Financial AidMaintain your Funding Satisfactory Academic Progress. NICC is required to monitor academic progress for students receiving financial aid funding� If satisfactory academic progress is not maintained, students receiving financial aid will be declared ineligible and their financial aid award(s) will be cancelled� Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is measured by the following:

• Maintaina2.0cumulativeGradePoint Average (GPA)�

• Complete67%ofyourcumulative attempted credits�

• Completeyourprogramofstudywithin 150%timeframeofyourtotalprogramlength.

Students who do not meet any one of these SAP measurements at the end of the semester will be placed on Financial Aid Warning� Students who do not meet any one of the SAP measurements at the end of a consecutive semester will be placed on Suspension and will not longer be eligible for financial aid�

Return of Federal Financial Aid Funds. Federal regulations require NICC to comply with the Return ofTitleIVpolicies.

• Withdrawalfromcourses.If you are considering withdrawal from one or more courses, you should consult the Financial Aid Office to determine if your financial aid will be affected now and/or in the future� Withdrawing from one or more courses or receiving a failing grade in all courses within a semester subjects youtotheReturnofTitleIVpolicyandcan result in loss of all or part of your financial aid� In some instances you may owe money back to NICC�

• Failing all classes. If you receive a failing grade in all courses within a semester, you may be required to return part or all of your financial aid�

4. Accept your loans. • BasedonthefundinglistedinyourAward Letter, you should determine if you need to borrow a student loan, and if so, how much you shouldborrow.Youmustbeenrolledatleast half-time to be eligible for a student loan�

Financial Aid DisbursementsFinancial Aid lock date. Financial aid is awarded based on the students enrollment level on the “lock date�” The “lock date” is on the 15th day of the semester� It is important to confirm your course registration for the semester prior to the “lock date�” Refer to the Enrollment Levels chart for specific enrollment levels�

Financial Aid disbursements. All financial aid is first applied to your tuition, fees and bookstore charges� Remaining financial aid after these costs have been paid in full will be sent to you in the form of a refund check� Refund checks are based on the enrollment and attendance status at the time of disbursement� Enrollment and attendance in your classes will be verified by your instructor� Disbursement checks are mailed approximately 30 days after the start of the semester for students who are enrolled in courses that begin at the start of the semester� If you are enrolled in any late start courses, your disbursement check may be delayed until after your late start course(s) begin or you may receive multiple checks depending on your enrollment status at the time of disbursement�

Book Costs: Excess financial aid funding can be used toward textbook purchases� At the Calmar campus, you will receive a bookstore voucher from the Financial Aid Office to help you pay for your books� At the Peosta campus, Bookstore staff will apply your available financial aid toward the purchase from the NICC bookstore of your books�

How do I know which books I need for class?

What’s available for food on campus?The Cougar Café has a wide range of food options� There is no meal plan, so you pay as you purchase� The Peosta Campus Cougar Café is open from 7 a�m� - 3 p�m� Monday - Thursday and until 1:00 p�m� on Friday and offers hot and cold breakfast items, daily lunch specials, deli wraps/sandwiches, salad bar, soups, homemade desserts and snacks! The Coffee bar by the Library is open Monday - Friday and offers light snacks and gourmet coffee� The Calmar Campus Cougar Café offers daily lunch specials, open grill, salads, hot/cold beverages and snacks� Student punch cards are available for $20 with a value of $22 to use toward Calmar Cougar Cafe purchases�

How does parking work?In Calmar, you will need to register your car in the Bookstore and get a parking permit� The parking permit is free, but it is important to have if you want to avoid getting a parking ticket! There are designated student lots with plenty of spaces for you to park� In Peosta, you will not need a parking permit� There are four lots for you to park in and the lots are open to anyone�

How do I get a job on campus? The campuses offer a variety of opportunities for on-campus workstudy positions� Positions are paid minimum wage and typically have flexible hours to work around your course schedule� Find all available positions on >MyNICC>Student Records>Work Study Information� Direct questions regarding workstudy employment to the Financial Aid Office�

What’s the difference between credit and continuing education courses?Credit courses earn college credit toward completion of a degree, diploma or certificate� They can also be transferred to other educational institutions� Generally speaking, Continuing Education (CE) courses do not earn the student academic credit toward a degree� They are often offered for personal growth and/or professional development and may be as brief as a one-hour seminar or may be delivered over a longer period of time� CE courses are held at numerous locations across the NICC district and meet the needs of our business and industry partners as well as individuals in our communities�

Who has access to my academic record?No one, unless you give written consent� As a college student, your academic records are protected by a federal law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)� This law prohibits the college from disclosing non-directory information to someone other than you� If you would like to grant the college authority to share your academic or financial records with another individual, such as a parent or guardian, you must complete a Request to Release Information form in the Registrar’s Office� Students may refuse disclosure of directory information by filling out the appropriate form in the Registrar’s Office within ten calendar days of the beginning of the semester in which you are enrolled� The entire FERPA policy can be reviewed at www.nicc.edu/catalog

Didn’t do as well as you hoped on the ACCUPLACER test?Consider retesting to improve your score! It will save you time and money if you test into a higher course level� Make sure before you retest to take advantage of the opportunities in the Learning Center: study packets, review websites and test tutoring.Keepinmind,youwillhavetowaitatleasttwoweeksfromthedateoftheoriginaltestbeforere-testing.Todetermine if re-teting is beneficial, contact your advisor� To schedule a re-test, contact the Testing Center�

I completed a course at another college or university, what do I need to do?To receive transfer credit, request an official copy of your transcript from the college you previously attended be sent to the NICC Admissions Office� The Registrar will evaluate the transcript and determine which credits will satisfy NICC degree requirements�

I’m not sure this is the program for me.It’s not unusual to question the major you are in; after all, you want to be sure you invest in a career that is right for you! Do you offer student health insurance?Many of our students are covered under a family health plan� If you are not covered, we strongly encourage you to enroll in a student health insurance program in case of an illness or injury� Many of these are very low cost to the student for minimal coverage� The Financial Aid Office has brochures available for your review�

Who do I talk to about personal issues?NICC has free counseling services available for all students� Many students experience anxiety, stress and various personal issues as they transition to college life� Counselors can help you determine the seriousness of your problem, assist with coping strategies and, when needed, help you locate community mental health resources� Always seek counseling or other personal support at the first indication of a problem� Sometimes students drop out of college or withdraw from courses due to personal problems that could have been resolved with a little assistance� Remember, we are all here to help you succeed on your academic journey� Contact information for the Counseling staff can be found on pages 18-19�

I am an adult student. Do you have additional resources for me?The Adult Transition Center on the Calmar Campus, recognizes that learning is a lifetime process, and adults go through numerous transitions that may bring them back to college� We don’t think of it as going back, we think of it as moving forward� The Adult Transition Center serves adults considering starting or returning to college and nontraditional students currently attending NICC� Our services include workshops, career assessments, admission assistance, intake advising and course registration, career exploration and labor market information, assistance filing financial aid applications, scholarship assistance, informal counseling, referral to community resources and opportunities to connect with other nontraditional students and to connect with the campus community outside of classes� We can help you make a smooth transition, overcome barriers and reach goals� Contact the Calmar Campus Adult Transition Center at 800�728�2256, ext� 304� *The Calmar Campus has an adult student organization on campus called the Nontrad Network.

What is TRiO-SSS and how do I know if I qualify? TRiO-Student Support Services is a federally funded grant program that provides ongoing support for students at NICC who are looking to transfer to a four-year college or university� In order to qualify, you must be a first-generation college student, and/or are low-income, and/or have a disability� This program is only offered at the Peosta campus�

How can I balance school, family, work, etc.? It is easy to get overwhelmed as you begin your college career� It’s important to set attainable goals, set a schedule and involve the people closest to you in your college experience� Remember that you will need to study 2-3 hours for each hour you are in class, so a 40 hour work week may not work if you are also going to school full-time�

How do I get started with a research project?VisittheLibrary!TheLibrarystaffisavailabletohelpyouidentify,locate,andusetheresourcesofinformationlocatedboth inside and outside the Library� Because many of our library resources are electronic, you can access them 24/7 wherever you have a connection to the internet� If you are off campus and would like to access our databases for research materials, you will need to get the database passwords� >Academics>Libraries>Get Database Passwords� It is important to have the passwords, as the access to these databases is limited to NICC students, and the passwords change each term�
