city continues to be Ukraine’scentre for motor manufacturing, and theregion’s heritage is reflected in a major newproject on the banks of the Dnieper River:the first starwood hotel in Ukraine.

The flagship new-build Five Points bysheraton hotel has 164 rooms and suites, with stylish interiors by JOi-Design. CorinnaKretschmar-Joehnk, co-managing director ofJOi-Design, explains: “starwood’s debut intothe Ukrainian marketplace is a significantmilestone. it was especially importantto us that our design would honour andinterpret the region’s rich heritage througha fresh, contemporary lens fit for thebooming economic and cultural growthof this important industrial centre andtransportation hub. As a result, naturalmaterials such as warm timber and locally-sourced stone are prevalent, and we haveimplemented traditional patterns from amodern perspective.”

On entering the elegant lobby, guestsare greeted by the sunflower, a folkloresymbol representing Ukraine’s fertile lands.Overhead, an abstraction of this motif shines

down in the form of a chandelier craftedfrom glass balls in both clear and gold, whilethe pattern of the cream marble floor is amagnified reflection of the flower’s petals.

Following the lines of the lobby’s curvedshell are two sweeping staircases with litmarble steps that cast an ethereal glowto create drama. Another design detailis inspired by the country’s heritage: thetraditional Ukrainian colour pairing of blueand yellow. This is harmoniously translatedinto the design of a sleek reception desk, with backlit frosted panels and a gildedwoven screen reminiscent of the compactflorets within a large sunflower blossom. This colour duo also extends to the otherpublic areas through accents such as thecushions on the plush tawny leather sofas

and lounge chairs in the library, wine barand café.

The Flavors restaurant has a natural feel, using contrasting tones of light and darkwalnut timber to create a connection withUkraine’s nickname as the “bread basketof europe”, coming from the region’s richsoils and abundant harvests. The sunflowershape appears again, at both the frostedglass entry door as well as in the marbleinlay in the oak planks which elegantly windthrough the restaurant to form the circulationareas. Fresh celadon green cushions, flaxenwallcovering and glowing pendant lightsall help create a warm and relaxing diningatmosphere. demonstrating once again how tradition andmodernity can be stylishly merged.

This interpretation continues in the guestrooms. A traditional Cossack patternhas been transformed into the carpet’scontemporary diamond design, forming acrisp contrast to the room’s warm oak timberfinishes. in the bathrooms, blue mosaic glasstiles allude to the nearby river.

The architecturally impressive Presidentialsuite is a small residence located withina bridge between the hotel’s two

Fitted withwhite marble and rich timber floors, thePresidential suite features individuallydetailed embellishments, such as thesmall cream-coloured porcelain tiles on themirrors. in the large in-room spa, guests cansoak in the freestanding tub or recline onthe chaise longue. guests have panoramicviews of the Dnieper River or the cityscapeof Zaporozhye while relaxing in elegantinteriors that subtly combine contemporarydesign with Ukraine’s rich heritage.

Anew development of uniqueduplex and triplex luxuryapartments with seafrontlocation, The View, split into fourhomes, is an ideal showcase for

the quality of the Daikin Altherma air/waterheat pump system. The outdoor units areencased in powder-coated galvanised steel, the heat-exchanger fins are pre-coated witha special anti-corrosion treatment providingfive to six times more resistance against the

more corrosive, coastal environment andthe provision of rust-proofed steel sheets onthe underside of the units give additionalprotection. These features are standardacross the Daikin range.

Daikin Altherma was specified by theBryant & Reina group as air/water heatpump systems are a perfect match for amix of under-floor and radiator heating innew-build properties. The low-temperatureDaikin Altherma integrated split heat pumpand DHW cylinder was considered an idealsolution for this development.

Having previous experience of the“complete” Daikin Altherma system on anearlier project, the client specified space Airto supply for The View development. Pre-fabricated ancillary piping kits only availablefrom space Air simplify the installation andensure that each system can be exactlyreplicated.

Mark Houghton from space Air solutionssaid: “This project is an excellent exampleof where the build quality of Daikinequipment really counts, not just in termsof performance and reliability but also, withthe outdoor units all pre-treated to resistcorrosion from the coastal environment, longevity in relatively harsh conditions.”

Staircases are a functional necessityin every home but, accordingto bespoke stair and balustradespecialist Bisca, progress in designand use of materials means

they can be attention-grabbing designstatements in their own right. in a projectin Hertfordshire, Bisca’s brief was to createan impressive focal point that would notonly join the ground to the first and secondfloors but also harmonise with a large, striking glass atrium. Bisca’s team came upwith an exciting, swirling sculptural designin which a continuous sequence of walnuttreads and risers, supported by mild steelstringers, gracefully overhang at each side sothat the treads appear almost to float. At thefoot of the stairs, the hand-stitched leatherhandrails curve down to the floor on eitherside to form sweeping newels that are alsoleather clad.

Working within the constraints of anhistoric building need not be a problem fordesigners wanting to create contemporary-looking staircases. The refurbishment of the

180-year-old listed students union buildingat newcastle University by FaulknerBrownsArchitects included the main central staircasefor the five-storey building. As the integralstructure and fabric had to remain intact, cladding of the staircase was allowedonly if it retained the original feature. Thearchitects’ solution was to use natural stoneacrylic Hi-MACs in nordic White. Hi-MACs,which was used throughout the building, was particularly useful for this project as thematerial will not be stained or damaged bystudent flyposting.

Beautifully designed balustrades with astunning finish can dramatically enhancea space, says ian Page, general managerof Kee safety, a leading supplier of railingsystems. “stainless steel, a favourite withmany interior designers, provides a sleekand tidy solution that has maximumdurability in comparison to many othermaterials,” he adds. some stainless-steelsolutions require welding, cutting andspecial tools but the Kee stainless solutionis a modular alternative that removes theseneeds. it allows for a quick and efficient

install, with little skill or labour required.“This method will also save on design andinstallation costs, without compromisingon the quality and safety of the finisheddesign,” ian adds.

Key safety has expanded its stainless-steel balustrade range, upgrading itshigh-specification Kee stainless tube andcomponent system to offer new optionsfor a broader range of interior and exteriorapplications. it features a greater range ofhandrail, base and infill options, including t

frameless glass balustrades, woodenhandrailing, glass, bar and mesh infill panelsand a wider selection of fitting types tomeet specific application requirements andcomponents suitable for outdoor use. it isnow available in grade 316 stainless steeltube alongside grade 304 stainless steel.

A new concept in glass balustrades hasbeen launched by Zapp Balustrades.Designed for balconies and terraces ofprivate apartments, houses, and hotels, thenew Citila is an aluminium framed height-adjustable glass screen. it is finely counter-balanced which means they can be easilyadjusted by hand to either the full heightor any intermediate height. Available infour sizes and manufactured in sweden, theglass balustrade comprises an aluminiumframe with laminated glass in the fixedand moving sections. The fixed sectioncan be supplied with translucent glass orother materials. With a standard finish ofsatin anodised aluminium, other surfacefinishes can be specified such as powder

coating or anodising in a range of colours. For installation, the glass screen systemuses various stainless steel connectorsand fasteners. Other options available areautomatic locking, lock with key, overheadhanging fixed glass and electric operation.

From Australia comes a new concept forilluminating stairways and balustrades. Kliksystems, a manufacturer of architecturalfixtures and fittings, won the 2011 AustralianLuminaire Design Award last year withits “snap in” LeD luminaire, the Ledpod.it is designed for handrails of any sizeand focuses light downwards on stairsand paths. A specially designed heat sinksolved the problem of heat on the glasslens and handrail which does not exceed35 degrees Centigrade. The Ledpod fitsflush into a handrail, installed with a simplepush and removed with a quarter turn. “itwas important to me to have the luminairelocated out of view under the handrail, effectively lighting the stairs or walkwaywith good vertical illumination whileminimising glare,” says Klik systems designmanager Paul Roos. “Ledpod is particularlyuseful where no overhead lighting ispossible.” it adds to the options available fordesigners looking for practical solutions andcreative ideas for staircases and balconies.

IntelligentdesignMark Ludmon finds out how innovationsin technology are offering designers newideas for creating an “intelligent” home

At next month’s grand DesignsLive show at London exCel, anew section has been createddedicated to the “automatedhome”. it will present new

technology, from the ebode Lightspeaker, which combines low-consumption LeDlighting with wireless sound, to iQ glass,an eco-efficient heating system that

uses “intelligent” glass. This reflects arevolutionary move towards the “connected”home, says Will Brocklebank, director andhead of technology at Face to Face Digital, which designs, installs and maintains totalresidential technology systems. “Our modernlives mean our homes multi-task as neverbefore: a kitchen is simultaneously a placeto feed the family, somewhere to relax

and also a makeshift office to bash out anemail while grabbing a coffee,” he explains.“The data that flows round the house, fromour thermostats, washing machines, TVs,computers and door entry systems formsthe heartbeat of our home.”

For instance, Will says the new technologymeans you can equip a home with boiler

new products from Crestron include itswireless CLWi-DiMUeX lighting dimmersfor integrated lighting control. it has alsointroduced the new compact 2.8-inchtouch screen TPMC-3sMD which expandson its popular TPMC-4sM line by offering adiscreet, stylish and affordable solution thatis designed to fit into a single gang wall box. This sleekly designed device enables usersthe convenience of one-touch control forlights, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, all AV sources and security without obscuringa home’s décor.

innovations in designing automated homesare recognised each year by the Customelectronic Design and installation Associationwith its CeDiA Awards, with categories forintegrated home projects of all sizes. Judgingfor the 2012 awards is under way in therun-up to April’s ceremony at HamptonCourt Palace in surrey, but last year’swinners highlight what is now possible.sMC, a leading specialist in communication, entertainment, environmental control, lighting and security systems, won for aproject for a home in Chelsea, London. itincluded a dedicated media room, with CAT5cabling for HD and ethernet connectivityfor the home entertainment system, plusfurther integration of lighting controls andthe heating, ventilation and air conditioning.it had a strong emphasis on security, t

When it comes to security, door entrysystems are increasing functionality, although no systems yet allow for wirelessconnection with smartphones or tablet PCs.At door entry specialist intelligent Home, new functionality has been added forleading brand Cronus. its video door system, available in white and black, has beenenhanced with two-wire technology whichmeans video and audio are transmittedthrough the power cable. it can also

interface with a CCTV system and TV aswell as be programmed to forward to atelephone.

Lutron electronics Co, a specialist in lightcontrol, has introduced its latest serenaremote-controlled shades solution to europe.easily installed with only two brackets andfour screws, the shades are operated byLutron’s iR remotes or other programmableuniversal remotes, allowing them to beadjusted from anywhere in the room. They are made with a unique insulatinghoneycomb fabric which keeps a roomcooler in the summer and warmer in the t

Lutron has also launched its new HomeWorksQs whole-home control solution into europe, adding control of temperature and audio-visual components. it includes wirelesstechnology to operate window coveringsvia Lutron’s Clear Connect radio frequencytechnology and the ability to dim high-efficacy light sources, helping to save energy.

The kitchen is becoming the hub of manyhomes – creating the term “social livingkitchen” – and new products reflect thistrend. At last month’s KBB Birminghamshow, sensio Lighting launched the sensioKoch range which includes smart Kitchenthat allows people to control everythingwithin the room through a smartphoneor tablet PC. sensio Koch’s smart Driveprovides multimedia control throughout thehome, enabling people to switch lighting onand off as well dimming and brightening forthe perfect lighting combination. it can alsolink into video cameras, allowing outdoorliving areas to be monitored through livestreams on a smartphone.

Also for the kitchen, appliancespecialist Caple has introduced thenew sense oven, C5100 Lift, whichrises smoothly from a flush positionon the worktop at the press of abutton. it can be lowered into thework surface while continuing tocook food – with crush-preventionsensors to ensure fingers are notcaught. The oven, which has astainless-steel interior and three telescopicglass shelves, features 13 touch-controlfunctions including pizza and bread-makingprogrammes.

Appliances like this enable designersto integrate technology into a projectseamlessly and smartly. “There is alsoa significant design impetus behind theincreasing intelligence and inter-operabilityof systems,” says Will at Face to Face Digital.“How often has one seen a beautiful interiorblighted by a hospital beige air conditioning

contoller or thermostat box? integratedsystems can remove the complexity andugliness of these many differing controls andpresent the modern home-owner with asimple, clear control screen that incorporatesall these tasks and more.” They are nolonger a luxury for the “flashiest” homes butrepresent good commercial sense, he adds.“The ‘connected home’ promotes efficiencyand productivity in our multi-faceted, fast-paced lives.”

Bold purples are in vogue, according to italian glass tilesspecialist Trend, inspired by thetraditional colour of wealth andstatus. “it’s the mark of royalty

Having talked to architects, designers andtiling retailers across the UK, Tom hasspotted a renewed enthusiasm for thepurple spectrum. Trend itself has introducedthe dramatic glass mosaic designs of
